John Morrison recently re-signed with WWE after over eight years. The news of his return, which was floated on the media in early December, was met positively by the WWE Universe which wants to see him back in the company.

As fans speculated which role Morrison would take once he returns and who he’ll partner with, WWE teased something interesting last night on SmackDown.

He emerged from The Miz’s locker room after his match with Kofi Kingston and informed Cathy Kelley that Miz won’t be taking any questions. This was a very interesting way for SmackDown to tease the return of the popular Superstar just weeks before the Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

In this article, we'll look at the 5 ways in which Morrison could return to the ring to become a top star once again.

#5 Against a local competitor

John Morrison is no stranger to WWE, and the fans are very well aware of the things the man has achieved in the ring during his career. The former Intercontinental Champion will be returning to action soon, and SmackDown will be looking to send him straight up the ranks to stand with some of its top Superstars.

While the brand will be looking to give Morrison some top competition soon, it won’t come as a surprise if they decide to pit him against some local competitors to start building his character and fanbase.

Morrison, just like Aleister Black on RAW, could gain a lot of momentum by scoring quick victories over some local competition to get the flow back again. It'll also allow many new fans to get used to Morrison, while he can develop his character during his matches and give fans a taste of what to expect from him.

While Black did an excellent job at building himself as a face coming in from NXT, Morrison could do something different and establish himself as a cunning heel against the competitors.

#4 At the Royal Rumble

The Royal Rumble could be a great place for him to make his return to the ring

One of the best places for Superstars to make their returns is at the Royal Rumble. We’ve seen numerous injured Superstars or stars who’ve signed or re-signed with the company make their appearance during a Royal Rumble match and give fans something to cheer about.

While it would have been nice to see John Morrison make his first appearance on television for WWE again at the Royal Rumble, it would have also been something that’d have been termed extremely predictable.

Keeping that in mind, it was interesting to watch him appear on SmackDown just weeks before the big pay-per-view. WWE could continue to tease Morrison on television in similar backstage segments or allow him to cause interferences in some matches without competing in the ring.

They could then allow him to appear in action for the first time at the Royal Rumble in the big 30-man match itself, and make a statement by eliminating some top Superstars. This would allow him to make an immediate impact and possibly set up his first rivalry on SmackDown, as Royal Rumble matches prove to be a great stage to tease future rivalries.

#3 Team up to take on Ali and Shorty G

John Morrison didn't make an ordinary appearance on SmackDown, as he appeared from the dressing room of The Miz to tell Cathy Kelley that The A-Lister was not taking questions. This was right after The Miz teased a heel turn and seemed to be getting back in his old role.

Keeping that in mind, it seems like Miz had called Morrison in to discuss his plans for both of them. That could result in them teaming up on SmackDown, and going after some of the babyface teams on the brand to make an impact.

Currently, Ali and Shorty G are the biggest babyfaces on the Blue brand who are usually working together as a team. Miz and Morrison could breathe life into their partnership once again by going after Ali and G to take them out and garner some heat.

This will allow Morrison to kickstart his WWE career again as a heel with the man with whom he’s shared the ring numerous times before. It will also allow both men to have a rivalry with two of the biggest babyfaces on the roster, which will earn them a lot of heat.

#2 Team up to take on The New Day

This week on SmackDown, The Miz appeared to wish the best of luck to Daniel Bryan in his battle against Bray Wyatt. However, when he met the ever-energetic New Day, he took out his frustration on the duo and knocked down their 2020 special pancakes.

This resulted in Miz fighting the ever-young babyface Kofi Kingston one on one. The Miz showed a renewed intensity in the clash, but a roll-up from Kingston ended the match in a loss for the A-lister.

This led to Miz showing his heel side once again, and it could result in him having a long feud with Kofi and Big E. With that in mind, The Miz may have called John Morrison to his dressing room in an attempt to even the odds and take the fight to the SmackDown Tag Team Champions.

Miz and Morrison have been extremely successful as a team in the past, and we could watch them return together again and get into the Championship picture right away. This could mark Morrison’s return to the ring for WWE, and also allow Miz to pick up some victories and a title on the way, as he hasn’t had the best victory record since mid-2019.

#1 Against The Miz

While it seemed like The Miz and John Morrison were in the room possibly discussing a plan to get back together and become the premier tag team on the Blue brand, there could have been another reason why Morrison answered the door.

It’s possible that Morrison wasn’t happy with how his longtime friend reacted to the New Day and how he tried to beat down Kofi Kingston after his loss and came in to talk some sense into The A-Lister.

If that’s the case, WWE could tease a partnership between Miz and Morrison for some weeks, but end up providing a swerve and letting the two go head to head, as Miz wouldn’t be interested in Morrison’s advice.

This could provide the perfect launching pad to Morrison, as Miz was in the Universal Championship picture not too long ago and is one of SmackDown’s top competitors. A rivalry against Miz will allow Morrison to shape up a great storyline for his return, and they could be seen in the ring against each other as early as the Royal Rumble.
