7 Sins of Bret 'The Hitman' Hart

Behind the pink and the black, Bret Hart was as sinful as everyone else

Before the Attitude Era kicked in, and in the aftermath of the Steroids scandal, emerged a superstar who called himself the ‘best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be’. When Hulk Hogan was on his way out of WWE, and the company pinned their hopes on Lex Luger, the fans began to back a smaller, technically sound superstar who (along with members of the Kliq) would carry the company on his back through the early 90s.

Sure, he’s a 5 time WWE Champion, who spent more time than any wrestler in the 90s as the top dog in the company (654 days) and was the first ever WCW Champion born outside the United States. But even Bret Hart isn’t a man without fault. Read on and find out more about Bret Hart and his sins.

7: Envy: The Burial of Seth Rollins

Even as a grizzly veteran, Bret Hart is merciless on young talent

Seth Rollins has had a spate of bad luck recently, not only injuring John Cena and Finn Balor, but ending Sting’s career. What made it worse for Rollins though is the fact that his own idol, Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart called him an unsafe wrestler. Bret claims that through his own decorated career, he never injured a single opponent.

Be that as it may, it is also true that wrestlers today work a much more physical style; and while we make no bones about Bret being one of the greatest of all time, he did not work the spots the modern wrestlers partake in. We can only conclude that Bret is jealous of Seth’s success, and misses being able to compete in the ring again. He’s become a bitter and whiny old-timer.

6: Wrath: Bret’s altercation with Shawn Michaels

A hilarious story that involves a toilet stall and Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler as well

The Shawn Michaels-Bret Hart feud from the 90s was so memorable because they had actual problems with one another. Unlike the talent of today, who are all great friends in real life, Michaels was known to run his mouth. Once, in the toilet, Shawn made a passing comment at Bret, and all incensed Bret attacked him, taking him down.

Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler was in a toilet stall at the time and had to break the fight. As Cornette mentions in this video- history doesn't mention if Lawler wiped.

5: Lust: “Sunny days” comment

Don't worry Hitman. We’d stare too.

Live on air, Shawn Michaels accused Bret Hart of having ‘Sunny Days’ ie. an affair with Sunny. Bret has of course, since gone on to deny it and said Shawn Michaels is a homewrecker, but the fact remains that speculation between Bret and Sunny having an affair did do the rounds.

Of course, Michaels was known to be an unpleasant person, and it’s just as plausible that all of this was nothing more than lies.

4: Pride: Bret Hart’s home/shrine to Bret

There’s no place like (this) home

Scott Hall talks about the one time he visited Bret Hart’s home and realized that it’s a shrine to the Hitman, in this link below. As one can hear in all of Hart’s shoot interviews, he (deservedly) believes that he’s one of the greatest of all time. And as a consequence is obsessed with himself.

But putting up a poster of yourself, in your Sgt. Pepper’s jacket, right over your bed is a bit much, innit? Click on the link below for more details.

3: Gluttony: Reluctance to drop the belt

Bret Hart's reluctance to lose in Canada led to the Montreal Screwjob

Many wrestlers have speculated that Bret Hart had lost the ability to distinguish between reality and kayfabe, and by refusing to lose in Canada, deserved to have the ‘Montreal Screwjob’ happen to him. One of the few instances in which wrestling has broken kayfabe on screen, The Montreal Screwjob is an infamous episode in WWE history.

Vince McMahon stopped a match between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart despite the planned finish, when Michaels got Hart in the Sharpshooter. McMahon was afraid that Bret would carry the WWE Championship to WCW, which led to this tragic episode. Clink link below.

2: Sloth: Promo on Bret’s cat

This promo was a cat-astrophe

Bret Hart admits that working in WCW was not always pleasant. Because of their unplanned system of operations, talent would be sent to the ring to cut promos on subjects they had no idea about.

During one such instance, a lethargic Bret Hart spoke about his cat. And the WCW universe listened in rapt attention.

1: Greed: Leaving WWE for WCW

An incident which led to the Montreal Screwjob

Sure, it was a better offer with more money and fewer dates. But whatchoo gonna do brother, when bad booking runs wild on you?

Bret Hart’s career was over long before he was injured, because of this mistake. WCW never got the best out of Bret and once you look at his initial reluctance to go to WCW, you get the feeling that Bret knew that WCW creative wouldn’t be good for him.
