5 Crucial mistakes WWE has made with The Fiend

Bray Wyatt is perhaps one of the most creative minds in WWE at present and has been able to create a whole new persona for himself after years of being underutilized in WWE.

Whilst Wyatt was able to become WWE Champion during his first stint with WWE before he unveiled The Fiend back in 2019, as a former two-time Universal Champion just a year into his new character, it could be argued that The Fiend has been the more successful of the two gimmicks for the former Wyatt Family leader.

Whilst The Fiend has become very popular with the WWE Universe, it doesn't mean that his current run hasn't been littered with mistakes. There are several big moments from The Fiend's last year that have been questionable, to say the least.

#5. WWE Mistake: The Fiend vs Roman Reigns?

Roman Reigns returned to WWE at SummerSlam earlier this year and was able to quickly take back the Universal Championship. This meant that The Fiend was only able to hold the title for a week before it was taken away and Reigns then moved on to new opposition.

The WWE Draft meant that The Fiend was then moved over to Monday Night RAW along with Alexa Bliss, but the week before WWE dropped a tease that saw Bliss hinting that The Fiend was looking to go back after Reigns.

It was later revealed that this was the plan, but The Fiend was then drafted to the opposite brand. The WWE Universe wanted the match to happen but at present, there are currently no future plans for the two men to collide. The Fiend is in a feud with Randy Orton whilst Roman Reigns is busy with Kevin Owens.

Of course, there is nothing stopping The Fiend from going after Reigns anyway, but at present, he appears to be following the rules.

#4. WWE Mistake: The Fiend vs Kevin Owens

The Fiend made his WWE in-ring debut back at SummerSlam in 2019 and over the past year and a half, every superstar that has crossed his path has ended up changing in some way.

Daniel Bryan, Finn Balor, Seth Rollins, Alexa Bliss even Roman Reigns when he returned at SummerSlam this year. The only man who doesn't seem to have been affected by The Fiend is Kevin Owens.

Owens faced Bray Wyatt's alter-ego back in October after pointing out several issues with the star and then being attacked on the KO Show. The match was The Fiend's first on SmackDown and once again it was the masked star who came out on top.

Owens has seemingly been the exact same character throughout his entire WWE career, he's still The Prizefighter that he debuted as on the main roster in 2015 and even a brush with The Fiend hasn't changed him.

This weekend he battles Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship in the same way that he has challenged for Championships his entire career. Which begs the question, why didn't The Fiend change Kevin Owens?

#3. WWE Mistake: That red light

Following The Fiend's WWE in-ring debut back at SummerSlam last year, it appeared that something was missing. WWE then decided that the character needed to be so unique that when he wrestled he would have his own lighting effect.

So for the next few months, The Fiend would have a red light for all of his matches and he was undefeated whenever he was under that light. Interestingly, fans believed that it was the light that held his power before it was then taken away.

At The Royal Rumble earlier this year, the company took away the red light and it appeared that this wasn't his strength after all, since he was still able to come out on top against The Miz following an intense feud.

There were a lot of WWE fans who didn't enjoy the red light and argued on social media that it was affecting the way that they watched the match. This could be the main reason why WWE decided that the light should go and The Fiend has since been able to wrestle without.

If The Fiend never needed the light and it was never a main part of his power, then why did WWE add it, and then why remove it without any kind of explanation?

#2. WWE Mistake: Hell in a Cell 2019

Hell in a Cell 2019 was a solid pay-per-view from WWE until it reached the main event. Whilst there are several fans who still act as though this never happened, there are others who question what WWE was actually trying to do with The Fiend character.

The obvious answer here is that WWE had booked themselves into a corner. Seth Rollins had become a huge star at that time and stepping inside Hell in a Cell with The Fiend meant that he would probably have to lose the Universal Championship.

Rollins didn't lose the title. Instead, the match ended when the referee called for the bell because The Fiend was no longer defending himself, since Rollins went on to use a sledgehammer on his opponent. Whilst it is something that is seen in wrestling very often and a way to ensure real injuries didn't happen, many fans felt as though they were short-changed.

The Fiend later went on to defeat Rollins in Saudi Arabia to win the title, which he could have easily done at Hell in a Cell before a rematch was then booked in The Middle East. So why did WWE need to create controversy over their own match?

#1. WWE Mistake: The Fiend vs Goldberg

Goldberg had already made quite the impression in Saudi Arabia following his match against The Undertaker, but the former WCW legend made the decision to return to The Middle East to battle the undefeated Fiend at Super ShowDown back in February.

It was thought that this match would be a walk in the park for The Fiend, but instead, it turned into one of the biggest mistakes of the star's career. It was another short match from Goldberg that saw him walk out with WWE's biggest prize.

Not only that but it meant that a part-time superstar was the only man in WWE who had been able to defeat The Fiend. WWE ensured that Seth Rollins didn't defeat Bray Wyatt's alter-ego a few months earlier, just to hand him over to Goldberg who then wrestled one more match at WrestleMania before walking away once again.

It's unknown why Goldberg is still the only man to defeat The Fiend and what this means to his character. It's just disappointing that with all the talent on WWE's roster and everyone that could have used that push, it was Goldberg that was chosen.
