5 Superstars John Morrison should wrestle in his return to WWE

One of the first free agent dominoes has fallen into place as John Morrison, the man known by many names, has agreed to a contract with WWE. Morrison won the third season of Tough Enough and wrestled for WWE from 2003 until 2011. Those who have followed him post-WWE know him by many other names including Johnny Mundo (in Lucha Underground) and Johnny Impact (in Impact Wrestling). In both promotions, Morrison won the top title and became an even bigger star than he was with WWE.

Since he was a coveted free agent even at the age of 39, many were curious to see if he would return to where his career started or join another promotion for which he hadn't wrestled. The speculation is now over as Morrison will join WWE.

Due to his impressive athletic ability, there is no shortage of talented wrestlers with which Morrison could tangle. While he's already fought the likes of Randy Orton, Kofi Kingston, and The Miz, there is a whole new crop of stars to battle.

While names like Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and AJ Styles are enticing opponents for Morrison, there are also some other matches that would make sense for WWE to book right off the bat. Here are five Superstars that Morrison should wrestle in his return to WWE.

#5 Shinsuke Nakamura

The Artist could battle with the Mayor of Slamtown.
The Artist could battle with the Mayor of Slamtown.

It's easy to see that the both John Morrison and Shinsuke Nakamura have similar auras. They are both "artist" types. Morrison was originally pushed as a version of the Doors' Jim Morrison. He proved with his ring work that he was so much more than just a gimmick, winning the Intercontinental Championship numerous times, as well as multiple tag team titles.

Who's the current IC Champ? Another eccentric showman named Shinsuke Nakamura. While he may not still hold the title when Morrison re-debuts, the showdown between the two would be enough to sell fans on a match. Morrison is known for his flashy moves and ostentatious apparel, and the caped Nakamura is really leaning into the whole "artist" thing.

The 'King of Strong Style' would certainly be a good match for the 'Mayor of Slamtown' because both men are masters of their craft. Morrison is an athletic star and Nakamura has done well with similar men like Ali and AJ Styles.

#4 Buddy Murphy

The Best Kept Secret
The Best Kept Secret

Buddy Murphy has taken a brief respite after being heavily featured in the "Who attacked Roman Reigns?" storyline. While the break is likely due to WWE trying to wrap up current storylines before the move to FOX, it still doesn't mean that the 'Best Kept Secret' shouldn't be tearing things up on the Blue Brand.

In 2019, he's been the Cruiserweight Champion, lost the title, and been announced as a member of SmackDown, only to not appear until summer. Due to the aforementioned, Murphy needs a push heading forward. WWE fans certainly know who Morrison is, so pairing the two together should only help each man.

Murphy has been billed as a cruiserweight, but looks twice the size of most Superstars on 205 Live. Despite that, Murphy still moves around like a man of 200 pounds. Morrison also moves around the ring like a cat due to his athleticism and parkour background. There would likely be a high amount of high-flying moves and knee strikes, but Murphy has already proven he's a maven in the ring with just two matches against Bryan and Reigns. He could certainly have a similarly brilliant match with someone like Morrison.

#3 Finn Balor

Finn Balor

Finn Balor may not have been a part of Lucha Underground, but he does share a similar body type and style with a huge chunk of LU's roster. Guys like Ricochet, Drago, Fenix and Aerostar were athletic men around 180-200 pounds with whom Morrison produced classics.

The former Universal Champion is one of many similar types on the roster, but Balor has an aura that sets him apart. He's proven that he can hang with anyone from Brock Lesnar to Seth Rollins despite always being the smaller man.

Morrison works well with any sized wrestler, but when two work-rate guys tangle, they usually put forth better matches. It would be similar to Daniel Bryan and Buddy Murphy's match on SmackDown. Both men are physical high-flyers and great workers. They wouldn't need to cut any promos because they'd just let their work in the ring speak for itself. Morrison could battle a heel Balor, if Balor joins the OC. He could then call on a former tag team partner, The Miz, for help.

#2 Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins also has many nicknames.
Seth Rollins also has many nicknames.

If they haven't already, any star who is great in the ring likely wants to face the next two men on this list. Seth Rollins is the top face in the company and despite some so-so matches during his first reign (he had to face Baron Corbin at three straight PPVS), he is still one of the best options to lead WWE.

While his second Universal Championship reign might be on borrowed time due to a rather unpleasant children's show host, he will still likely have a great match with anyone. Rollins is usually a hyper wrestler in the ring, rarely taking breaks unless he is completely destroyed. 'The Beastslayer' had great Intercontinental Championship matches with both The Miz and Dolph Ziggler, and Morrison has plenty of experience working with both of those men. Morrison is also freakishly fit like Rollins, so it would likely turn into an exciting game of one-upping each other.

Rollins is also one of the current WWE wrestlers most similar to Morrison, so it would almost be like Morrison squaring off against himself. While Morrison is 39 and Rollins is 33, both men are still great workers. Rollins always wants to have a great match and Morrison likely wants to prove that he still has it by facing the top guy in the company today.

#1 AJ Styles

Morrison would want some.
Morrison would want some.

If Rollins represents a younger Superstar that could provide a challenge for Morrison, then AJ Styles definitely represents a man closer to his age. Styles is regarded as one of the best WWE Superstars of the last 20 years. Who doesn't want to face a person like that?

Morrison was never considered a main event type guy in his first run with the company, but Styles proved that guys who have had success elsewhere can be just as good in WWE. The former Johnny Mundo has competed in other promotions and risen to the top each time. While Styles doesn't currently have one of the top prizes in WWE, it does not mean that he isn't still considered a dream match for everyone. Styles, like Morrison, works well with every type of wrestler and both men are former Impact Wrestling Champs.

Guys pushing 40 are proving every day that age isn't the impediment that it may be for athletes in the NFL, NBA or MLB. Chris Jericho, R-Truth, John Cena and Styles are all over 40 and still going strong.

The two men did compete in early 2016 for FWE in a 2-out-of-3 Falls match and a few other times on the independent scene before Styles signed with WWE. The match should happen on a bigger stage and WWE provides just that.
