5 Reasons You Should Watch NWA Powerrr

NWA Powerrr is the new YouTube show for the reborn National Wrestling Alliance brand. The company and program, owned by Billy Corgan and produced by David Lagana (former WWE creative) is bringing back a style and vibe of studio wrestling from the 80's. Although the show is 'old-school' in vibe there is a lot that a fan of modern pro wrestling can take away from the product. In this article, we will be looking at just 5 of the reasons that you should be making sure that NWA Powerrr is part of your weekly lineup of professional wrestling shows.

You don't even have to take my word for it. The 'Great One' himself even took time to praise the new show. The Rock wrote the following on Twitter about NWA Powerrr: "Congrats Jim [Cornette], the boys, crew etc. I stumbled across this show last night and enjoyed it. I grew up in territories and started my career at channel 5 in Memphis so I have a lot of love/respect for small scale, crowd tv shows. Cool vintage feel. Keep working hard boys. Rock." So, if it is good enough for one of the greatest minds and performers in WWE history surely it's got to be worth a shot,

NWA Powerrr is fresh, new and promotes a completely different style to the other more mainstream promotions in 2019. Yet, with a show so steeped in nostalgia for fans of Georgia Championship Wrestling, WCW and the old Power Hour it still delivers in a variety of ways that will keep you entertained for the full 1 hour runtime.

So, here's my 5 reasons that you should be watching NWA Powerrr.

It's Only 1 Hour Long

And for me an hour is the perfect amount of time for a pro wrestling show. Fans of NXT will be able to attest to how much you can really condense into an hour format and yet still feel like every segment had room to breathe. In a world where the 'traditional' television format sits between 2 hours (AEW, Smackdown, NXT on USA Network) and 3+ hours (Monday Night RAW) to be able to sit down and enjoy and episode of a television show (because that is what this is) in an hour is a breath of fresh air.

If you look at the broader format of television shows in the general, the most popular and longest running tend to hover around the 45 minutes to 1 hour mark. Be it Breaking Bad, Handmaid's Tale or Game of Thrones (which suffered when episodes started going longer) the ideal amount of time to keep an audience interested and invested in what happens next is an hour.

The Promos

If you loved Ric Flair or Dusty Rhodes cutting a promo in studio for Georgia Championship Wrestling then you are going to love NWA Powerrr.

The promo format for the show is simple, a desk is set up in the studio where wrestlers speak to a broadcast member before and after bouts. The promos that are cut are seemingly non-scripted and the performers have the opportunity to react to a small but vociferous crowd.

This format, without any awkward filming angles, invisible cameras or convoluted direction puts the focus squarely on the man or woman who is there to promote either themselves, an upcoming bout or an angle that they are tied to.

As of writing there have only been three episodes of the new YouTube show. In that time we have been introduced to a variety of different performers, whose motivations have been made extremely clear from the outset due to this simplified format of promo work.

Nick Aldis

The third reason you should be watching NWA Powerrr is for NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion 'The National Treasure' Nick Aldis. TNA's former Magnus has completely reinvented himself, comparative to the character he portrayed back in his 'British Invasion' days on TNA alongside Doug Williams.

Aldis is the perfect Champion to lead the new NWA into the next decade. The 'National Treasure' walks, talks and oozes class and professionalism, whether he is in front of a microphone or performing in-ring.

If you follow the US independent scene there is a chance that the last time you saw Aldis was as part of the ALL IN show produced by Cody Rhodes, The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega. The style of bout that Cody and Aldis had for the NWA Championship perfectly encapsulates how the NWA stylises their storyline-driven in-ring product.

In the very first episode you can see just how engaging Aldis can be as a promo, he builds the anticipation for his bout against Tim Storm throughout the broadcast and delivers an epic bout with a performer in Storm who is in the twilight of his career.

Damien Sandow Is Back

That's right, the former Damien Sandow has returned to professional wrestling with NWA. Although now you will find the former 'stunt double' of The Miz going by another name, Aron Stevens.

So far we have only seen Stevens in promo segments, speaking directly to broadcasters Joe Galli and David Marquez. Stevens demands at all times that the interviewer do not look him directly in eye, such is the level of stardom that he has received. In the latest 3rd episode he promoted a rather terrible trailer for his 'new film' Tropical Pirates. It is worth watching the entire episode for this promo alone.

It's a very interesting and perfect role for Stevens to portray. With The Miz having somewhat shed his 'Hollywood Z-Lister who thinks he is A-list' it is fantastic to see his former stunt double revelling in the role himself. Whether Aron will be able to translate his performances in ring remains to be seen but for now he is an extremely entertaining part of the NWA Powerrr presentation.

It's Different and It's Fresh

As much as I feel I have already highlighted this it is worth mentioning again. NWA Powerrr is completely different to any other professional wrestling product available right now.

With many fans expecting AEW to be the true alternative to WWE (to which they are doing a sterling job thus far) it's been interesting to see that a studio based wrestling show catered to fans of 'rasslin' has changed the game by showing that what is old is new again.

You will get a cast of colourful characters, from Jim Cornette on commentary, to Nick Aldis, James Storm, Tim Storm, Aron Stevens, Colt Cabana, Ken Anderson and Alysin Kay. The plethora of talent that NWA has amassed in a crowded marketplace is impressive and they are already starting to use some of the more tenured stars to push their homegrown talent like The Dawsons.

All in all NWA Powerrr IS the alternative that you need to check out. Also, it's free!
