At WWE RAW on January 3, 2022, a match that the WWE Universe had been craving to see for years was finally announced: Brock Lesnar vs. Bobby Lashley.
It was confirmed that Brock Lesnar would face Bobby Lashley at the upcoming Royal Rumble event. To add more grandure to the one-on-one match-up, the WWE Championship will also be on the line.
The clash between the two titans will be their first-ever battle solely against each other.
The first time they ever stepped into the ring in the same match was at the WWE Day 1 Premium Live Event. The Fatal 5-Way match, also involving Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens and WWE Champion Big E, saw Brock Lesnar walk away with the title by pinning the reigning champion.
The Royal Rumble match-up came as a surprise because Brock Lesnar is currently in the midst of a feud with Universal Champion Roman Reigns. He was set to face The Tribal Chief one-on-one for the title at WWE Day 1. Reigns contracted COVID-19 over the holiday season, meaning WWE had to reshuffle their deck.
What that means going forward for the Lesnar-Reigns feud remains to be seen. As for now, fans can all revel in the fact that a dream match for the ages will finally be happening in a matter of days.
That being said, let's take a look at five reasons why Brock Lesnar vs. Bobby Lashley has been years in the making.
#5. Bobby Lashley has been wanting the match against Brock Lesnar for a long time
It's no secret that All Mighty Bobby Lashley has been patiently waiting to get his hands on Brock Lesnar.
In July 2019, Lashley tweeted out a teaser on his Twitter page indicating his intentions to someday face The Beast Incarnate. The former WWE Champion spoke on The Rich Eisen Show earlier this year about the prospects of facing Lesnar:
"I’m prepared, I’m ready. Brock and his people, whenever they think that it’s necessary, whenever they think it’s a big enough deal, then I think that they will go and step up, and I think at that point it’ll happen. Right now, my loyalty is to WWE, but I’m a fighter, and I’ve been a fighter my entire life. So, I don’t care where it is, I just think it needs to happen for the fans. Bobby Lashley has now finally got his wish, and he will no doubt be relishing every second leading up to the big fight.
#4. Brock Lesnar and Bobby Lashley are two of WWE's best heavyweights in the modern era
Brock Lesnar vs. Bobby Lashley was certainly a match the WWE Universe didn't want to pass by without ever happening.
Looking at WWE's roster over the last few years or so, it's clear to see why. Both men are by far two of the best heavyweights the company has had under contract in recent memory. Both men not only wield raw strength, but also immense agility and technical ability. It would have been foolish not to let the two behemoths tear it up in the ring at least once.
There's no denying a match of this caliber is WrestleMania worthy. We are certainly in for a treat at the Royal Rumble if the company allows them to go all out.
#3. Bobby Lashley was promised a blockbuster match with Brock Lesnar when he returned in 2018
As always with WWE, the card is subject to change. That's exactly what happened when Bobby Lashley returned to WWE in 2018.
Lashley had been away from Vince McMahon's promotion for a number of years, but was convinced to eventually return. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reported that when he re-signed, Lashley was promised a match with Brock Lesnar.
However, the match never materialized, until now. The promise that was made four years ago will now be fulfilled and Bobby Lashley will get his wish.
#2. Bobby Lashley and Brock Lesnar both have MMA backgrounds
Of course, outside of the world of WWE, there are places competitors can legitimately go and fight. Brock Lesnar and Bobby Lashley did just that in Mixed Martial Arts.
Lesnar wound up with Dana White at UFC, whilst Lashley fought with Bellator and Strikeforce. Neither crossed paths during their MMA ventures, but it does add another intriguing layer to their upcoming match.
There has always been a sense and aura of legitimacy that surrounds Brock Lesnar's matches in particular. You just never know what's going to happen. Adding a fighter who is similar to Lesnar, in this case Bobby Lashley, then who knows what will go down when they collide.
#1. The WWE Universe has been fantasy booking Brock Lesnar vs. Bobby Lashley ever since Lashley's debut
Ask any member of the WWE Universe which modern day dream match they'd love to see. Brock Lesnar vs. Bobby Lashley would be suggested by most as the number one choice.
In fact, it is a match fans have been clamoring to see ever since Bobby Lashley debuted in WWE back in 2005. Fans compared Lashley to Lesnar due to his size and powerhouse abilities, with many tipping him to become the next big thing.
Things didn't quite work out initially, but he has since returned and climbed to the summit of WWE. With that, the WWE Universe will now finally get the ultimate dream match that has been talked about for 12 years.
