5 reasons why John Morrison is returning to WWE after 8 years

He's back!
He's back!

The Guru of Greatness, the Shaman of Sexy and the multi-time Intercontinental Champion John Morrison is officially back with the WWE. He signed a new contract recently and it was reported by Ryan Satin on WWE Backstage.

It was always a matter of when and not if Morrison would return. While we would undoubtedly have loved to see a surprise return, we suppose that there may not have been a storyline in place for him or the purpose of WWE Backstage was for announcements like this.

Either way, it's a huge signing for WWE and at 40-years old, Morrison looks as evergreen as ever. He spent many years away from the company and in that time, grew as a performer and became a World Champion in multiple other promotions. It's clear that his value grew outside of the company and he even began dabbling around in Hollywood as a stuntman as well.

Here are a few theories as to why Morrison returned to WWE.

#5. Wants to end his WWE run on his terms

Will he be able to do it his way?
Will he be able to do it his way?

Morrison left WWE in a bit of a frustrating position. He had to deal with various injuries and knew that under WWE's rigorous schedule, he wouldn't be able to do that. He took time to heal and declined a 3-year contract that was offered to him.

The reality is that while he had a good run with the company, there was still a bit left to be desired. Morrison knows that he couldn't end it the way he wanted to and any Superstar would prefer to leave.

While he did leave on his terms and got to do what he wanted, there's always a gut feeling in a performer to want to end things on their terms as well.

#4. He'll probably have better creative control and a relatively better schedule

It's going to be interesting to see what John Morrison's role in WWE will be. He would probably want a contract like Matt Hardy's as the legend had been away for the longest time and seemed to have quite a bit of time to himself and away from the ring.

When Morrison left, it was because he wanted more control of his time and to be away from the rigorous WWE schedule. As we know, the schedule is a grueling one for a full-time performer and it's hard to be on the road most of the time.

However, there's one of two possibilities here. Either he decided to put away his other career aside for the time being, or one of the main clauses of his contract stated that he has a more relaxed schedule that will allow him to pursue outside ventures as well. We think it's the latter and that's one of the reasons he signed with WWE.

#3. WWE offered him more money than AEW

One of the best parts about wrestling in 2019 is that talent has so many different options to choose from as a place of work. AEW and WWE are the two biggest options right now and it's no secret that WWE is trying hard to lock down almost all their current superstars to new deals.

While Morrison isn't someone who Cody Rhodes' promotion desperately needed, he would have undoubtedly been a good addition to their roster. He's a veteran of the business and puts on great matches that meet AEW's quality and standards. It's possible that he was approached by AEW for a contract and used that as leverage when WWE offered him a deal.

He denied ever being offered a deal in the first place but if he was able to use AEW's offer to get a better and bigger money deal from WWE, then good for him. Ultimately, it's a job and it boils down to how much money is offered. Morrison simply went for the option that paid him more.

#2. Everyone returns to WWE at some point

There's a saying that's gone around a lot and it's that in WWE, "never say never". It's repeated because it's true and the fact of the matter is that you can never deny the possibilities of big returns, which is why CM Punk slowly having an association with WWE again (even as a FOX employee) wasn't a big surprise to many.

In this case, it's not a surprise either. For those who weren't in the loop about Morrison potentially returning, it probably was, but it's been an open secret for a while, even if he denied it publicly himself (and what else would he be expected to do?).

We wonder why the deal took so long to come to fruition but it's possible that Morrison was nursing injuries, busy with his other career or was simply waiting it out to work out a better deal with the company.

But his return confirms the fact that almost everyone returns to WWE at some point or the other.

#1. To try and win a World Championship in the one place he never has

John Morrison is a former Impact Wrestling World Champion

John Morrison has been a World Champion in three different promotions - Impact Wrestling, AAA, and Lucha Underground. He's officially a 3-time World Champion outside of WWE and he knows that virtually everywhere he goes, he's almost guaranteed a World Championship push.

In WWE, however, that's not the case. He has never been a World Champion there and during his last run, his ceiling was the Intercontinental Championship, which he won on three separate occasions. Morrison still wrestles at the highest level and knows that trying to become a World Champion in WWE would be a huge challenge, one that many wouldn't count on him to succeed.

In that sense, Morrison may want a lot more out of this run than to be the veteran that puts younger talent over. If he does well, he could be like Rey Mysterio - returning after years and coming back as an even more polished in-ring performer.
