5 things WWE NXT got right this week (June 24, 2020)

This match will be MASSIVE!
This match will be MASSIVE!

WWE NXT was set to deliver once again this Wednesday just hours after news broke out that multiple WWE employees have tested positive for COVID-19, including some in-ring talents.

However, the pre-recorded show tried to take the worry off the NXT Universe’s minds as it gave us another entertaining episode that was full of action and some new rivalries.

Damian Priest was set to take on Cameron Grimes once again, while Aliyah and Rhea Ripley were booked in a match.

Bronson Reed had called upon Doomsday as Karrion Kross looked to set an example by taking out the big man. Keith Lee had the biggest hurdle ahead of him as he was booked to defend his NXT North American Championship in a Triple Threat match against Johnny Gargano and Finn Balor.

With so much action planned for the night, there was little that could go wrong with this week’s episode that delivered very well once again.

In this article, we will look at the five things WWE NXT got right on this week’s episode.

#5 A possible face-turn for Priest

Damian Priest was looking to teach Cameron Grimes a lesson once again on NXT this week, but The Archer of Infamy was found attacked outside the Performance Center.

This gave Grimes the confidence to come out to the ring and expect a win by forfeit, but Priest fought through the pain to come down to the ring for his match.

Priest’s ribs were heavily bandaged, and Grimes went right after the target to gain control of the match. While The Archer of Infamy kept trying to get back in the match and fight through the pain, he could not keep up the offense for long before collapsing to the mat.

This gave Grimes the opening to hit the Cave In on Priest and pin him to pick up the victory.

Priest could turn face on WWE NXT soon

The match was decent, and it seems like NXT is trying to turn Damian Priest babyface for the first time in his career. Priest has always looked like the perfect heel, but making him the underdog in this match and giving a heel like Grimes a chance to benefit from the opportunity is an indication that they have other plans for The Archer of Infamy now.

A babyface run could allow him big matches against men like Adam Cole and Karrion Kross, while Grimes could work his way up to become a major heel.

#4 Jake Atlas shows a lot of heart

After brutally attacking Drake Maverick over the past couple of weeks, NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar was out in the middle for his match against Jake Atlas.

Atlas seemed like the perfect man to stand up to Escobar after what had been done to Maverick last week. Atlas tried to gain control of the match after Escobar backed him into a corner early. The two men continued to trade strikes as an angry Atlas took the fight to the champion as he looked to avenge Maverick.

Joaquin Wilde and Raul Mendoza, who were at ringside, kept on taunting and distracting Atlas, and even though he made a late comeback in the match, he was put away by the NXT Cruiserweight Champion.

Will a new babyface faction rise on WWE NXT?

NXT is telling this story really well, and it seems like they are picking up different pieces from the NXT Cruiserweight Championship tournament to fit them into this rivalry. It seems likely that Kushida will also join Maverick and Atlas soon as the three men will try to take down Escobar and his villainous faction.

#3 Loony Lumis

It’s no secret that Dexter Lumis has been stalking, threatening, and attacking the members of The Undisputed Era for weeks, and Roderick Strong seems like the person most affected by the creepy NXT Superstar’s antics.

This week, Lumis was set to compete in a match against Strong, but it was obvious that the latter hadn’t been able to overcome his personal demons, even after a magnificent therapy session with Kyle O’Reilly.

Bobby Fish accompanied Strong out to the middle and tried several times to ensure that he does not run away from the fight and faces his fears. Lumis stood still in the ring for a few minutes before he started to follow his opponent around the ring.

Roderick Strong needs to get his mojo back on WWE NXT

The referee counted him out as he ran away, leaving Fish in the middle to call him back. This allowed Lumis the perfect opportunity to lock him in a submission hold to end the segment.

While there was no real match between these two men this week, it seems like the NXT creatives are doing well to keep the story ticking and giving Lumis a chance to shine against Undisputed Era. This could lead to a partnership between Lumis and The Velveteen Dream down the line.

#2 Karrion Kross’ thickest victory

Bronson Reed came out to the middle this week to face the man who he’d challenged on last week’s NXT. Karrion Kross had accepted the challenge and vowed to teach Thicc Boy a lesson.

Reed tried his best to show that he has what it takes to become a top star by taking the fight to Kross. Kross took a few strikes from Reed before returning the favor to show that he was not intimidated.

Kross hit the 330-pounder with a Suplex but Reed hit a jumping enzuigiri to surprise everyone and keep the match at a balance. After Reed hit his own German Suplex on Kross, he realized that it did not affect the newcomer who got right back up and hit Reed with a few suplexes before locking him in the Kross Jacket to pick up the victory.

Karrion Kross is setting his eyes on new NXT Superstars

This was a good match and NXT did well to not keep it one-sided. Kross has now overcome a heavyweight early on in his NXT career, and it could be to show that the newcomer can take on Keith Lee in the weeks to come.

#1 Keith Lee’s limitless victory

Last night’s main event on WWE NXT saw Keith Lee defend his NXT North American Championship against Finn Balor and Johnny Gargano in a Triple Threat match. The match would allow the winner to keep the North American Championship and challenge the NXT Champion Adam Cole in a Winner Takes All match.

With Lee as the babyface in the match, it was obvious that Gargano and Balor would both try to go against him. He used his size and power advantage over the two smaller men who relied on their speed and heelish tactics.

While the former Universal Champion was gaining momentum during the match, Lee recovered to take down both men at the same time to make a big statement.

All three men got enough of the action, and The Limitless One hit his finisher on The Prince of NXT to retain his title and now has an opportunity to take home the NXT Championship too.

Keith Lee is the future of WWE NXT

This was a good match that could have headlined any TakeOver event and delivered. Lee winning was the right choice as he has the most momentum behind him and a babyface needs to step up to Cole rather than a heel.

Will Karrion Kross wreak havoc when Lee and Cole come face to face? We’ll just need to wait a couple of weeks to find out!
