WWE Backlash 2020 is set to air live on the WWE Network this Sunday as the wrestling community awaits The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever between Randy Orton and Edge. Both Superstars had a terrific encounter at WrestleMania 36, and they both had a lengthy match at WWE Backlash as per the rumor mill.

WWE Backlash has been an integral part of the company's PPV calendar. The first edition of this pay-per-view event happened in 1999, and the upcoming show will be the 15th one in the event's history. Many legendary names such as Vince McMahon, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Hollywood Hulk Hogan, Triple H, and John Cena have wrestled at this PPV.

This year, WWE has announced several high-profile bouts for the show, which include a dream match for the WWE title between Drew McIntyre and Bobby Lashley. Also, The Miz and John Morrison will try to win the Universal Championship from Braun Strowman in a handicap match.

Talking about the history of this event, here's a look at five WWE Superstars with the most defeats at Backlash.

#5 John Cena - 3 losses

The 16-time World Champion, John Cena, is currently on a hiatus. However, when he was an active Superstar, The Cenation Leader competed in many high-stakes match-ups at WWE Backlash. He even overcame a challenge from Randy Orton, Edge, and Shawn Michaels in a fatal four-way match at Backlash 2007 to retain his WWE Championship.

John Cena's three losses at WWE Backlash

John Cena suffered three defeats at this event, the first of which came against Brock Lesnar in a WWE title match. The Beast pinned Cena after a 15-minute encounter at Backlash 2003. His next defeat came five years later in a fatal four-way elimination match for the WWE Championship that also featured Triple H, JBL, and Orton. The Viper eliminated Cena from the contest with a Punt Kick.

In his last appearance at the PPV in question (2009), John lost his World Heavyweight Championship to Edge in a Last Man Standing Match. It is noteworthy that all of Cena's losses came in the form of World title matches.

Given that the Doctor of Thuganomics has become a part-timer now, it is unlikely that he would perform at WWE Backlash again in his career.

#4 Shawn Michaels - 4 losses

Shawn Michaels was one of the most popular Superstars of the Ruthless Aggression era, which is why he was regularly featured on the WWE Backlash match card during that time.

Shawn Michaels' four losses at WWE Backlash

At WWE Backlash 2003, The Heartbreak Kid joined forces with Kevin Nash and Booker T to take on the trio of Triple H, Ric Flair, and Chris Jericho. The King of Kings pinned Nash that night to pick up a win for his team. A year later, he unsuccessfully challenged Chris Benoit for his World Heavyweight Championship in a triple threat match also involving Triple H. Benoit ended up submitting Michaels to close the match and send the Canadian crowd home happy.

After securing a win at Backlash 2005, Michaels lost two matches on the trot as Shane McMahon and Vince McMahon defeated him in a tag team match where 'God' teamed up with Shawn. While at WWE Backlash 2007, Michaels was unsuccessful in a fatal-four way match for the WWE Championship, also featuring John Cena, Randy Orton, and Edge.

#3 Randy Orton - 5 losses

The Viper Randy Orton is the favorite to beat his opponent Edge in a technical wrestling match at WWE Backlash 2020. However, his past performances at this event have not been so great. Orton's last three singles matches at WWE Backlash have all culminated in a defeat for The Viper.

Randy Orton's five losses at WWE Backlash

Randy Orton battled Jeff Hardy for the United States title in 2018, just to fall short in the one-on-one match. In 2017, Jinder Mahal shockingly defeated him to claim the WWE Championship in the main event of this show, whereas the year before that, Orton had lost to Bray Wyatt via forfeit.

His last victory at Backlash came in 2009 when The Legacy defeated Batista, Shane McMahon, and Triple H in a six-man tag match. But, as mentioned earlier, Orton was a part of both the fatal-four way matches for the WWE title that happened in 2007 and 2008, losing in both of them.

The Apex Predator would probably end his Backlash losing streak this year with a massive win over The Rated-R Superstar this Sunday.

#2 Edge - 5 Losses

This year, The Rated-R Superstar Edge finds himself on the match card of WWE Backlash for the first time in eleven years. His last appearance at the event came in 2009 when he beat John Cena for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Edge's five losses at WWE Backlash

Although Edge has headlined the event in question multiple times, he has suffered many defeats at WWE Backlash. His first loss came in the year 1999 when he teamed up with Gangrel and Christian to take on The Ministry of Darkness in a losing effort. In 2002, Kurt Angle pinned him with an Angle Slam. Four years later, he failed to win the WWE Championship from John Cena when he faced off against him and Triple H in a triple threat match for the title.

The Ultimate Opportunist faltered in another multi-man match for the WWE title in 2007, while in 2008, The Undertaker defeated him via submission to retain his World Heavyweight Championship.

It is unlikely that Edge would be able to improve his win-loss record at WWE Backlash this year because the Creative team would probably want to extend his rivalry with Randy Orton until SummerSlam. Their trilogy could only progress if The Apex Predator defeats Edge this Sunday at the Performance Center.

#1 Triple H - 6 losses

Triple H secured a significant win at the third edition of WWE Backlash when The Two-Man Power Trip defeated The Brothers of Destruction in a Winner Take All-match for the WWF Championship, Intercontinental title, and also the tag team belts. However, his overall record at the event is not up to the mark.

Triple H's six losses at WWE Backlash

Triple H suffered his first loss at this PPV in 2000 when The Rock defeated him to win the World title, even though The Game had Stephanie McMahon and Mr. McMahon in his corner. His next defeat came against Hollywood Hulk Hogan in another World title bout at WWE Backlash 2002.

In 2004, Chris Benoit overcame a challenge from Shawn Michaels and The Game to retain his World Heavyweight Championship in a triple threat match. A year later, Batista managed to slay The King of Kings.

The father of NXT added one more defeat to his tally at WWE Backlash 2006, with John Cena beating him and Edge to keep hold of his WWE title. His last match at this event (2009) ended in a loss as well, courtesy of Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, and Ted DiBiase.
