John Cena did not hold back in his promos against Reigns

In addition to in-ring skills, the ability to speak on the mic is one of the most important attributes for a wrestler to achieve Superstar status in WWE. In fact, its importance can be seen in Superstars like Hulk Hogan and John Cena whose in-ring ability were moderate at best but could achieve superstardom purely because of their ability to connect with the fans.

We are now in what can be dubbed the 'Reality Era' in WWE, where the thin line between kayfabe and reality is blurred quite often during promos. Be it the feuds between The Rock and John Cena, or more recently John Cena and The Miz, the fans could tell that the heat between these wrestlers was not just limited to the screen.

That being said, here are five recent promos that were far too real, and maybe went a tad too far.

P.S. For the purposes of this list, I have considered promos from the past year or so only. Hence, no mention of the Punk pipebomb, The Rock-John Cena, and other older promos.

#5 Stephanie McMahon brings up Ronda Rousey's UFC losses

The feud between Ronda Rousey and authority figures Triple H and Stephanie McMahon kicked off at the Royal Rumble when Kurt Angle 'accidentally' revealed how the power couple really felt about Rousey. While the audience was privy to the fact that this was yet another storyline, things took a shocking turn on the episode of RAW before WrestleMania.

In an in-ring interview segment, Stephanie spoke about how Ronda would end up on the losing side this Sunday, and while that was fine, she concluded saying how everybody knew that Ronda doesn't take a loss too well.

The reason why this was little too far is that The Rowdy One has come out in the past about how low she was after her UFC loss to Holly Holm, even revealing that she contemplated suicide in the immediate aftermath. Bringing this up in a storyline felt uncomfortably real, with former UFC fighter Meisha Tate opining that Ronda definitely wouldn't have wanted the topic brought up if it were up to her.

#4 The Miz puts Enzo Amore in his place

Even during his brief time in WWE, Enzo Amore was a man with whom controversy went hand in hand. Supposedly hard to handle and not being one to mince words, Amore was an unpopular man backstage among his peers.

In a segment on Miz TV with Amore as the guest, The Miz brought up this very fact. He even went as far as to reveal how Enzo Amore was supposedly even kicked off a tour bus once! Another shocking part was when The Miz revealed his own well-documented struggles in the locker room in his initial days in the WWE.

#3 Roman Reigns calls out Brock Lesnar

Whether you love him or hate him, Roman Reigns is all set to be the next big thing and the face of WWE going forward. His match with Lesnar at 'Mania was probably the best built-up feud heading into the event.

While it might be true that WWE was working the angle to put Reigns over as the babyface, it cannot be denied that everything Roman has said about Brock Lesnar has far too much truth in it to ignore.

All through the feud, 'The Big Dog' called out Lesnar for being a part-timer with the biggest prize in the company, only showing up during big events. Even in interviews, he has taken shots at part-timers hogging all the spotlight and holding back younger talent.

Even the fans who hate Roman Reigns will have to grudgingly agree that it would indeed be good to have a Champion who shows up every week, instead of once in a few months.

#2 John Cena takes a shot at The Undertaker

In today's era of social media where kayfabe is almost dead, very few wrestlers still maintain character even off the screen. Nobody does this better than The Undertaker. The veteran is very rarely seen making public appearances out of character and does not even have a social media account!

This is why the fans were stunned when Cena took a shot at the Deadman for posting workout videos on his wife Michelle McCool's Instagram account. This was probably the first time a wrestler has referred to The Undertaker's off-screen persona on live TV, and because of this, the feud immediately escalated to the next level.

#1 The whole feud between Roman Reigns and John Cena

Now if there has been one feud in recent memory where the wrestlers did not mince words one bit, it has to be the one between Roman Reigns and John Cena. The two Superstars decimated each other on-screen week after week with scathing promos that were all too real.

John Cena called out 'The Big Dog' for not being able to cut good promos while Reigns shot back at Cena calling him lazy and a part-timer. He called out the 16-time Champion for being a hypocrite, referring to how Cena had taken shots at The Rock for abandoning WWE for Hollywood while doing the same thing himself now.

But the pinnacle came when Cena even brought out Roman Reigns' suspension for violating the wellness policy. Whew, talk about real!
