5 reasons why Cain Velasquez should not eliminate Brock Lesnar from Royal Rumble 2020

Cain Velasquez entered the WWE to help out Rey Mysterio in his battle against The Beast Brock Lesnar. The two men got into a match for the WWE Championship at Crown Jewel 2019, but Velasquez came up short.

Since then, we haven’t seen the former UFC Heavyweight Champion compete again as he seems to be battling a knee injury.

Velasquez recently revealed to The Sun that he will be taking part in the 30-man Royal Rumble match to be held at the namesake PPV later this month. This was a big revelation as his participation wasn’t confirmed to the fans earlier and he could have entered as a surprise participant.

The news comes after WWE Champion Brock Lesnar confirmed his entry into the Royal Rumble match. It seems as though the man who will eliminate Lesnar from the match will go on to have a feud with him for the WWE Championship even if the same Superstar does not win the battle royal.

While Velasquez has the potential to eliminate The Beast from the match, we will look at 5 reasons why he shouldn’t be the Superstar who does so.

#5 It’ll be too predictable

Have we seen this before?
Have we seen this before?

Cain Velasquez first emerged onto the scene as Dominic’s Godfather who wanted to exact revenge from Brock Lesnar for beating down his friend Rey Mysterio and his son.

Up until Crown Jewel 2019, fans were pretty sure that the man who defeated Lesnar in UFC would also defeat him in WWE and take his title away.

Even though the match seemed to begin as expected, the company pulled off a swerve and allowed Lesnar to defeat Velasquez in a matter of minutes via submission.

This was a great way for the company to do the unthinkable, even though fans flooded social media with negative sentiments regarding the clash. Later, we came to know the reasons why Velasquez was booked to lose so quickly to Lesnar.

Now that the former UFC Heavyweight Champion will be entering the Royal Rumble match, many fans will believe that he will be the one to eliminate The Beast, thus earning himself a WWE Championship shot at WrestleMania 36.

However, that booking will be too predictable as fans were hoping to see Velasquez defeat Lesnar in his first match (which did not happen), and allowing him to eliminate Lesnar from the Rumble will leave a bad taste in the mouth.

#4 He’s already had his shot

Velasquez tapped out to Lesnar at Crown Jewel

One of the biggest matches we got last year was between Brock Lesnar and the debuting Cain Velasquez at Crown Jewel 2019.

Both the men have a rich past that helped the company build towards the match and the fans were excited as to how the two will match out inside a WWE ring.

While there were a lot of hopes attached to the man who defeated Lesnar inside the octagon, he did not fare well inside the squared circle. This disappointed a lot of fans who were hoping to see Velasquez dismantle Lesnar and take home the WWE Championship.

The match built on the storyline between Lesnar and Rey Mysterio, but hurt Velasquez's image and chances in WWE a great deal.

Keeping in mind that Velasquez’s first match in the company was against The Beast for the WWE Championship, the company shouldn’t allow him to make his second entry into a match about the same man and title again.

This would not only hurt the image of the title, but also the other Superstars who’ll be competing in the ring not only to win the Rumble but also to eliminate Lesnar.

#3 Fans are expecting something better

We don't want it to end in a similar way
We don't want it to end in a similar way

Since Crown Jewel 2019, wherein Cain Velasquez tapped out to Brock Lesnar in just over two minutes, WWE has built some solid Superstars who are doing well.

We’ve watched Lesnar jump from SmackDown to RAW since then to hunt down Rey Mysterio, and then make the brand his home again. The Red brand has some strong Superstars on its roster waiting to get a shot.

Unlike Velasquez, who still needs a lot of grooming in the ring, the fans are looking for someone who has already put in the hard work and needs to get a solid match against The Beast.

Last year, we watched Finn Balor and Seth Rollins give Lesnar some of the best matches of his current tenure and reminded fans that Lesnar is much more than just squash matches when booked right.

With that in mind, the WWE Universe deserves to get better matches out of the WWE Champion, who has lived on squash victories for most of his career.

Several Superstars need to go toe-to-toe with him and give him a run for his money even if they end up losing. And to make this happen, WWE needs to give the men who they've built up a chance rather than someone who they’ve picked from outside the industry.

#2 He needs time to build his character

He needs to build a character which fans can follow
He needs to build a character which fans can follow

Unlike MMA and a lot of other combat sports, pro wrestling is a lot more about the entertainment than just the battle inside the ring.

This requires every Superstar in the company to build a character before getting started so that the fans can get behind them better and know what they are representing.

Currently, ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt, Becky Lynch, Aleister Black, and Adam Cole have some of the strongest characters, which have allowed the fans to either get behind them or go against them.

With that in mind, Cain Velasquez’s introduction in WWE was a bit haphazard as he was quickly injected into the scene to help out Rey Mysterio beatdown Brock Lesnar.

He only appeared for one match and then disappeared from the scene due to an injury that did not allow him much character development unlike someone like Tyson Fury, who emerged at a similar time and managed to go way over with the crowd with his character.

Therefore, it seems like WWE needs to give Velasquez some time in the ring to develop a character for the WWE Universe as not all fans are familiar with him. Unlike Ronda Rousey, who had appeared a few times before her WWE debut and had some top moments, the former UFC Heavyweight Champion will need to make a smoother transition from UFC to WWE before getting another top title shot.

#1 Many other Superstars deserve a chance

It's time for The Scottish Psychopath to rise
It's time for The Scottish Psychopath to rise

There is no questioning the fact that several top Superstars on RAW and SmackDown have had a good 2019 but have been starved of top Championship matches, which hasn’t worked well with the fans.

Superstars such as Drew McIntyre, Rusev, Bobby Lashley, Aleister Black, and even Roman Reigns have all been gaining a lot of momentum but haven’t reached the top just yet.

With that in mind, fast-tracking Cain Velasquez into the WWE Championship scene once again will not only dishearten a lot of Superstars but also a lot of WWE fans.

Since the Rumble will most likely give us the WrestleMania 36 challengers for both the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship, the company needs to focus on men who are already building their case over the past few months.

It seems like anyone who manages to eliminate Lesnar will automatically get in a rivalry with The Beast, and Drew McIntyre seems to have the most momentum and is a crowd-favorite at the moment.

Just like last year, WWE needs to focus on giving fans what they want to and build top stars and increase their ratings, and that is exactly what happened in the case of Becky Lynch, Seth Rollins, Kofi Kingston, and a few others.
