You can't always get what you want. Unfortunately for The WWE Universe, they had to find that out the hard way when the company announced Monday Night that Rey Mysterio will be taking on Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series. While the title match will be an interesting one to watch play out, it's still not The Fiend vs Brock Lesnar dream match may fans were hoping for.
With that stated and the brilliant build up to the dream match between Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair, and Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 35 in mind, it absolutely makes sense that the company would want to hold off on the bout for the time being. Holding off on the match causes fans to want to see it even more, which WWE is sure to capitalize on.
Sure, WWE could have given fans exactly what they wanted at Survivor Series and gone ahead with The Fiend vs Brock Lesnar, but it would have surely come at the expense of one of the Superstars' momentum. Coming off of Crown Jewel less than one week ago, WWE would have had the bare minimum amount of time to build toward the match and that would have been a difficult obstacle to overcome.
The Fiend vs Brock Lesnar sounds absolutely delicious on paper and a great way to see how the company would deal with the sharp contrast between characters, but it would be meaningless without a great story. Furthermore, the company wouldn't be able to capitalize on the build up, which would make it difficult to get fans legitimately invested in what could be a WrestleMania caliber feud.
Maybe Becky Lynch vs Ronda Rousey at last year's Survivor Series would have been a great match, especially with how the company was booking the two at the time, but it didn't have the build that it needed. Luckily, WWE then spent the next five months building to a super feud that ended up being the main event of WrestleMania 35.
If it wasn't for things like the original dream match not happening, Becky Lynch winning the Royal Rumble, and Charlotte Flair later being inserted into the match, the result wouldn't have been nearly as satisfying. That's not to say it wouldn't have been a great match, but it wouldn't have been the thrill ride that fans were inevitably taken on.
If nothing else, holding off on this match until the Royal Rumble or WrestleMania 36 gives the company a chance to capitalize on fan interest and build up to the bout with a fantastic story. A slow build also keeps fans engaged every step of the way, as most would be anticipating what comes next.
In the end, putting off the match was a brilliant idea and is only going to make fans want to see it that much more. It even saves both Superstars from having to take a pivotal loss that may halt momentum, and also prevents the company from trying to book a questionable finish to please fans, which has been hit or miss as of late.
Mark my words: WWE will get this dream match, just not right now!
