The 24/7 Championship has been a breath of fresh air in the serious storylines that usually engulf the entire WWE Network. At a time when Brock Lesnar is looking to take over SmackDown’s throne, and The Fiend is attacking every Superstar that crosses his path on RAW, the 24/7 Championship drama has shown the lighter side of the creatives of RAW and SmackDown.
This week on RAW, Carmella surprised everyone by tricking R-Truth and pinning him to become the new 24/7 Champion. While we expected Truth to be unhappy with her actions, it was a pleasant surprise to see him appreciate what Carmella pulled off and helped her get away from the women who tried to pin the new Champion.
With Carmella currently holding the Championship which has seen the shortest reigns take place, we take a look at the five reasons why she won the 24/7 Championship from R-Truth.
#1 The big pop proved that the fans wanted it to happen
For months, fans have been waiting for the moment Carmella will turn on R-Truth and pin him for the 24/7 Championship. Even though time was ticking away as new contenders for the Championship kept emerging, the threat was always looming over Truth's head.
After Carmella provided the distraction herself and then pinned Truth for the title this week, the pop from the crowd proved that the fans wanted to see exactly what they got, and it came at a point when no one expected it.
What made things even better was the fact that she didn’t turn on Truth, and we can expect their partnership to continue even longer which is exactly what WWE needs at this point.
Sports entertainment has always been about giving fans what they want, and it seems like this is exactly what the fans wanted from the 24/7 Championship storyline. Carmella could prove to be the right change that the title needs.
#2 To ensure the story doesn’t get stale
The 24/7 Championship has been as much about R-Truth as he has been about the title. It seems like the title and the Superstar have such a great bond that they have become synonymous with each other.
Carmella, on the other hand, has provided great support to Truth throughout his reigns and quest for the 24/7 Championship, helping him win the title on many occasions.
Since the two are a great team and almost seem inseparable at the moment, it was a good decision to switch the Superstars without taking them out of the 24/7 Championship storyline.
The title’s storyline is now heavily connected with both Truth and Carmella, and with a new Champion, WWE can ensure that the Championship’s storyline won’t get stale anytime soon even with the same faces existing in the storyline.
#3 Adds a new dimension to the challenge
The main purpose of the 24/7 Championship seemed to be a chance for the undercard and overlooked Superstars to remain in the eyes of the WWE Universe.
Since inception, we’ve seen many talented Superstars such as Eric Young, EC3, and Jinder Mahal trying to get their hands on the title at a time when they’re largely being overlooked for televised bookings.
Carmella’s win could provide just that for the female locker room which too is filled with Superstars who have no real storyline or direction to head into.
Sarah Logan, Dana Brooke, Tamina, and The IIconics are a few of the many talented female Superstars who don’t have any storylines at the moment and could benefit from getting some television time through the 24/7 Championship drama.
Even though Carmella is the fifth female to have won the 24/7 Championship, she is the only winner who is an active in-ring competitor in the WWE.
#4 Reverses their roles
Since their partnership materialized, R-Truth and Carmella have given us some of the most comic and memorable moments of the year.
From Dance Breaks to taking over commentary duties during pay-per-views, the two Superstars have been phenomenal at what they do. Keeping that in mind, WWE has kept the new title around R-Truth’s waist for most of its existence, and the veteran has won the 24/7 Championship no less than 19 times to date.
Throughout his reign, Carmella has proved to be the perfect associate who has helped hide and cover up the Champion while other Superstars have been on the prowl.
Now that Carmella is holding the title, WWE could reverse the roles and allow Truth to show his covering skills by hiding Carmella for the female roster and protecting her and the Championship around her waist.
Truth has been one of the most humorous and innovative Superstars in WWE, and he could do the job really well while keeping the same two faces in the 24/7 Championship picture.
#5 Gives her more credibility ahead of the tag team match on SmackDown
Last week on SmackDown, Carmella surprised everyone by coming to Charlotte Flair’s rescue during a two-on-one beat down at the hands of Bayley and Sasha Banks. While Charlotte is already engaged in a feud with Bayley for the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship, Carmella’s inclusion into the mix is quite interesting.
This Tuesday on SmackDown Live, Charlotte will team up with Carmella to take on the team of Bayley and Banks. This match could be the top match of the night with a lot in store for the fans.
If Carmella walks into the match as the 24/7 Champion, her value will automatically be more in the match than if she did not have a strap around her waist.
At a time when we believed that WWE added Carmella as the weak link in the storyline for Bayley or Sasha to pin, her value as a Champion will make the match much more entertaining and exciting.
