5 WWE couples we surprisingly never saw together on WWE TV

Brock Lesnar and Sable

There are many high-profile couples in the WWE in the current climate, and with the reality era in full swing, they rarely have much choice but to acknowledge them. When the WWE relied heavily on kayfabe to the point where heel wrestlers would not travel with babyfaces, they were able to cover up relationships and pretend that they weren’t even happening.

Unfortunately for the WWE, social media has managed to ruin any chance of that. Wrestlers in love want to express that through tweets and Instagram posts, as shown when Lana and Rusev annoyed management recently by getting engaged and forcing a storyline in which Dolph Ziggler was wooing Lana to be cut short.

Most couples nowadays are paired in some form or another on WWE TV. Miz and Maryse, John Cena and Nikki Bella, Maria and Mike Kanellis just to name a few. They live together, travel together and get to spend their relationship doing the job they love.

There are some couples throughout history though, which may have been acknowledged as being together in other programmes on the WWE Network such as various documentaries and events like the Hall of Fame, that were never a part of storylines on the main WWE shows, Raw and SmackDown.

These high profile relationships could have potentially increased viewership and make the WWE a lot of money if handled correctly. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, but this article will take a look at 5 couples that we surprisingly never saw on WWE TV together.

#5 Dolph Ziggler and Nikki Bella

I
It just didn't work out...

Before Nikki Bella and John Cena became a behind the scenes power couple, Nikki Bella was dating one of the most underrated wrestlers in WWE, Dolph Ziggler.

At the time, Nikki was busy trying to make a name for herself in the women’s division, teaming with her twin sister Brie, and working as a heel.

Dolph was just starting out and looked to have a lot of potential despite not really doing much in the first two years following his singles debut in 2008.

They dated for just over two years and split up in 2010. Dolph was just coming out of an on-screen relationship with Maria and went into a romantic storyline with Vicki Guerrero. Nikki went on to be one of the most successful Divas of all time with a Divas Championship reign outlasting any other.

I can’t believe that these two were not popped into a storyline together as Dolph was in on-screen relationships as part of his storylines at the time. The chemistry might have been a bit better between these two and Dolph backed up with Twin Magic behind him might have had a little more success.

Despite a couple of World Championship reigns for Dolph, he has often floated around the mid-card with nothing much to do and no storylines to keep the crowd entertained. One has to wonder how things would have worked out had he been paired with Nikki on screen. Heck, she might never have even dated John Cena.

#4 John Cena and Mickie James

John Cena dated Mickie James when they were both at the top of their game in the company. For those of you that are recent fans of the WWE product, before her hiatus and return, Mickie James was one of the leaders of the WWE Divas, with multiple championship reigns and great matches behind her.

John Cena was actually popular with the crowd and quickly picking up multiple WWE Championship reigns and main eventing pay-per-views left, right and centre.

The problem is, Mickie James was dating Kenny Dykstra and John Cena was actually married at the time so there was a lot of drama here. It was reported that when it all came to light, it kicked off in the locker room and it led to Dykstra getting fired while James was transferred and humiliated before she was eventually released. However, Cena remained at the top of the company for years to come.

Even though Mickie actually asked John Cena out in a backstage segment and there were several hints on WWE TV, they were never shown as a power couple. They could have had a relationship on TV to rival that of Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.

One would assume that the reason for this would be John Cena being married at the time and it wouldn’t have exactly shown him in the best light. They may even have had to turn him heel at some point. Nevertheless, this hasn’t stopped WWE in the past and it’s not like them to miss out on a chance to make money.

Capitalising on controversial relationships is their bread and butter. Just ask Edge and Matt Hardy.

#3 Edge and Beth Phoenix

Is there a m
Is there a more perfect couple out there?

We have seen Edge and Beth Phoenix together at various WWE events, most notably, the WWE Hall of Fame. They are about as perfect as you can get when it comes to a WWE couple. The number of accolades they have together is immense and they seem extremely happy together.

They also have a couple of children together and have now been married for around a year, having tied the knot in 2016. Edge was actually retired when they got together, having left wrestling behind due to the fact that another bump may well have left him disabled for life.

Beth, on the other hand, left wrestling to focus on family. She also went back to school for a while to study forensic psychology to add to the degree in criminal justice she achieved years prior.

Beth is only 36 though and has often hinted at a return. I can’t believe WWE has not been able to tempt her back, especially when they were topping up on talent to fill out the rosters for the brand split. She would be the perfect addition to bring further competition to the women’s division.

This would also give the WWE the opportunity to have Edge back on TV as he could be in Beth’s corner, be her Manager or they could be involved in other creative storylines together as Beth dominates the division once again.

They would have fantastic chemistry on screen and let’s face it, Edge is fantastic on the microphone so it would certainly make promos a little more exciting when it came to title matches. It remains to be seen if we’ll ever see them together on WWE TV, but I live in hope.

#2 Brock Lesnar and Sable

A taste
A taste of what it could have looked like...

Brock Lesnar, the current WWE Universal Champion, is actually married to Sable. They prefer to avoid the limelight and all the publicity that comes with being such high-profile celebrities but it doesn’t really explain why WWE has never paired them up on television.

Brock and Sable got together not long after she returned to the company in 2003. Sparks flew, emotions ran high and they ended up getting married. This wasn’t before calling the engagement off at least once though. Despite a rocky start, they have remained together ever since, rarely being seen together outside of their remote country home.

Both Sable and Brock left WWE in 2004/2005, but Brock left on much better terms that Sable did. Brock eventually came back as a part-time superstar in 2012 and has continued to dominate despite working limited dates.

Brock has Paul Heyman backing him up at the moment, but it’s beyond me why WWE haven’t let bygones be bygones and asked Sable back to accompany him in a Maryse type role. She should be helping him win matches and basically standing next to him looking beautiful. Heck, we know she certainly has the credentials to fill both those roles if she didn’t want to wrestle anymore.

Sable is nearly 50 at the time of writing, so she is probably completely done, it’s surprising however that WWE have not done more to try and bring her back so they can be the ultimate power couple.

They could have had quite the feud with Triple H and Stephanie McMahon when Brock and Hunter were paired up to fight anyway. It would have added an extra dimension giving Stephanie someone else to slap other than Paul Heyman.

#1 The Undertaker and Michelle McCool

<p>
Age is just a number.

The Undertaker is one, if not the most respected wrestler of all time. His career has spanned decades and he has given his whole life to the WWE.

Some of you who don’t follow the locker room talk might not know that The Undertaker is actually married to Michelle McCool. Michelle McCool was at the top of the Divas division just a few years ago as she had multiple Women’s Championship reigns and she was the inaugural WWE Divas Champion.

The Undertaker only retired last year but was married in 2010. Michelle McCool has never appeared on WWE programming with her husband barring appearances at fan events and other productions such as the WWE Hall of Fame.

Michelle, like Beth Phoenix earlier in the article, has hinted at a return in the past. However, it has never come to pass. She has actually suffered from skin cancer and even posted an Instagram picture of some of the treatment she received for the mole on her back.

She may well still be fit to compete though. The problem now is that The Undertaker is now retired by most accounts so it’s very unlikely we’ll see them together on WWE TV.

There would have been a lot of benefits to this pairing though. They made a marriage work so I think they’d be good on screen together. The Undertaker, the devil worshipper, and Michelle McCool, the devout Christian — this dark and light pairing would have made for an awesome on-screen couple.

It also may have brought an extra dimension to The Undertaker’s last few matches as other wrestlers could have used McCool to get to The Undertaker on a personal level. As much as he is one of my favourite wrestlers, it did feel that something was missing once the streak was broken and this could have filled the void.

I have no doubt that Michelle would still have been able to go in the ring too, so it’s surprising the WWE never brought her back to accompany her husband in his last few contests.
