Sports entertainment or pro-wrestling can often be a family affair. In order to reach the top of the mountain, siblings have turned on each other, friendships have broken up and families have been torn apart.

There are many second and third-generation wrestlers in WWE. While some of them have upheld their predecessors' legacies, others surpassed their famous fathers and grandfathers and became more successful in the company.

However, there have been cases than have seen Superstars not only choose to follow in their fathers' footsteps, but also joining forces inside the ring to take on their rivals. In this article, we'll go back in time and examine these five father and son duos that teamed up in the ring.


#5 Vince and Shane McMahon

Shane McMahon found success in his father's billion-dollar company as an in-ring competitor. In his career, he has held the WWE European Championship, Hardcore Championship and he also held the SmackDown Tag Team Championship with The Miz. Vince, however, tops his son when it comes to World Title victories.

The chairman is a two-time World Champion, having held the WWE and ECW Championships one time each. Even though Shane aligned with Vince and The Corporation during The Attitude Era, his purchase of WCW caused a rift between the two, which finally subsided in 2006 after Shane-O-Mac became involved in a feud between his father and Shawn Michaels.

At Backlash, the McMahons teamed up and defeated Michaels and his tag team partner, a certain "higher power", who Shawn Michaels held in deep reverence. in a No Holds Barred tag team match. Their feud with HBK continued until SummerSlam 2006, where they lost to D-Generation X (Shawn Michaels and Triple H).

#4 Curt and Larry Hennig

Former WWE Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel is a third-generation Superstar who got his name by combining the first name of his father Curt Hennig, also known as Mr. Perfect, and then nickname, or moniker, of his grandfather Larry “The Axe” Hennig. However, before Curtis Axel’s father joined WWE, he competed in the American Wrestling Association, a promotion that his father "The Axe" found huge success in.

Like his old man, Mr. Perfect became one of the biggest stars in AWA. He captured the AWA World Heavyweight Championship and Tag Team Championship, surpassing his father's accomplishments. In 1985, the WWE Hall of Famer joined forces with "The Axe" to take on The Road Warriors. They also battled another famous father and son duo, Verne & Greg Gagne.

The Hennigs later went on to capture the NWA Pacific Northwest Tag Team Championships together.


#3 Fritz and the Von Erich Brothers

In 1982, the late WWE Hall of Famer Fritz Von Erich competed in his last match, taking on King Kong Bundy. He hung up his boots so that he could focus on his managerial duties with World Class Championship Wrestling. At WCCW’s Parade of Champions event in 1984, Fritz returned to the squared circle and aligned with his sons Kevin and Mike Von Erich to battle their rivals, The Fabulous Freebirds.

The Von Erichs defeated The Freebirds to capture the NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Championships at the event. Fritz would vacate the title later that night when he officially retired, and another of his sons, Kerry, would take his place as the third member of the championship team.

#2 Dusty & Dustin Rhodes

Dustin Rhodes, better known for his run WWE as Goldust, teamed up with his father "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes in WWE and in WCW. After defeating "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase one-on-one during his initial run in WWE, Dustin teamed up with his father at the Royal Rumble PPV in 1991 to take on DiBiase and his manager/partner/lackey, Virgil.

Although they were unsuccessful in that outing, they joined forces once again, but this time it was in WCW. They battled Terry Funk and Bunkhouse Buck at Clash of The Champions XXVIII, and they came out victorious.


#1 “Cowboy” Bob and Randy Orton

In 2005, Randy Orton inducted his father “Cowboy” Bob Orton into the WWE Hall of Fame. Bob Orton became embroiled in the bitter feud between his son and The Undertaker. He unsuccessfully interfered in The Viper's match with The Phenom at WrestleMania 21, where Randy was unable to end the now-legendary "Streak", but he managed to help Randy defeat 'Taker in a rematch at SummerSlam later that year.

At No Mercy 2005, the father and son duo teamed up and successfully defeated The Deadman in a 2-on-1 casket match. They teamed up again several weeks later, and also joined forces with Mr. Kennedy to take on Eddie Guerrero, Batista and Roddy Piper in a losing effort. While they lost more often than they won, it was a great experience for both men who had a big part in defining both of their own generations.
