5 Little-known facts about WWE Clash of Champions 2019

Clash of Champions has already created some interesting facts

Clash of Champions takes place this weekend and interestingly, every WWE Championship on the main roster could actually be on the line on Sunday night. The concept of Night of Champions back in 2007 was that the show would see every title defended, which is now seemingly the concept for Clash of Champions as well.

Heading into the show, there are a few huge talking points since both Erick Rowan and Roman Reigns have a point to prove in the only non-title match, whilst Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman will be competing both together and against each other as they defend the Raw Tag Team Championships and then battle it out for the Universal Championship in the main event.

Clash of Champions has always been seen as just another gimmick pay-per-view from WWE, but this year's show has already developed some interesting facts before the company has even landed in Charlotte, North Carolina.

#5 Seth Rollins' history at the event

This weekend, Seth Rollins will be forced to defend two Championships as part of the third annual Clash of Champions event. Rollins and Braun Strowman will defend the Tag Team Championships against Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode before Rollins put his Universal Championship on the line against his own partner.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time that Rollins has pulled double duty at this event, even though Clash of Champions isn't considered to be under the same umbrella as Night of Champions, it's particularly well-known that Rollins was forced to pull double duty back in 2015.

The Architect won the United States Championship at SummerSlam in a winner takes all match with John Cena, before he was forced to defend the Championship against the former Champion the following month. Rollins also competed against Sting in the main event of the show, a match that turned out to be Sting's last.

#4 First-ever dual-brand WWE Clash of Champions

Clash of Champions in 2017 was a SmackDown Exclusive event
Clash of Champions in 2017 was a SmackDown Exclusive event

WWE was able to bring Clash of Champions over to their own brand back in 2016 and the show made its debut as a Raw Exclusive event in September that year and saw Seth Rollins attempt to dethrone Kevin Owens as the Universal Champion in the main event.

The following year, WWE switched Clash of Champions over to SmackDown Live and it became exclusive to the blue brand in 2017 as AJ Styles and Jinder Mahal main evented the show for the WWE Championship.

Last year there wasn't a Clash of Champions event since Super ShowDown in Australia, and Evolution that was WWE's first-ever an all-female pay-per-view were added to the schedule which meant that Hell in a Cell was the pay-per-view that took place in September, even though it usually takes place in October, the company decided to stream it a month early.

This means that next weekend's show is the first time that both brands have been able to take part in the show and all Championships which are currently defended on the main roster will be defended as part of the show.

#3 Chris Jericho wrestled on the final WCW Clash of Champions and the first WWE Clash of Champions

Chris Jericho is currently making a name for himself as the first-ever AEW World Champion, but there was a time when Y2J was at the forefront of WWE's programming after coming over from WCW.

Jericho is interestingly the only person in WWE history to have competed in the final WCW Clash of Champions pay-per-view as well as the first WWE event under the same name. Jericho competed back in 1997 as part of Clash of Champions XXXV in a match against Eddie Guerrero where he was able to pick up the win and retain the WCW Cruiserweight Championship in Nashville, Tennesse.

Almost two decades later when WWE acquired the rights for Clash of Champions, Jericho competed once again in a singles match against Sami Zayn in the only match that wasn't a gimmick match on the card that year.

Jericho picked up the win in both matches with his victory over Zayn coming after his famous codebreaker and adds this stat to quite an impressive list of accolades that Y2J was able to create throughout his time in WWE.

#2 WCW aired Clash of Champions VI Ragin' Cajun for free on the same day and time as Wrestlemania V

Clash of Champions was originally an event for WCW ahead of 2016 and it played a crucial part in the war between WCW and WWE. Back in 1989 as part of the 6th annual Clash of Champions event, WCW aired the event live on free TV as a way to hurt WWE's pay-per-view ratings since it was the same day and time as WrestleMania V.

The show included matches between the likes of Ricky Steamboat and Ric Flair, Sting and Rip Morgan as well as the main event between Lex Luger and Jack Victory which helped to draw a crowd of 5,300 as well as a 4.3 rating on TBS.

WrestleMania V, by comparison, managed to draw a live crowd of 18,946 since the likes of Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Andre The Giant, Jake "The Snake Roberts" and The Hart Foundation were all part of the show.

It's well-known that WWE ended up buying out WCW and winning the Monday Night Wars, but more than two decades later, it appears that The Wednesday Night Wars could be looming.

#1 Charlotte is undefeated at Clash of Champions

Charlotte Flair has an interesting history at Clash of Champions

Charlotte Flair is a nine-time Women's Champion who is looking for her 10th Championship this weekend at Clash of Champions when she battles Bayley for the SmackDown Women's Championship.

Charlotte definitely has all the odds in her favor this weekend, since the show takes place in her hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. The former Women's Champion also has a fantastic record at Clash of Champions since she is the only star to compete as part of all three shows over the past four years.

Back in 2016, Charlotte was able to successfully defend her Raw Women's Championship in a triple threat match against Sasha Banks and Bayley, before she took on Natalya at the SmackDown exclusive version of the event in 2017.

Charlotte walked in as SmackDown Women's Champion and was able to defeat Natalya using the Figure 8 in their lumberjack match.

This weekend will be the first time Charlotte has walked into the event without a Championship, but given the fact that she is now a face and in her hometown, it's likely that The Queen could be walking out with The SmackDown Women's Championship on Sunday night.
