From the WWE Rumor mill: New number one contender for Universal title to be determined soon

The top contender for Brock Lesnar’s title will be determined soon.

What’s the story?

According to cagesideseats.com, the new number one contender for the WWE Universal title will be determined either tonight or next week on Raw. Whosoever emerges the number one contender will square off against Brock Lesnar at the oddly-named Great Balls of Fire PPV.

In case you didn’t know...

At Wrestlemania 33, Lesnar defeated Goldberg in a brutal encounter and became the new WWE Universal champion. Thereafter, he appeared on RAW and had a showdown with Braun Strowman.

This set the stage for a potential match between the two in the near future. Interestingly, after his appearance on Raw, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ went on a hiatus. On the other hand, Strowman turned his attention to Roman Reigns and destroyed him at Payback.

However, as luck would have it, ‘The Monster Among Men’ picked up an injury at Payback. Needless to say, this put the rumoured Strowman-Lesnar clash in jeopardy.

The heart of the matter

Earlier this week, the WWE had an emergency meeting regarding the fate of the Universal title as well as their plans for Lesnar. According to Dave Meltzer, the higher ups do have a plan in mind. As such, these rumours may turn out to be true.

It must also be mentioned here that if Strowman’s injury isn’t too serious, he will most probably take part in a number one contender's match soon and emerge the victor. However, if that isn’t the case, the WWE will have to come up with an alternate plan and that too on short notice.

What’s next?

We’ll have to wait for tonight’s episode of Raw in order to find out if these rumours are true. Either way, we can expect an update on Strowman’s condition, tonight.

Author’s take

Like I mentioned previously, the Lesnar- Strowman match is bound to be an absolute slobber knocker. Moreover, it could help Strowman consolidate his position as one of the top stars on Raw. As such, I hope that the former Wyatt family member recovers from his injuries in time for the Great Balls of Fire PPV and puts on a solid match.
