5 reasons why WWE has booked Brock Lesnar vs. Rey Mysterio at Survivor Series 2019 for the WWE Championship

It’s not often that a Superstar quits one brand to move to another in the hunt for a single opponent. Well, that’s exactly what Brock Lesnar did on Friday Night SmackDown, the place where he defeated Kofi Kingston to win the WWE Championship only a month ago.

Lesnar moved from SmackDown to RAW and appeared on this week’s broadcast hunting for Rey Mysterio, the man who tried to embarrass him at Crown Jewel by attacking him after his match against Cain Velasquez.

Mysterio’s heroics infuriated Lesnar, who tried to harm everyone who stood in his way as he tried to find Mysterio, who emerged to attack Lesnar once again on RAW this week.

Afterward, The Ultimate Underdog challenged The Beast Incarnate to a WWE Championship Match at Survivor Series. While Survivor Series is famous for its traditional cross-brand matches, Lesnar will be defending his Championship at the event rather than facing the Universal Champion and/or the NXT Champion at the event in a battle for supremacy.

In this article, we will look at the five reasons why WWE has booked Lesnar to take on Mysterio for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series.

#5 To bring the legend to the top again

Rey Mysterio hasn't had the same level of success since his return to the company
Rey Mysterio hasn't had the same level of success since his return to the company

First things first, Rey Mysterio is arguably the top legendary role model we have in the WWE today. He has remained a babyface for almost the entire time we’ve seen him on screen and has given fans some great memories by being the underdog and still going over against all odds.

Since his return to the company last year, we’ve seen him largely perform on the mid-card and even come to the brink of retirement after a series of loses handed to him by Andrade.

His only moment to shine came when he earned a chance to challenge Seth Rollins for the Universal Championship, but he and his son Dominick were attacked by Brock Lesnar at the beginning of the night which blew off his only top chance since his return.

Since Lesnar cost him a big opportunity, it makes sense that Mysterio wants to take the WWE Championship away from him and make it his own.

We’ve seen Mysterio go as far as to win the WWE Heavyweight Championship, and this could prove to be another ticket to the top for the cruiserweight who has never backed down from a challenge.

#4 To protect Brock Lesnar, The Fiend, and Adam Cole

Picking a winner would have given the creatives a big headache
Picking a winner would have given the creatives a big headache

One of the major reasons why the company may have gone against the Survivor Series tradition is because of the complicated booking a match between the top three Champions of the company might bring.

We will witness the three top female Champions, namely Becky Lynch, Bayley, and Shayna Baszler compete at Survivor Series, but picking a winner between them is tough already.

When it comes to men, things get even more complicated as the company has built all three men as the absolute best in the business.

Brock Lesnar is a man who has only been defeated by a handful of men and keeps getting more and more dominant with each outing. ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt is new to the mix but has proven to be the most lethal force in WWE through his recent antics. Adam Cole has been one of the best athletes in the company, and recently defeated former WWE Champion Daniel Bryan and came close to defeating former Universal Champion Seth Rollins.

Therefore, picking a clear winner from these three men would have been tough and would have left many fans unhappy in the process.

Instead, putting the WWE Championship on the line against a man who has already got a storyline building with Lesnar makes more sense, and frees up Adam Cole to either captain Team NXT or get into another match for the event.

#3 To give fans their favorite babyface to side with

Mysterio could give Lesnar a fight like Balor did

One of the best things that WWE plays at is making clear babyfaces and putting them against challenges that make things seem impossible. This is a story Rey Mysterio has gone through numerous times and battled men such as Batista, Big Show, and Kane, only to come out victorious, much to the excitement of the fans.

Building a babyface storyline is something that WWE creatives do best, and therefore it’s a foolproof method that the company employs whenever The Beast comes out to play.

One of the best matches Lesnar this year was against one of the smallest men that existed on the main roster, Finn Balor. The two met inside the ring at Royal Rumble, and Balor gave Lesnar a fight for almost 9 minutes before Lesnar got desperate and brought out the Kimura Lock for the victory.

Similarly, we could watch The Master of the 619 take Lesnar to the brink like no other heavyweight has before, and make him get desperate before pulling the trigger.

Such a storyline would help Mysterio stay on top while giving Lesnar a run for his money and bringing praise to the company just like the Brock Lesnar vs. Finn Balor clash did.

#2 To do what Cain Velasquez couldn’t do

Lesnar picked up the victory in just 88 seconds

At Crown Jewel, Cain Velasquez took on Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship in Saudi Arabia. Many fans were hoping that Velasquez would give Lesnar a good beating, however, things did not work out the way they would’ve liked.

Velasquez was first introduced to the WWE Universe when he walked in during the Season Premiere of SmackDown to avenge the beating Lesnar handed to Rey Mysterio and his son. However, he was unable to finish the job at Crown Jewel as he was unable to punish Lesnar and take his Championship away from him.

This prompted Mysterio to dig down deep and come out to attack Lesnar himself as a father whose son has suffered at the hands of The Beast multiple times.

We’ve already seen Mysterio and Lesnar lock horns in WWE before, and with much more experience under his belt, Mysterio may be able to outsmart The Beast, unlike Velasquez.

Mysterio is the right man to take this storyline forward as he will work well to elongate the storyline and possibly give fans a great moment to remember if he beats Brock Lesnar and takes his Championship away from him.

#1 To give a KofiMania-esque moment

Another great Mysterio moment to look back on?
Another great Mysterio moment to look back on?

KofiMania was arguably the most emotional moment that the WWE Universe got this year, as Kofi Kingston fulfilled his lifelong dream of not only getting a singles’ shot at the WWE Championship but also winning it at WrestleMania by defeating Daniel Bryan.

Kofi Kingston’s fairytale run lasted almost six months before Brock Lesnar spoilt the mood and the party and defeated him in under ten seconds to become the WWE Champion.

Picking up from that, the company could give its fans another story of the underdog who seems to be nowhere near the top of the company at the moment but could climb the mountain to achieve the impossible.

We’ve seen Mysterio be The Ultimate Underdog for almost his entire career, but fans still seem to get behind him no matter what situation he is in. He has a similar following as Kofi Kingston and could be the next person to have a fairytale run before he retires from the sport.

As Mysterio has a lot of story going into the clash at Survivor Series, the company will have a lot more to play with just like they had when Kingston took on Daniel Bryan.
