Seth Rollins: Top 5 moments as a babyface

The rise of 'The KingSlayer'
The rise of 'The KingSlayer'

Seth Rollins has been one of the mainstays of the WWE for almost a decade now. He started off as a member of The Shield faction before going solo and becoming one of the biggest names in the industry.

In his quest to become the top star of the brand, he has had polarizing gimmick changes that he has pulled off with aplomb. Rollins even replaced John Cena as the face of the brand and he was backed by none other than Triple H and the authorities themselves.

But, nothing in WWE is ever permanent, and it all began with his mentor, Triple H, turning his back on Seth Rollins to hand the Universal Championship to Kevin Owens. And then, almost three years later, ironically, it is once again Kevin Owens who had been a catalyst for the change in character for Seth Rollins. In an episode of RAW, Rollins completely turned heel once again as he allied himself with Akam and Rezar of the AOP to assault Owens. Rollins would then cut one of his best promos in months, blurring the lines between reality and entertainment, blaming the fans for what he had just done.

Since turning babyface in late 2016, Rollins has accomplished a lot in his career. He has won singles and tag team titles during his time as a bad guy. 'The Architect' did some of his best in-ring work as the Intercontinental Champion in 2018, putting on great matches every single week. He was even reunited with Shield buddies Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose three times. Rollins won the 2019 Men's Royal Rumble Match and has main-events with more pay-per-views than anyone in the company in 2019.

Although there has been a lot of criticism thrown at 'The Architect,' Rollins did have a solid run as a good guy. As Rollins turns a new leaf in the evolution of his character, here are his top 5 babyface moments.

#5 Slaying 'The King of Kings' to become 'The Kingslayer'

As mentioned above, Seth Rollins' babyface turn started on the night Triple H turned on him. Following Finn Balor relinquishing the Universal Championship due to an injury, a Fatal 4-Way Elimination Match was set between Rollins, Roman Reigns, Kevin Owens and Big Cass to be crowned the next champion. The final minutes of the match saw 'The Game' storm out of the crowd and Pedigree Reigns, allowing Rollins to cover 'The Big Dog' and eliminate him from the match. With Rollins and Owens the last two stars remaining, it seemed like Triple H would Pedigree Owens to give Rollins the win, but in a shocking turn of events, 'The King of Kings' would turn on his protege. This allowed Owens to capitalize and pin Rollins to become the new Universal Champion.

This would start a story arc where Rollins would try to redeem himself and become a crowd favorite. Rollins would unsuccessfully challenge Owens for the Universal Championship on numerous occasions. Triple H cost Rollins a spot in Royal Rumble. Rollins would appear at NXT Takeover: San Antonio, challenging 'The Game' to face him like a man. Rollins was then attacked by Samoa Joe on the RAW after Royal Rumble 2017, and suffered an injury during the beatdown, putting his status for WrestleMania 33 in jeopardy.

Following weeks of torment, both verbal and physical, at the hands of 'The Game,' Rollins would get his hands on his former mentor at WrestleMania 33 in a non-sanctioned match. 'The Architect' would beat 'The Game' after hitting him with a Pedigree, thus completing his road to redemption. Inspired by Jamie Lannister of Game of Thrones, Rollins would re-christen himself as 'The Kingslayer.'

#4 Re-uniting with Dean Ambrose

Following his win over 'The Game' at WrestleMania 33, Rollins would struggle to find his footing as a babyface on Monday Night. Despite being beloved by the WWE Universe, Rollins' feud with Samoa Joe and Bray Wyatt didn't click in a big way and 'The Architect' was reduced to being just another good guy on the Red Brand. It wasn't until he crossed paths with an old friend-turned-foe that Rollins would truly come out of his shell as a good guy.

It began with Dean Ambrose saving Rollins from a beatdown by The Miztourage. In the weeks following, there were subtle teases of the duo potentially getting back together, only for either one of them back out at the last minute. The slow-build combined with the anticipation of seeing them join forces once again is what made the Ambrose-Rollins reunion one of the best stories WWE has told in recent memory.

Rollins and Ambrose have always had great chemistry and it shined through during this storyline. When the duo finally bumped their fist Shield style on the go-home show for SummerSlam 2017, they received one of the loudest pops of the year. Rollins and Ambrose would win the RAW Tag Team Championship from Sheamus and Cesaro at SummerSlam and would dominate the Red Brand's Tag Team Division for the next two months before dropping the belts back to The Bar just before Survivor Series.

#3 The entire Intercontinental Championship run

Rollins was a great IC Champion

It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Seth Rollins was one of the best Intercontinental Champions of the past decade. 'The Kingslayer' defeated Finn Balor and The Miz in the opening match of WrestleMania 34 to capture the prestigious title and in the process become a Grand Slam Champion. Much like his predecessor The Miz, Rollins would elevate the IC Title. With Brock Lesnar being the absentee champion on RAW, 'The Architect' would hold the fort and carry the mantle of being the top champion on Monday Nights for the majority of 2018.

Not only did Rollins have the best matches every single week, but he also elevated his opponents. The biggest example of this was Dolph Ziggler, who had a lengthy feud with Rollins over the IC Title. Ziggler was someone who had fallen off the radar, but the feud against Rollins helped revitalize his career. The duo would have a series of classic matches during the Summer of 2018.

The Intercontinental Championship and Rollins' performance inside the squared circle made him the most beloved male Superstar on Monday Nights. Rollins' connection with the fans and his solid Reigns as IC Champ would ultimately be the catalyst for his ascent to the main-event scene.

#2 Running the Gauntlet

Following Ambrose's injury in December 2017, Rollins found himself in hot water. A brief run as the RAW Tag Team Champion alongside Jason Jordan and 'The Architect' was back to square one. Unsure of what the future would hold, Rollins inserted himself in the Men's Elimination Chamber Match with the winner guaranteed a shot at the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 34.

A 7-Man Gauntlet Match was set for the 2018 Elimination Chamber RAW go-home show. The match began with Rollins facing off against his Shield Brethren Roman Reigns in a solid singles match. The duo's impeccable in-ring chemistry was on display during the match, which ended when Rollins rolled Reigns up for a three-count. The match against Reigns was just an appetizer before what was to come next, a spectacular 30-minute match against John Cena.

Cena and Rollins tore the house down in a classic back and forth with multiple false finishes. The Cenation Leader would finally fall to a Curb Stomp by Rollins. Rollins was eventually eliminated by Elias, but his hour-long performance in the match earned him rave reviews from both fans and critics. Rollins had re-established himself as the company's workhorse and his star-making performance in the match propelled him to the IC Title at WrestleMania 34.

#1 Defeating Brock Lesnar twice in 2019

One of the most dominant champions in the company's history, Brock Lesnar is the last of his breed. A former NCAA champion, Lesnar would become one of the biggest draws in MMA during his time in the UFC. Lesnar's aura and in-ring IQ are rarely seen in Superstars of this current generation. Lesnar brings an aura of unpredictability to his matches which makes them all the more exciting to watch. Brock Lesnar rarely ever loses in WWE

On the RAW after Royal Rumble 2019, Rollins would officially challenge Lesnar for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 35. Lesnar would lay Rollins out with a flurry of F5s, after a brief face-off between the duo. Rollins and Lesnar opened WrestleMania 35 in what seemed like a one-sided beatdown.

Before the bell even rang, Lesnar would attack Rollins and proceeded to beat down 'The Architect.' A couple of German Suplexes and F5s later, Lesnar was firmly in control of the match. As the bell rang, Lesnar picked up Rollins for an F5, but Rollins escaped, pushing 'The Beast' into the referee. Rollins would then low-blow Lesnar, while the referee was distracted and hit him with a Superkick and three consecutive Curb Stomps to win the Universal Championship. While the match wasn't anything special, the way it was laid out and the execution of it was perfect for Seth Rollins.

Lesnar would regain the Red Belt from Rollins after cashing his MITB contract at Extreme Rules. The duo would clash once again, this time in the main event of SummerSlam. Rollins and Lesnar would once again shock the WWE Universe by putting on one of the best matches of 2019. Rollins would pin Lesnar clean to become a two-time Universal Champion. This win also meant that Rollins joined an elite group of superstars who have beaten Lesnar twice, with the other two victors being WWE Hall of Famers Kurt Angle and Goldberg.

Even though Rollins is currently playing the 'Messiah' Gimmick from a heel standpoint, he has had some of his best moments as a fan favourite.
