In the decades that the WWE has been around, there have been plenty of tough superstars who have shown their physical prowess both in and outside of the ring.

When the WWE Universe gets asked who the toughest is though, they may think of former UFC stars such as Brock Lesnar or Ken Shamrock, or perhaps proven big men such as Big Van Vader or Bam Bam Bigelow.

There is one superstar though who has everyone else beaten, and is by far the toughest man in WWE history - Haku.

Whilst his WWF career may not have been much, holding just one title (a sole tag team title reign with Andre The Giant) the stories that have come out about the Tongan star show him to be the absolute hardest man in history.

Here are five stories that prove Haku is the toughest WWE Superstar in history.

#5 Beef with Brutus

As a staple of the Hulkamania era, Brutus 'The Barber' Beefcake had a nice career in the WWF, before jumping to WCW around the same time his friend Hulk Hogan did.

But the Barber's sudden departure from the company may have been because he ticked off the wrong man backstage, that man of course being Haku.

The story goes that Beefcake filed a complaint with the WWF over the Tongan being too stiff, and when Haku was told, he immediately set out to hunt the future Zodiac down.

Choking him in the shower until he turned blue, and reportedly lifting Beefcake two feet off the ground, Haku's rage was only calmed when Hogan intervened, fearing for his friend, who admitted himself that Haku is the toughest of all time.

#4 The Mace in the hole

Rick Steiner (as well as his brother Scott) built a reputation on being tough, with their amateur wrestling skills no doubt proving this.

But even Rick knew he was no match for Haku, especially when he and Scott saw the Tongan face off against eight police officers.

Rick said:

"They shot him with mace and he closed his eyes and sucked it in...He just opened his mouth and took a deep breath".

Rather than be blinded by the stinging substance, Haku shrugged it off, with Steiner even joking it seemed to make him stronger.

Whilst details after the mace are unclear, just this chunk of the story proved just how tough Haku was, with Rick admitting that he completely changed the scale for tough guys.

“Scotty and I always thought we were tough guys, but that was before we met Meng.”

#3 Meng backs it up

After leaving the WWF, Haku joined WCW, working for the company until it's 2001 closure as Meng.

Whilst there, Meng found a new wave of men and women he would awe with his toughness, including Kevin Sullivan.

Speaking to WWE Classics, the Dungeon of Doom member recalled a time when the two of them were sat at a bar, before being accosted by locals, one of which used a vile slur against the Tongan.

"The next thing I know is that Meng goozles the guy like Mr. Spock ...It was fast and furious. He then grabbed another guy who tried to get involved and knocked him unconscious"

Whilst this would've been bad enough, Meng was far from finished.

"Meng bit through the guy’s shirt like a wolf, bit a chunk out of the guy’s back, then spit it on the floor"

Shockingly, no charges were ever filed.

#2 Hell over Haku

For those of you too young to remember, Frenchy Martin was a heel manager from Quebec, who would deride the USA, carrying a 'USA is not OK' sign to the ring.

Of course, if there's one thing he would never insult, it would be Haku, and with good reason; once saying he'd rather face eternal damnation than tick off the former WCW Hardcore Champion.

"I’m going to tell you the truth. If you have a chance to go to hell instead, you might as well go to hell because he’s unbelievable"

After an altercation at a bar (just one of many it seems), the heel manager decided to play hero, saving the life of one person who nearly got involved.

"The bouncer came in, but I knew the owner, and I said, ‘Get the bouncer out of there [or] he’s dead.’ And they got him out"

#1 Haku nose best

Probably the most famous story of Haku's toughness, this one was confirmed by the man himself in an interview.

According to Haku, he sat with some people at an airport bar, away from the faces also present, in an effort to maintain kayfabe.

This didn't go down well with some patrons of the bar, who approached and berated Haku about how wrestling is 'fake', in what we all know now was a very bad decision.

Proving just how real he could be, Haku reached for the man, and bit his nose clean off, before spitting it out.

Unsurprisingly, a fight started, with Haku and drinking partner, Siva Afi, emerging on top after the dust had settled.

Despite being sued for US$2.5 million, Haku still jokes about this incident to this day, perhaps the scariest part of all.
