Opinion: Drew McIntyre possibly in line for a big push

At SummerSlam, Roman Reigns finally won the WWE Universal Championship from Brock Lesnar. It wasn’t easy for Roman Reigns, as it took him months to get the better of Brock after distraction from Braun Strowman to win the title. This ended Lesnar’s 504 day Universal Title reign, a historic achievement for The Beast.

At Money in the Bank 2018, Braun Strowman won the Money in the Bank ladder match by defeating Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Rusev, Kofi Kingston, Bobby Roode, The Miz, and Samoa Joe. This allows The Monster Among Men a title match whenever and wherever he pleases.

Since then Strowman has tried to cash in twice, only to be attacked before the match could begin. At first, he tried to do so at SummerSlam during Reigns’ and Lesnar's Universal Championship match, but was attacked by Lesnar before he could cash in the briefcase, and the distraction allowed Roman Reigns to take the title off The Beast.

On the August 20 edition of RAW, Strowman again tried to cash-in after Roman Reigns’ match with Finn Balor, but was attacked by Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose.

Braun Strowman has now challenged The Big Dog to a match for the Universal Championship at Hell In a Cell, scheduled to take place on September 16 2018. Last week on RAW, Strowman turned heel and was helped by Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre to take down The Shield.

This alliance of Strowman, Ziggler, and McIntyre is going to run for a few weeks, as it can be safely assumed that the latter two will have something to do with Reigns’ title defense against Strowman. The Shield is also advertised for a match against the three men at WWE’s Super Show-Down which will be held in Australia on October 6.

Keeping these points in mind, it seems like earlier plans of Drew McIntyre turning on Ziggler have been shelved for now. It is more probable that somewhere down the line, after the WWE Super Show-Down, McIntyre will be involved in a feud with Braun Strowman, eventually becoming the number 1 contender for the Universal Championship.

McIntyre currently seems to be one of the fittest and most powerful men on the RAW roster, and it’d be easier for the WWE to sell his victory over Braun Strowman (with Ziggler’s help of course) than with anyone else.

The former WWE Intercontinental and NXT Champion may not be able to defeat Roman Reigns at first, because WWE has been trying to establish Reigns as the face of the company since 2014, and he will get a lengthy title reign. However, it will help give McIntyre a major push and establish him among the top guys of WWE.

The WWE has been portraying The Big Dog as a babyface for a long time. Since McIntyre is already playing a villainous character, the heel would be a good choice.
