5 Reasons why Drake Maverick became the new WWE 24/7 Champion on SmackDown Live

On this week's edition of WWE SmackDown Live, Drake Maverick's quest to become a five-time WWE 24/7 Champion finally came to an end.

During the show, the then-Champion Elias appeared to brag about defeating Kevin Owens in the King of the Ring tournament last week, though his words didn’t go unpunished.

Elias’ scathing comments quickly drew the ire of Owens himself, who laid the singer out with a stunner, but didn’t go for the pin.

Though Owens didn’t attempt to win the 24/7 title, this did give plenty of opportunity for others. While R-Truth attempted to win the title back, it was Maverick who escaped SmackDown as the new 24/7 Champion.

Here are five reasons why WWE made Drake Maverick the new 24/7 Champion on this week's SmackDown Live.

#5 Because R-Truth is going to tie Ric Flair's record

Truth is already a 13-time WWE 24/7 Champion.
Truth is already a 13-time WWE 24/7 Champion.

There is arguably no Superstar more decorated in Championship gold than the Nature Boy Ric Flair.

The first-ever two-time WWE Hall of Famer, Flair is also a Royal Rumble winner, WWE Triple Crown Champion and is best known for his 16 reigns as World Champion over the many decades of his illustrious career.

Though he has only held the title for a combined 55 days, R-Truth is already a 13-time WWE 24/7 Champion, and could be closing in on Flair's record.

Of course, being a 16-time World Champion means being a 16-time title loser, which may explain why Truth lost the gold this week.

If this plan goes off, there's no telling what Truth could do, seeing himself as the Ric Flair of this generation, though we feel that would bring the ire of the Queen, Ric's daughter, Charlotte Flair.

#4 Because he's the funniest thing in WWE today

Comedy in WWE can be a difficult thing. Too often, WWE has tried to make the fans laugh, only to be met by cringed faces and groans by the fans.

That's not to say that the WWE never gets it right when it comes to comedy, as there have been some instances of genuine gold, such as the Daniel Bryan and Kane skits of 2012.

In 2019, there is arguably no-one funnier than Drake Maverick, as it's clear that the former Rockstar Spud has no problem being the butt of the joke.

Whether it be dressing as 'Macho Man-nana' (a crossover between Randy Savage and a banana) at San Diego Comic-Con, or even getting pinned at his own wedding, Maverick has got a good sense of humor.

Since its unveiling, the 24/7 Title has been one of the most exciting parts of WWE TV, but also one of the funniest, allowing some much-needed comic relief between matches.

With that in mind, having Maverick be the champion, at least for now, makes total sense.

#3 Because he's going to lose his job as 205 Live General Manager

Maverick could find himself the victim of those two words by Mr. McMahon.
Maverick could find himself the victim of those two words by Mr. McMahon.

In January 2018, Drake Maverick made a shocking debut in the WWE, being revealed as the General Manager of 205 Live by then-SmackDown Live General Manager, Daniel Bryan.

In the time since his arrival in the WWE, Maverick has tried his very best to make the Purple brand must-see TV, and has often been successful.

Since the 24/7 title was unveiled earlier this year though, Maverick's focus has clearly changed.

Nowadays, it seems the only thing the British Superstar can think about is capturing the title, and now that he holds the gold again, the only thing he can think about is keeping it.

This could all lead to Maverick losing his job as the 205 Live GM, as the McMahons could cite his obsession with the green title negatively affecting the brand he is supposed to be in charge of.

Maverick being removed from his role as the 205 Live GM would obviously be a devastating blow for the champ, but could have a silver lining to it, as my next point will explain...

#2 Because he's going to become a full-time wrestler

Spud wrestled regularly in Impact Wrestling but hasn't since he joined WWE.

Long-time fans of Drake Maverick will know that the British Superstar had quite a career before joining WWE last year.

Maverick is probably best known for his career in Impact Wrestling as Rockstar Spud, where he served primarily in a managerial role for NXT's EC3, before becoming a fully-fledged wrestling member on the roster.

Even before Impact, Maverick wrestled on the indies and is quite a solid hand in the ring.

This win could be just the start of Maverick's transitioning into a bigger role as a wrestler in WWE, as though he had matches, he has spent the majority of the past two years as the General Manager of 205 Live, or as the manager of the Authors of Pain.

Having Maverick with the title could help both the WWE and the British Superstar reveal just how talented he is as a wrestler.

This could all lead to Maverick becoming a more regular competitor on RAW and SmackDown Live and who knows? Maybe Maverick could be adding some other titles to his collection in the years to come.

#1 Because he's finally going to consummate his marriage

Maverick is finally the champion again and may be able to consummate his marriage with his wife.
Maverick is finally the champion again and may be able to consummate his marriage with his wife.

Drake Maverick's path to the 24/7 Championship hasn't exactly been easy.

After winning the title many months back, Maverick would lose the title to R-Truth at his wedding to Renee Michelle, who made the edict that Maverick couldn't consummate their marriage until he once again held the gold.

This rule has led to plenty of hilarity by Maverick both on TV and on social media, as the British Superstar has shown his frustration about not being able to do the deed without the title.

Whilst this storyline has been fun, it's true that all good things must come to an end, and that includes this storyline.

If this idea of Maverick being unable to consummate his marriage went any longer, there is a good chance fans could get bored of it.

But now, Maverick has the title around his waist, his wife by his side and is ready to finally get what he wants, as well as move on from this storyline to what hilarious hijinks the company has planned next for the British Superstar.
