Shawn Michaels is more than a symbol of the very best in WWE, he is considered by many to be one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. While he did have a controversial earlier half of his career, when he returned to WWE in 2002, he had become a whole another person.

Willing to put over other Superstars, while not really concentrating on the Championship picture, The Showstopper went on to earn his name by putting up excellent matches with the very best Superstars on the roster. Be it with Kurt Angle, Randy Orton, Triple H, Ric Flair, and of course, The Undertaker, Michaels showcased why he will always be remembered as one of the most entertaining Superstars to walk into the ring.

A part of what made Shawn Michaels so special, aside from his charisma and ability in the ring, was his choice of a finisher. Before there was the RKO out of nowhere there was the Sweet Chin Music out of nowhere.

Shawn's patented Sweet Chin Music has been often imitated but never duplicated, and despite the continuous overuse of the move in modern wrestling, it stands alone. HBK's use of the move was as the nail in the coffin of his opponents and it often came out of absolutely nowhere.

In this article, we are going to take a look at the 5 most unexpected times Shawn Michaels hit his legendary Superkick. Without any further ado, let's get into it.

#5 Shawn Michaels Superkicks Stan

Shawn Michaels has plenty of ridiculously funny moments in his career, as can be expected from one of the co-founders of D-Generation X, but very few moments can beat out this one.

When HBK was suddenly told that they had been told that DX did not know the meaning of the word controversial, he was less than happy. Having built his career on controversy, Michaels decided to prove that he could create controversy.

He then asked a passing backstage WWE support staff, what his name was. When he replied Stan, he Superkicked him and then said, "See, I just kicked Stan."

He continued on a tirade, Superkicking every unfortunate soul to wander down that backstage corridor while Triple H chuckled.

Even more interesting is the fact, that the 'Stan' that HBK kicked, in the beginning, was none other than a very young Tye Dillinger aka Shawn Spears, who is currently in WCW. That was one Superkick that Spears did not see coming.

#4 Diesel

Kevin Nash and Shawn Michaels might be really good friends in real life, but as all of HBK's friends know, you don't turn your back on The Showstopper. That was one lesson that Diesel would have done well to remember at the 1996 Royal Rumble, but unfortunately, he was not ready.

In 1995, Shawn Michaels had done the unthinkable and had come out at #1 in the Royal Rumble to win the entire match despite that, outlasting every other Superstar. Thus, with one win already having come the previous year, it was not really expected that Michaels would win 1996 Royal Rumble again, although Hulk Hogan had won two back-to-back Rumbles before. But... that's Hulk Hogan.

This time, Michaels came out at the inconspicuous number of 18 and then continued to wrestle. He did not really feature as one of the main highlights of the event, and no one really thought that he would win.

With only four men left in the ring, it was The British Bulldog, Kama, Diesel, and Shawn Michaels. While Diesel was busy with Kama, Michaels was able to eliminate The Bulldog. However, when Diesel finally pushed Kama over the top rope, his old friend was ready behind him and hit him with the Superkick, which sent him tumbling over the ropes as he was eliminated.

#3 Shelton Benjamin

Possibly the best Superkick that Shawn Michaels has ever connected in his life, this one came on the back of an amazing match with the up-and-coming Superstar Shelton Benjamin.

At this time, Benjamin was looked on as one of the future stars in WWE. He had wrestled with Evolution at the start of his career and had got a push, although that did not last long. Unfortunately for Shelton, things would not wind up working out for him in WWE, and he would leave the company. He has returned since, but not really had any major success.

However, before all of that, during a match with Shawn Michaels, which was not really supposed to be special, the two men created a moment that will forever go down as iconic in WWE.

Shelton was apparently thrown by Michaels outside the ring, but he had hung on to the ropes. He tried to jump into the ring, and immediately, in a split second, it was obvious that was a mistake, as Michaels hit him with a Superkick in mid-air. It was one of the most beautiful Superkicks of all time, and will forever be one of the most unexpected as well.

#2 Barbershop with Marty Jannetty

Is there a more iconic Shawn Michaels moment?

This is the moment in WWE history that The Showstopper became the Heartbreak Kid that the WWE Universe knows and loves.

Before all of this, he was in a tag team with Marty Jannetty. The two were inseparable and had amazing matches with whichever Superstars they would face in the ring. Known as The Rockers, they were fan favorites and loved by the WWE Universe. Unfortunately, for their fans, it was all leading to heartbreak.

The Rockers were having some trouble between them and it was seen that Michaels might turn his back on Jannetty. A Barbershop segment was set up as a chance for the two tag team partners to reconcile and set their differences aside.

It appeared that's exactly what happened, as Michaels shook Jannetty's hand and hugged him, raising his arm as the crowd cheered.

That changed in a second. Michaels suddenly turned and hit Jannetty with a Superkick. He stood looking as there was stunned silence from the crowd as they could not believe what they were seeing. The next moment he put Jannetty through the Barbershop window, and the Rockers were no more. Shawn Michaels had arrived.

#1 Shawn Michaels vs Triple H vs John Cena

Survivor Series 2009 was about to see three of the best Superstars to ever enter a WWE ring face off against each other in a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship.

The then-WWE Champion John Cena was in quite the conundrum, as he found himself facing not only Triple H but also HBK. Shawn Michaels and Triple H were united as D-Generation X during this time as well, which only added to his concerns.

The two were best friends, had put their past differences aside and had been creating chaos on the main roster together. Surely, they would work together to put John Cena out of action first before turning on each other?

That's possibly what both John Cena and Triple H thought, as did the WWE Universe.

Nope.

Shawn Michaels faced off against Cena and it looked like he would team with Triple H after all, as the two both focused on Cena. However, Michaels changed the game, by quite literally, kicking The Game out of the ring with a Superkick.

The resultant shock of the WWE Universe could not have been better portrayed on Cena's face.

The three went on to have a match that Cena was eventually able to win, but that Superkick remained the highlight of the night, and it was Michaels who had once again, stolen the show.
