Ranking every McMahon WrestleMania singles match from worst to best

Vince McMahon has a pretty interesting history at WrestleMania
Vince McMahon has a pretty interesting history at WrestleMania

In case you did not know, Vince McMahon created WrestleMania. The 'Showcase of the Immortals' was the catalyst to WWE becoming a global phenomenon and it has only grown in stature and significance. For all that, we have the chairman to thank.

But despite creating the entire event, McMahon has failed to win a single match at WrestleMania. He wrestled on four occasions, all in No Disqualification circumstances, and lost each time. The boss even got his head shaved by Donald Trump at WrestleMania 23. Talk about being embarrassed on your own platform.

Shane McMahon, on the other hand, has a better 'Mania record, winning over half of his matches at the 'Grandest Stage of Them All'.

There have been eight singles matches at WrestleMania involving a McMahon, not including Shane's tag team victory alongside Daniel Bryan in the latter's in-ring return at 'Mania 34.

The quality of each match featuring either Vince or Shane varies from unwatchable to exciting, despite neither of them being actual wrestlers. It is pretty fascinating.

Here is every one-on-one match featuring a McMahon, at WrestleMania, ranked from worst to best.

#8 Vince McMahon vs Bret Hart (WrestleMania 26)

Too little, too late?
Too little, too late?

This match was "13 years in the making", being promoted as one of the main matches on the WrestleMania card in 2010. By then, there was not much heat left from the Montreal Screwjob, for Bret Hart and Vince McMahon to capitalize on. The water had gone under the bridge and the match seemed pointless, considering where things stood.

Also, the Hitman's inability to engage physically meant that we got 11 minutes of him beating down the chairman of WWE in a dull one-sided affair, with the entire Hart family watching. The concept of a Hart vs McMahon match was a sound one and could have been really exciting a few years earlier, but this was just painful to watch.

#7 Shane McMahon vs The Undertaker (WrestleMania 32)

The ultimate WrestleMania panic match
The ultimate WrestleMania panic match

After several main event stars were ruled out of WrestleMania 32 due to injury, The Undertaker was left without a clear opponent and WWE went into panic mode. Without John Cena or Sting, Shane McMahon stepped up to take on the Deadman inside Hell in a Cell. While his return to the company was exciting, the storyline was a mess. There were more questions than answers, leaving fans dissatisfied at the 'Taker vs Shane O'Mac feud.

With enough bells and whistles to it, the match had the potential to be something really special. But nothing happened and the two had a plodding brawl, all leading up to one major spot. Shane's leap of fate from the top of the Cell was incredible, but it takes more than one single moment to make a match good. This match was simply mediocre.

#6 Shane McMahon vs X-Pac (WrestleMania 15)

This is the only title match on this list.
This is the only title match on this list

Shane McMahon has held championship gold in WWE, even beyond his 'Best in the World' trophy. He was the European Champion in 1999, defending the title against X-Pac in a surprisingly entertaining match. Shane's in-ring limitations were hidden rather than exposed, leading to a solid bout which showcased the chemistry between both men.

The story told was pretty crisp and the chairman's son even retained his title thanks to interference from Triple H and Chyna. X-Pac must be credited over here, putting on a vastly underrated 'Mania title match against a non-wrestler. It was one of the highlights of a pretty lacklustre WrestleMania. A good showing from Shane O'Mac in his first WrestleMania match.

#5 Vince McMahon vs Hulk Hogan (WrestleMania 19)

A wild brawl
A wild brawl

Nobody would have expected a match between Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon to be even remotely entertaining. However, the boss and his first big draw pulled out all the stops. The pair's street fight was as entertaining as it was violent. It was a true spectacle on a card that was not short on them.

There was a lot of blood loss for both men, as we saw table spots, interference and a classic WrestleMania-sized hulk-up. However, the most memorable moment of this match came in the form of a psychotic smile from Mr McMahon, with blood on his face. That great facial expression encapsulated the moment of carnage perfectly.

#4 Shane McMahon vs The Miz (WrestleMania 35)

The beginning of the end of Miz's babyface credibility
The beginning of the end of Miz's babyface credibility

The story told between Shane McMahon and The Miz leading into WrestleMania 35 was pretty great, with the chairman's son playing a villain for the first time in over a decade. After he and Miz shared a feel-good, albeit short, tag team run, the two clashed in a wildly entertaining Falls Count Anywhere match. The Miz's father will forever be immortalized thanks to his ridiculous fighting pose when Shane threatened to beat him up.

While that ordeal stalled the bout for a bit, before Miz brought the pace back up and gave Shane one hell of a beating. However, he would lose this match following a massive superplex from the top of a 15-foot camera platform. The chairman's son churned out a fluke victory, which was fine. But since then, The Miz started to lose all of his babyface credibility. This was one of the top matches on a stacked WrestleMania.

#3 Vince McMahon vs Shane McMahon (WrestleMania 17)

The pinnacle of McMahon family drama in WWE
The pinnacle of McMahon family drama in WWE

What is better than having one McMahon in a WrestleMania match? Two McMahons in a WrestleMania match! In all seriousness though, the soap opera storyline between Vince McMahon and Shane McMahon was extremely hot and compelling. This was the absolute peak of the McMahon family saga. Father and son battled it out in a brutal street fight, with mother and daughter at ringside.

The wrestling was average, but what made this match was the story that was told in the lead-up and on the night itself. Where else would you hear over 65,000 people go absolutely mental for a 50-year-old woman standing up?

Linda McMahon rising from her wheelchair garnered a spectacular pop, as she helped Shane defeat the evil head of the company, and their family. This was a sports entertainment spectacle of the finest order.

#2 Vince McMahon vs Shawn Michaels (WrestleMania 22)

Props to Vince for taking such a devastating spot
Props to Vince for taking such a devastating spot

While the drama of the Vince vs Shane match was through the roof, Shawn Michaels carried his boss to a pretty good match over here. This was another entertaining brawl involving Vince McMahon at WrestleMania, possibly his best.

This match was not short of a story though, with a bunch of outsiders interfering at the aid of the chairman. Among them was Shane O'Mac himself, five years after besting his dad at the 'Showcase of the Immortals'.

The Heart Break Kid overcame all the interference, laying out Vince in the most satisfying way. He was left helpless, with a trash can over his entire upper body, as Michaels hit a Showstopper Elbow from a pretty tall ladder and sent Mr McMahon through a table.

One Sweet Chin Music, later put the boss out of his misery, ending what was his finest WrestleMania match. No surprise that it came against Mr WrestleMania himself.

#1 Shane McMahon vs AJ Styles (WrestleMania 33)

What a match!
What a match!

The pinnacle of the McMahon family's WrestleMania back catalogue, surprisingly came in a standard singles match. When it was becoming known that AJ Styles would face Shane McMahon at WrestleMania 33, the WWE Universe was not happy. They wanted AJ to have a better match, against someone "on his level". However, at 'Mania, the Phenomenal One proved that anyone who steps into the ring with him automatically reaches his level.

Styles and Shane opened the main card at the Citrus Bowl, completely stealing the show. The story of the match was nowhere near as meaty as earlier McMahon WrestleMania spectacles, but the action was leagues above any of them. The then-commissioner of SmackDown busted out some impressive moves, including his signature trash can-assisted Coast-to-Coast dropkick, after a long referee bump.

Some of the sequences and counters from both men were really smooth, like the Phenomenal Forearm into the Triangle Choke, into the Styles Clash. In the end, Shane made a couple of high-risk choices, and a failed Shooting Star Press sealed his fate, as AJ Styles picked up a pretty, well, phenomenal victory. This match was the best one of the entire show and was so good, that Styles had to turn face immediately afterwards.

Whether or not we see another WrestleMania match involving a McMahon, it is unlikely that anything will ever top this masterclass from AJ Styles and Shane McMahon.
