5 Things that could realistically happen in WWE before 2022

From a storyline perspective, 2021 has already featured lots of twists and turns across WWE’s RAW, SmackDown and NXT brands.

On last week’s episode of RAW, Big E cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Bobby Lashley to win his first WWE Championship. Before the day of the show, the New Day member had looked likely to target Roman Reigns’ Universal Championship on SmackDown instead of Lashley’s title.

Looking at the current landscape of SmackDown, who would have thought a month ago that Becky Lynch would be the main heel in the women's division? The Man became WWE’s top babyface in 2018, but now she is being presented as one of the company's biggest villains.

As for NXT, the brand – now known as NXT 2.0 – recently underwent some major modifications. With a new look and emphasis on young, up-and-coming talents, the days of NXT being viewed as RAW and SmackDown’s rival seem to be over.

Although several changes have already taken place in WWE in recent weeks, more big developments are almost certain to follow in the next few months.

In this article, let’s take a look at five things that could realistically happen in WWE before 2022.

#5 The New Day teases a WWE Championship Triple Threat match

If Big E is still the WWE Champion in December, there will surely come a point when a New Day Triple Threat match is teased. WWE has booked plenty of title matches between babyface superstars in the past, with Hulk Hogan vs. Ultimate Warrior being the most famous example.

Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods have repeatedly stated that they will never break up. But just because the members of The New Day do not want to separate, that does not necessarily mean they cannot face each other in a match.

The storyline could revolve around all three men having respect for each other, as opposed to the animosity that usually fuels matches in wrestling. Once the match is over, The New Day could go back to performing alongside each other as tag team partners.

Big E immediately linked up with his New Day stablemates again on RAW after his recent WWE Championship win. On this week’s episode, the three men joined forces in a losing effort against Roman Reigns and The Usos in a six-man tag team match. Moving forward, The New Day could continue to gradually set up this clash between three best friends.

#4 WWE announces The Undertaker’s Hall of Fame induction

WWE used to announce Hall of Fame inductees between January and March in the build-up to the ceremony on WrestleMania weekend. But in 2019, the company took a different approach by announcing Batista and the nWo’s inductions in December.

It is unclear who will be inducted into the 2022 WWE Hall of Fame, but The Undertaker will surely be at the top of the list of candidates.

Several of The Deadman’s friends and co-workers appeared at his Final Farewell ceremony at Survivor Series 2020, which also included an introduction from Vince McMahon.

Unfortunately, the segment felt underwhelming, and it did not seem like a fitting way to celebrate The Undertaker’s iconic career. The fact that it took place without any fans in attendance at the WWE ThunderDome contributed to this disappointing outcome.

Now that WWE fans are allowed to attend events again, it would make sense for The Undertaker’s career to be celebrated at a fitting occasion.

Realistically, this opportunity could come in April 2022 at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony. The event, which will take place ahead of WrestleMania 38 weekend, will likely be held in The Undertaker’s home state of Texas. As a result, it would make perfect sense for the company to induct The Phenom next year.

If WWE takes the same approach as two years ago, do not be surprised if The Undertaker’s induction is announced in December.

#3 The Rock appears at WWE Survivor Series 2021

The Undertaker is not the only WWE legend who could be celebrated again in the near future. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson made his WWE debut at Survivor Series 1996, which means his 25-year anniversary is on the horizon.

In November 2015, WWE marked 25 years of The Undertaker by creating new merchandise and new original shows about The Deadman. He also teamed up with Kane at Survivor Series 2015 to defeat Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper.

Likewise, WWE celebrated Triple H’s 25-year anniversary in April 2020. Once again, new merchandise was created to mark the milestone, while an entire episode of SmackDown was dedicated to The King of Kings.

The Rock has said he is willing to return to WWE for one more match, with Roman Reigns likely to be his opponent in a clash between the two top stars.

A match between The Rock and Reigns looks set to take place at WrestleMania 38 in 2022 or WrestleMania 39 in 2023. The latter event is due to be held in Inglewood, California, and it is being marketed as WrestleMania Hollywood.

Survivor Series 2021 will take place on November 21 in Brooklyn, New York. If WWE promotes The Rock’s anniversary in the same way it did for The Undertaker and Triple H, perhaps The Great One will make an appearance. If he does, he could easily tease this showdown with Reigns.

#2 Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair become WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions

Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair are the top two heels in WWE’s women’s division right now. The long-time best friends currently perform on SmackDown and RAW, respectively, but that could change after the WWE Draft in October.

Over the last six years, Flair has mostly performed as a heel while Lynch cemented her status as one of WWE’s top babyfaces. Now, following The Man’s heel turn, there is no reason why the WrestleMania 35 main-eventers cannot finally form an alliance and chase gold together.

On the latest episode of WWE RAW, Nikki A.S.H. and Rhea Ripley end Natalya and Tamina’s 129-day reign as Women’s Tag Team Champions. Before Natalya and Tamina’s reign, the titles were held by Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler and Asuka and Flair.

With all due respect to those four teams, it felt like their pairings were thrown together at the last minute without much planning. For that reason, it has been difficult to get invested in any Women’s Tag Team title storylines over the last year.

Of course, SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch and RAW Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair will be involved in Women’s Championship storylines moving forward. But WWE could also use their star power to help elevate the Women’s Tag Team titles before the year is out.

#1 WWE separates AJ Styles and Omos

Nowadays, lasting almost an entire year as allies in WWE is somewhat of a remarkable achievement. AJ Styles and Omos formed an alliance back in October 2020, and they have stayed together ever since.

With that being said, it would be a surprise to see the gigantic Omos stay by Styles’ side much longer. The two men lost the RAW Tag Team Championship to RK-Bro at SummerSlam, and there is seemingly nothing left for them to achieve as a tag team.

When it comes to singles competition, Omos has not exactly helped Styles in recent months. The Phenomenal One has lost 11 of his last 14 televised singles matches, including a hard-fought defeat against Randy Orton on the latest episode of WWE RAW.

If Styles is ever going to be viewed as a world championship contender again, he would likely fare better alone. Similarly, if WWE wants Omos to reach the next level as a singles competitor, separating him from Styles is the right thing to do because it would let him stand on his own.

WWE usually splits up several tag teams in the annual draft in October. Even if Styles and Omos stay together after the roster changes, there is a good chance they could still go their separate ways by 2022.
