The Fiend has already laid down a challenge for the Universal Championship, but who he’ll face at Hell in a Cell still remains to be seen. Bray Wyatt has been stalking and attacking current Universal Champion Seth Rollins for a few weeks now, but there are still several weeks to go before the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, and the Universal Championship could change hands during that period.

For this week’s RAW, WWE has scheduled a huge Fatal 5-Way Match where AJ Styles, Robert Roode, Rey Mysterio, Ricochet, and Shinsuke Nakamura will battle it out for an opportunity to clash with Rollins for the top prize on next week’s season premiere of RAW.

With so much on the line and so many top Superstars involved, it’s hard to predict who will come out on top as the #1 contender to Seth Rollins' Universal Championship.

In this article, we take a look at why Rey Mysterio should be the man to win the Fatal 5-Way Match to emerge as the #1 contender for the Universal Championship.

#1 Underdog storylines are still a big hit

Fans love to cheer for the smaller guy

Remember when underdog storylines were all the fans wanted to see? Well, they’re still a huge hit with the crowds and help WWE bring more attention to their product.

From Rey Mysterio’s World Heavyweight Championship win over Randy Orton and Kurt Angle to Seth Rollins win over Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship, there’s something about underdog storylines that really click with the WWE Universe.

With that in mind, Rey Mysterio is the classic underdog in the Fatal 5-Way Match scheduled for RAW. He’s had a losing streak in recent months and is one of only two babyfaces who will be a part of the match.

Even though he is one of the most accomplished WWE Superstars who will participate in the match, he will be treated as an underdog among men like AJ Styles, Ricochet, and Shinsuke Nakamura.

This could provide creative with the ultimate opportunity to give Mysterio another one of those underdog babyface pushes, which has worked so well in the past. Scoring a victory in the Fatal 5-Way match will surely help him boost his career and get on the same path King of the Ring finalist Chad Gable has been on during the past few weeks.

#2 He hasn’t had a major championship match since his return

Mysterio hasn't had a top title shot in a long time

Since returning to the WWE last year, Rey Mysterio has battled in several high profile matches. The highlight of Mysterio’s current tenure has been his United States Championship win, but he was only able to carry the title for 15 days before being forced to relinquish it due to an injury.

Being such a huge Superstar with such a massive following, Mysterio is one man who deserves a shot at WWE’s biggest title before he calls it a day. Mysterio has never competed for the Universal Championship and this could be the perfect opportunity. WWE should him a shot at the Championship, so that his fans can rest assured that their idol was given at least one legitimate opportunity at WWE's premier title.

#3 The fans deserve a Mysterio vs Rollins one-on-one match

The two men haven't had a chance to go one-on-one yet

Rey Mysterio competed against almost every single mid-card and upper card wrestler that stepped foot in the ring and remained one of WWE’s biggest babyfaces before leaving the company in 2015.

Upon returning to the company in the latter part of 2018, Mysterio has given fans dream matches involving Superstars such as AJ Styles, Andrade, and Samoa Joe.

Seth Rollins is one Superstar who could prove to be a great opponent for the 'Master of the 619', as the two can work off each other’s unique style. This is a major reason why WWE should book a one-on-one match between these two mega Superstars before it's too late.

A headlining match with such a major title on the line could give fans something to remember before Mysterio actually decides to hang up his boots.

#4 A loss won’t hurt the Superstar

Rey Mysterio is at a point in his career where he is cheered on by his loyal fans no matter who he’s competing against. As a true wrestling legend, he has managed to make such a name for himself that the result of his matches don't affect his fans. It's what he does in the ring that matters most.

Rollins is set to face The Fiend at Hell in a Cell for the Universal Championship and with all the hype built around the match, it’s unlikely creative will allow Rollins lose the title at this point.

With that in mind, WWE will be looking for a Superstar who can take a clean loss from Rollins without taking the Universal Championship home. Mysterio can do the job extremely well without even returning to the Universal Title picture again, as fans would be looking forward to a match between Mysterio vs. Rollins more than the result.

The other Superstars in the Fatal 5-Way Match still have a lot to achieve in their WWE career and won’t be looking to lose to the Universal Champion at this point.

#5 It could provide the ultimate boost for Mysterio & Dominick

The father and son duo need a boost to get their storyline going

WWE has been trying to build on Rey Mysterio’s son Dominick for quite some time, and have included him in his father’s storylines. This was on display during Mysterio’s feud with Samoa Joe where Dominick showed up to influence the storyline.

In August, Mysterio appeared to announce his retirement from wrestling after a string of losses, but was stopped by his son Dominick, who motivated his father to carry on. While fans believed that this could lead to Dominick’s in-ring debut sooner rather than later, he seems to have disappeared from television.

WWE could inject Dominick back into the picture by putting him at his father's side during the Fatal 5-Way Match on RAW this week. He could help motivate Mysterio to win the match and go on to battle for the Universal Championship.

The chemistry and storyline could begin from there. The company can take it and make it something better in the coming weeks, after Mysterio has received a huge title opportunity. Perhaps a loss in the Universal Championship match could even spark a character change for Mysterio.

#6 It opens up another opportunity for The Fiend

The Fiend could really work off this booking
The Fiend could really work off this booking

The Fiend has been on the prowl for legendary Superstars since his WWE debut. He has become the most feared Superstar on the roster and has made a huge impact every time he’s made an appearance.

One of the unique ways The Fiend has been making his mark is by attacking legendary Superstars. He has already attacked Kurt Angle, Mick Foley, Jerry Lawler, and Kane in his quest to prove that he’s not afraid of anyone, and that others should be afraid of him instead.

The Fiend has also attacked Seth Rollins and could continue to do so in the coming weeks in the build-up to Hell in a Cell. Booking a match between Rollins and an active legendary performer could allow The Fiend to kill two birds with one stone and leave his biggest mark yet.

Fans have been expecting The Fiend to attack Mysterio for quite some time, and he could do so during a match with Rollins. This would make a huge impact and send a bold statement to the entire WWE Universe.
