SmackDown on FOX: 3 Reasons why Brock Lesnar should not have squashed Kofi Kingston in under 10 seconds

SmackDown premiered on FOX tonight, and the show ended with a new champion in the form of Brock Lesnar. Following the match against Kingston, The Beast was confronted by Cain Velasquez, who handed him a beating and forced The Beast to run out of the ring.

The two men have history, as Velasquez beat Lesnar to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship. The word ‘beat’ is an understatement, since Velasquez decimated The Beast, and it seems as though their feud from UFC is set to be continued here.

The moment Lesnar was announced to take on Kofi Kingston for the WWE Title, almost everyone knew that Kingston’s time was up. The New Day member had a great run with the title, but he had lost the momentum over the last couple of months and it was perhaps time for a change.

The sad bit, however, was the way he lost the title, as Brock Lesnar simply F5’d him once and pinned him for a three count – all in under 10 seconds. And here are 3 reasons why it shouldn’t have happened…

#3 Character work undone

All the good work undone
All the good work undone

After Kofi Kingston won the title at WrestleMania earlier this year, he was booked as a strong champion. He was actually made to look unbeatable in his initial days as the champion, and his reign was among the strongest in the company in recent history.

He went on to successfully defend his title against Kevin Owens, Dolph Ziggler, Samoa Joe and Randy Orton, with the common theme in his matches being that he always got up after falling down.

Kingston’s entire title reign was based on him getting back up after being pushed down. He survived the running knee from Daniel Bryan, a stunner from Kevin Owens, and an RKO from Orton, but the moment he was on the other end of an F5, he couldn’t get back up.

So was all the work done to his character as champion… undone?

#2 Completely disrespected and buried

Kingston was buried
Kingston was buried

As mentioned earlier, Kofi Kingston’s reign was getting stale and something needed changing. He had been a decent champion for over 6 months, and it was perhaps the best decision to take the title off him.

However let’s not forget that he is the WWE Champion. Holding that title means that he is at the top of the food chain. However, by having him lose to Brock Lesnar in under 10 seconds, they have buried him to the point from which he may never return.

While Kingston did claim that he wasn’t done with The Beast following his match, it is unlikely for him to get another shot at the title because of the way he lost. Prior to winning the title, he was being used a mid-card talent, and the way he lost to Lesnar pushes him straight back to that scene once again.

In future storylines, Kingston could now be taunted as the guy who lost the biggest title WWE has to offer in under 10 seconds, which is perhaps why he is not going to be in the main event scene for a long time to come – if not ever.

#1 Brock Lesnar

Not unbeatable
Not unbeatable

Brock Lesnar is The Beast. There is no doubt that putting the WWE Title on him increases its prestige as it is almost surely going to find itself in the main events of PPVs in the near future (which hadn’t been the case with Kofi Kingston).

However, having said that, Brock Lesnar is a part-timer, and the fact that a full-time wrestler, who is also the champion, lost to him like this does no good to the image of the company.

Secondly, Seth Rollins recently beat The Beast, cleanly and he did so while being injured in the storyline. Rollins wasn’t at 100% during his match against Lesnar at SummerSlam, and yet, he cleanly beat the former UFC Champion.

This was after he had beaten The Beast at WrestleMania. So it is safe to say that Lesnar, coming into this match, wasn’t the unbeatable Beast (and the way he ran out of the ring after being attacked by Velasquez is another testament). And while squashing Kingston like that may have put him back to that place, Kingston now looks very weak when compared to Rollins.

Had Kingston lost the match after a hard-fought battle, this wouldn’t have been the case.
