5 New WWE records after Clash of Champions 2016

Sadly, ‘weirdest looking spot’ is not a world record

WWE Clash of Champions came to us last night from Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. After what was a disappointing Summerslam, we were expecting this PPV to be a dampener as well. But as it turns out, this was a solid event with some good wrestling and decent storyline progression as well.

Not only was this a clash of champions, but a night of records. Let’s go on straight to them, then. Here are 5 new records after WWE Clash of Champions.

5: The longest reigning Universal Championship reign

Kevin Owens proudly defended the ugliest looking championship belt of all time

This is often treated as a joke on Raw. But truth be told, it is a fact indeed. Kevin Owens truly is the longest reigning Universal Champion in the history of the company. His title reign began the week after Finn Balor was forced to relinquish the Universal Championship, the night after Balor won it, because of a shoulder injury. But ever since then, Owens has had 2 successful title defences (with a bit of help from his friends) against the Architect and the Big Dog.

Much like the face associated with the ‘Undisputed Championship’ is Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens is the face of the WWE Universal Championship. At 29 days, he is the record holder who defended his record at a modern day classic at the inaugural Clash of Champions. Which incidentally brings us to our next record in this countdown. Read on....

4: The first ever Clash of Champions PPV

We believe this move also counts as a ‘first time ever’ spot

Historically, WCW used to do free television specials called ‘Clash of the Champions’. As legend has it, with Wrestlemania 4 right around the corner, Jim Crockett paired Ric Flair against Sting, and they put on a classic that made Sting an absolute superstar. They went toe to toe with Wrestlemania, and that achievement remains one of the biggest feats in wrestling from that era. Through the duration of WCW, there were more ‘Clash of the Champions’ specials, and after the company’s demise, WWE replaced their Vengeance pay-per-view with ‘Night of Champions’. The idea was simple.

Every single title in the company would be defended that night. Clash of Champions, a first-time event employs the same philosophy. This was the first ever Raw only pay-per-view of the new era, and we hope there are several more successful editions in the future.

3: The continuation of Charlotte’s undefeated streak

Charlotte has been slapping at her competition since her main roster debut

When we talk about ‘The Streak’ in wrestling, we invariably think of The Undertaker. Or maybe, Goldberg’s 173-0 record. Nobody realises that Charlotte too has been maintaining a streak that no other female competitor in WWE history can claim. She is undefeated at 13-0 in WWE pay-per-views since her debut (not counting tag team matches). In fact, in 2016 alone she has a 10-1 record in Pay-per-views, a record that no other competitor holds...either male or female.

While we talk about the Four Horsemen as the most dominant female bunch in wrestling, Charlotte has been the clear favourite from the word go. She is durable, does not get hurt, is great on the mic and of course, has the best family legacy. We keep complaining about 50-50 booking in the main roster all the time, but we believe that WWE sees more in Charlotte than they let on. Otherwise, Sasha Banks would have taken the title a long time back. No greater proof of this than her 309 day title reign of course.

2: The other record that Charlotte holds

Aside from slapping, Charlotte also stomps out her competition

Charlotte makes it to this list, not once but twice. We all know about her undefeated streak at pay-per-views. But did you know that she has also appeared in 15 straight pay per views, one after the other and is the only woman in history to do so, in fact, some may say that it also makes her the greatest female WWE athlete of all time.

There’s never been a PPV since she debuted, where she was asked to sit out. Woo!

1: The New Day are still the longest reigning Tag Team Champions in WWE History

Who's number 1 in this list? Who? Who? Who? Who? Who?

From ‘wooo’ we move to ‘who?’. Who else but the New Day! At Extreme Rules, they surpassed Paul London and Brian Kendrick’s record as longest reigning tag team champions in WWE history. Of course, if you include the WWF as well, they still have a fair amount of time to go, before they can beat Demolition’s record.

But the way that they’re being booked, it looks like they’ll be the ones to demolish Demolition.
