5 signs WWE wants Goldberg versus Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 37

What will happen when WWE finally puts Roman Reigns and Goldberg in the same ring?
What will happen when WWE finally puts Roman Reigns and Goldberg in the same ring?

The road to WrestleMania is upon us and while there are a lot of interesting questions for WWE to answer, one of the biggest is who will they tap to face Roman Reigns at the annual pay per view? With SmackDown not having a stockpile of main-event babyfaces, it seems like the company may have to bring in a legend to do the job.

While most fans were probably hoping for The Rock versus Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 37, it doesn't seem like WWE is going towards this goal. In fact, with Goldberg returning to the squared circle, and him having history with Roman Reigns, it feels like a collision between the two is almost unavoidable.

With that being said and the Royal Rumble jumpstarting the road to WrestleMania 37, here are five signs WWE wants to do Roman Reigns versus Goldberg at this year's show. As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments below and tell us who you think Roman Reigns will face.

#5. WWE bringing Goldberg back

Goldberg returning to WWE is a good sign that they want him to fight Goldberg.

Although others might be skeptical about Goldberg's road to WrestleMania 37, the fact alone that he has returned to WWE is a big deal. It also points to Goldberg being a critical part of WrestleMania 37, which means he will need a high-profile match in order to justify his presence at this year's show of shows.

If nothing else, Goldberg versus Roman Reigns is arguably the only match that could fit that high-profile billing, and nothing else would come close to it. The Fiend versus Goldberg would probably be in the same ball park, but it would bring back a lot of unfortunate memories.

Having said that, and with Goldberg most likely sticking around for WrestleMania season, it seems like the 2 Superstars are on a collision course of sorts. If not, it would be a huge missed opportunity on the company's part, and could cost them arguably one of the biggest dream matches still out there.

#4. WWE never declared Goldberg a RAW exclusive Superstar

Keep in mind that WWE never made Goldberg RAW exclusive.
Keep in mind that WWE never made Goldberg RAW exclusive.

What's to stop WWE from moving Goldberg to Friday Night SmackDown? While fans might argue that Goldberg is a RAW exclusive, he was never involved in the 2020 draft, and stands as a free agent. That means he can easily make his way over to the blue brand and challenge Roman Reigns for the title.

WWE could even use both shows to promote what could end up being WrestleMania 37's main event match. Not only does this give WWE double the screentime for storytelling, it also could create an anything-can-happen kind of atmosphere, if WWE wants to bend the rules.

For example, what if Goldberg keeps provoking Reigns to take a shot at him, prompting Reigns to go on RAW and attack the WCW legend? It would be a neat way to play with the reality of the situation, and turn Roman Reigns into an even bigger heel. It might even help build Goldberg as a babyface character, if done right.

#3. Putting Goldberg up against Drew McIntyre first

Goldberg versus Drew McIntyre. Who wins?
Goldberg versus Drew McIntyre. Who wins?

It's no secret that Goldberg is going to need to remind people why he is such a dangerous threat, which is why WWE could be starting him off with match against Drew McIntyre. At least that way, WWE puts Goldberg up against one of the company's top talents, and could even put the Championship on the Hall of Famer.

Or, WWE can let the two Superstars have a barnburner, and use interference to protect both in defeat. The company could even have Roman Reigns get angry at Goldberg for taking the main event spot at the Royal Rumble, and use that as a motive to go after him. That would leave things wide open for WrestleMania 37.

Then again, maybe WWE wants to do a more subtle approach and have the two cross paths closer to WrestleMania. This allows the company to keep their biggest match up in the air for a while longer, and would eventually build to a massive moment when Reigns versus Goldberg is finally announced.

#2. WWE doesn't seem to have many 'big-name' opponents for Roman Reigns

Beyond Daniel Bryan, WWE doesn't have a lot of established names on SmackDown.
Beyond Daniel Bryan, WWE doesn't have a lot of established names on SmackDown.

WWE is known for wanting to include the biggest names when it comes to their main event matches at WrestleMania, and this year's edition should be no different. The only problem with that idea, however, is the fact that it leaves very few candidates to go one on one with the biggest heel of the year in Roman Reigns.

There's an argument to be made that what Roman Reigns is doing right now is the best work of his career, and demands a suitably solid opponent. Brock Lesnar would be a good choice, but he apparently doesn't want to perform in empty arenas. This leaves WWE with very few options that would warrant a main event level match.

In the end, Goldberg versus Roman Reigns is simply the only way forward if Vince McMahon wants huge names in this match. It may not be as great as it would have been against The Rock, but it is still a dream match that will leave fans wanting more. It could even become a series between the two that rivals what The Rock and John Cena did several years ago.

#1. Roman Reigns and Goldberg's backstory

Will WWE finally make Roman Reigns versus Goldberg happen?
Will WWE finally make Roman Reigns versus Goldberg happen?

While it isn't much, Roman Reigns and Goldberg do have a bit of backstory that WWE can play off of. The two met for a face off weeks before their scheduled WrestleMania 36 championship match, which Roman Reigns was eventually forced to drop out of due to the pandemic.

Not only does this give WWE a chance to finally pull the trigger on the battle of the spears, but it also gives fans a match that was denied them a year ago. While some fans would probably prefer the match to still not happen, one has to remember that the story dynamics are quite different this time around.

There are a lot of options WWE can go with in this scenario, and the two men having history with each other definitely helps things. Where the company ultimately goes with this idea, if they do at all, remains to be seen. But there is the potential for something very special with this rivalry. Maybe even one that goes on to help define Roman Reigns' career as a whole.
