I know that a lot of people were disappointed when Brock Lesnar defeated Kofi Kingston in almost no time at all, on the debut of SmackDown on FOX. The match lasted mere seconds and nobody in the arena was happy.
And then suddenly out of nowhere, Cain Velasquez would show up and take Lesnar down with a flurry of fists. The newly crowned WWE Champion knew then that there was a new challenger who was hot on his trail, to dethrone him.
So, why does WWE want Cain Velasquez to take on Brock Lesnar in the days that follow? The answer should be quite clear to those who have been following the news, rumors, reports and opinion pieces on Sportskeeda over the past few days, ever since the rumors surfaced.
But in a nutshell, these are the main points...
#5 Velasquez is a natural when it comes to pro wrestling
Believe it or not, this is not Cain Velasquez's pro wrestling debut. Not only has he been a big fan of the sport, but he's also excelling at it at the highest level, working in AAA. I was on a conference call with Cody Rhodes not long ago, who spoke very highly of his abilities.
A lot of times, the biggest problem with a star arriving at a show like SmackDown is that they don't know how to take bumps, which is when a WWE star has to look weak. But Velasquez is a great professional wrestler already and he can jump directly into the mix and go on to have some good matches with Brock Lesnar.
To be quite honest, from the looks of it, Velasquez may put in more effort into his matches than Lesnar will, considering his track record. Oh well, let's hope for the very best!
#4 Velasquez and Lesnar have a history in the UFC
I will admit to having very limited knowledge of Mixed Martial Arts (preferring the fixed martial arts of sports entertainment) but what I do know is that Lesnar has been defeated by Velasquez in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. In fact, when Cain Velasquez defeated Lesnar, he won the title from him. And therefore, there is a readymade storyline waiting for these two men that can be settled in the ring.
We know that a lot of rivalries will never play out in the octagon. For example, we assumed that Daniel Cormier and Brock Lesnar would square off for a UFC fight, but that doesn't seem likely anymore. Maybe a lot of these fights can actually take place inside the squared circle.
I'm sure that Paul Heyman will be recapping UFC history in his promos, in the coming weeks speaking about Brock Lesnar's loss.
#3 Real sports feel
We saw Tyson Fury show up earlier in the night and have a showdown with one Braun Strowman, possibly setting up a big match. The buzzword for WWE has been 'real sports' ever since the news of SmackDown coming to FOX first surfaced.
The network wanted the presentation of the product to change on the blue brand and it seems like they're achieving the same with legitimate sports stars. It also leads to a more compelling storyline, where, for the first time, even the Beast Incarnate is on the back foot for a change.
I wonder if this will extend to all aspects of the show under Eric Bischoff, where the sports entertainment elements are gradually eliminated, one by one. I wouldn't necessarily be the biggest fan of this move, considering that many of us that watch WWE are not necessarily big sports fans.
But it is what it is, I guess.
#2 To elevate the value of the WWE Championship and also Cain Velasquez
Kofi Kingston's run as the WWE Champion was the stuff that dreams are made of, truth be told. WWE pretty much told the fans that they were listening and elevated him right to the top of SmackDown Live. One cannot even dispute that he was a great representative for the Championship, putting on some truly great matches.
However, deep in the back of our minds we always knew that Kofi Kingston was never going to be the face of the company as the WWE Champion. WWE also made this evident by never having the WWE Championship match go on last at a pay-per-view. In many cases, they even relegated it to before the Roman Reigns match in the card.
This is WWE's way of telling us that the Championship will be the featured attraction, going forward. It is also their way of elevating Velasquez, by inserting him straight into the mix again.
#1 Long term storyline to avenge the attack on Rey Mysterio and Dominick
Cain Velasquez wrestles in a mask outside the WWE and because he has embraced Lucha Libre culture, he has been portrayed as Rey Mysterio's friend. The fact of the matter is that Brock Lesnar assaulted Rey Mysterio and his son on WWE RAW, and he has hell to pay from the Luchador community.
To the credit of my comrade Daniel Wood, he did make this prediction when the assault first happened on RAW this week. Rumors of the arrival of Velasquez were doing the rounds, and he did say that Lesnar only attacked Mysterio to set up this match.
In any case, this is going to be the big storyline in the weeks and months to follow. Velasquez is a big-time MMA star and he could fulfill the void left by the missing Ronda Rousey.
