WWE Rumours: Possible feuds for SmackDown Live going into 2017 revealed

We may see John Cena vs AJ Styles all over again

The latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter has provided some insight into WWE’s plans for the feuds that will dominate proceedings on SmackDown Live heading into the new year.

First and foremost on the list will be a WWE World title feud between a returning John Cena and current champion AJ Styles. Cena, a 15-time champion in the WWE, is likely to be chasing Ric Flair’s record of 16 championship reigns by challenging Styles for the title.

‘The Cenation Leader’ was last seen in action at the No Mercy pay-per-view earlier this year where he competed in a triple threat WWE World Championship match against ‘The Phenomenal One’ and ‘The Lunatic Fringe’.

Styles won the match by pinning Cena after it was restarted due to both of the champion’s opponents making him submit.

As per a recent update from the WWE, John Cena is scheduled to return at a live event on 26th December and is then likely to make regular appearances on SmackDown Live every week. It is during this time that the feud between him and ‘The Champ That Runs The Camp’ will possibly materialise.

The Intercontinental title will also see a new feud between champion The Miz and Dean Ambrose, the seeds for which have already been sown on the latest episode of the blue brand’s show.

James Ellsworth, who cost Ambrose a championship win over ‘The Awesome One’ after doing the same in his match against AJ Styles at TLC, is also set to be involved in the feud.

If this development is indeed true, it could serve well to provide greater relevance to the Intercontinental Championship despite its mid-card status over the past few years.

The feud between new SmackDown Women’s champion Alexa Bliss and Becky Lynch is also likely to continue over the next few weeks as the latter will surely be getting her rematch. There are also chances of the WWE stretching the rivalry between ‘The Lass Kicker’ and Bliss until the Royal Rumble.
