AEW Full Gear: 5 Possible theories about why MJF surprisingly betrayed Cody Rhodes

MJF turned on Cody Rhodes after throwing in the towel

Sure, at the end of AEW Full Gear everyone is going on about just how good Kenny Omega vs. Jon Moxley was, just how brutal it was. But pardon me when I say that that is not the most significant event to come out of the pay-per-view.

MJF, who's always claimed just how close he has been to Cody Rhodes in the past, turned on his supposed best friend, after throwing in the towel during Cody's match with a certain Chris Jericho. A lot of us saw this heel turn coming but even then, this was a great moment.

But why did AEW choose to have Cody Rhodes get betrayed by one of his most trusted lieutenants, his cornerman in his big Championship match? I invite you to leave a comment and let me know why you believe it happened in the comments section below.

#5 So that Cody Rhodes does not get another title shot soon

If you remember the amazing promo that Cody Rhodes cut on AEW Dynamite, he pretty much said that he does not need another title shot if he comes up short against Chris Jericho. MJF made sure this happened and I'm pretty certain that he's going to use the fact that Cody Rhodes was misusing his position to get title shots as the reason.

The long road back for Cody Rhodes to the title picture will be the big story for AEW in 2020, I'm certain. We all know that he's going to get another shot. Like him or hate him, he's probably the biggest babyface in professional wrestling right now and someone who has upped his game since leaving WWE.

#4 Cody Rhodes vs. MJF is a money feud

There are those in AEW like say, The Young Bucks and even Kenny Omega, who like to tell stories with how they compete in the ring from the opening bell to the closing bell. There are others still Cody Rhodes and MJF who still belong to the old school, I suppose. In a lot of ways, Chris Jericho is also a part of the very same category.

It has been said time and time again that every ticket is sold before the bell rings in professional wrestling. Rhodes likes for there to be a storyline heading into every match so that the crowd is invested from the very start. He also likes to tell stories on the microphone, much like MJF does.

When these two men feud, imagine how personal it will be because of how close both men were to one another before the heel turn went down!

#3 MJF is a heel even though Cody Rhodes is a babyface

At least in the way that pro wrestling has been presented to us thus far, we've hardly ever seen heels and babyfaces get along on camera. WWE always ensures that heels are only friends with heels while babyfaces are only friends with babyfaces.

It was strange indeed to see MJF and Cody Rhodes portrayed as best friends, even though they're on two ends of the crowd-pleasing spectrum. MJF is a heel even when he is not on camera, making fun of the crowd that comes to see him perform.

This is a friendship that was never going to last, was it, dear reader? That is why even though the heel turn was surprising, it wasn't unexpected.

Do you guys think AEW will make MJF join the Inner Circle next week? Or is he far better off on his own?

#2 Only major surprise to come out of AEW Full Gear

So during the course of AEW Full Gear, Pentagon Jr. was confronted by his own doppelganger in a really head-scratching moment indeed. It turned out to be 'The Fallen Angel' Christopher Daniels who had been away since Pentagon and Fenix had launched a brutal attack on the man. With all due respect to the legend, his return wasn't exactly a very noteworthy event.

As good as the matches at AEW Full Gear were, there were no title changes at all. The only return was the one I've mentioned meaning that there were no real surprises either, or headlines emerging from the event. The only thing that qualifies is the big MJF turn if you can even really call it that.

Now, there's a talking point for all the Facebook groups and chat forums where fans gather to discuss professional wrestling content. The buzz generated has certainly been noteworthy.

#1 A great hook to get people to tune into Dynamite next week

I am guessing that the saga between Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega is now over. I'm also guessing that Riho will move on to a new challenger, now that Emi Sakura has been vanquished from the title picture.

Neither scenario is enough to draw in a casual fan to watch AEW Dynamite when it airs next week, at least live. But MJF's heel turn, on the other hand, is something that needs to be explained and the idea of him with a live microphone is always compelling.

One needs to remember that pro wrestling is something that is a never-ending soap opera and while nothing sells a soap opera better than a betrayal. For one best friend to betray another is always a compelling reason to tune in.

Will you be watching the next episode of Dynamite live, ladies and gentlemen?
