Throughout the years, the entire wrestling fanbase around the globe has certainly witnessed several much-awaited dream matches come true, however, over the course of these past few years, there have also been numerous matches which we can only imagine in our dreams and unfortunately for some of us, these matches will sadly never occur as well.
Almost every top name in the Pro Wrestling industry have almost collided against each other at one point or the another and with wrestling being so versatile in 2018, a crossover between two major promotions almost seems like an everyday thing now.
However, despite everything being said and done, at the end of the day, there are indeed numerous dream matches that we know for sure might never occur. For instance, a clash between The Rock and his blood-brother Roman Reigns is a heavily anticipated dream match, which has actually been talked about in the past, but, we almost know for sure that it is pretty unlikely to occur in the future.
With that being said, here are 10 biggest WWE matches that never happened:
#10 Bull Nakano vs Asuka
Prior to her WWE debut, Asuka FKA Kana was arguably one of the biggest and popular female superstars in Japan, where she most notably competed in the Japanese independent circuit and for notable promotions such as Reina Joshi Puroresu, Osaka Joshi Pro Wrestling and much more. However, following her WWE debut in 2015, Asuka eventually went on to establish herself as the most dominant female superstar in the entire company, despite only working under the NXT brand.
During her reign as NXT Women’s Champion, Asuka broke several records and destroyed every single competitor and challenger who was willing to step up to ‘The Empress of Tomorrow’ and in a pretty comprehensive manner, Asuka ultimately went on to mark her legacy in the WWE by holding on to the NXT Women’s Title for a total of 514 days.
A clash against former WWF Women’s Champion Bull Nakano was never really discussed with, other than the time when The Observer’s Dave Meltzer predicted on social media that Bull Nakano would eventually go on to end Asuka’s legendary undefeated streak in the WWE. But, a clash between two of Japan’s absolute best female superstars eventually never occurred and Nakano never really considered coming out of retirement after 2012.
#9 ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin vs Goldberg
During the initial days of the Monday Night Wars, both WWF and WCW had several top superstars in their ranks, however, both the respective companies had one particular superstar who stood head and shoulders above the rest of the roster in the form of ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin and Goldberg.
Both Austin and Goldberg were arguably two of the biggest and popular superstars for their respective companies during the Attitude Era and every time either man entered the arena, the crowd would go absolutely berserk. Initially, it seemed like a clash between Austin and Goldberg was next to impossible, but after WCW eventually went out of business, several top stars from the company eventually made the jump to the WWE, thus giving us hope of the fact that maybe a dream match between Austin and Goldberg was indeed on the cards.
However, following Austin’s retirement from in-ring competition after WrestleMania XIX, the closest we got to was ‘The Texas Rattlesnake’ refereeing the first match between Lesnar and Goldberg at WrestleMania 20.
#8 Hulk Hogan vs John Cena
Hulk Hogan and John Cena are arguably two of the biggest superstars from two different generations in WWE history and if WWE had ever booked the two men in a singles contest, then it would’ve definitely been historic and groundbreaking and would’ve also made the company a lot of money as well.
Back in 2006, WWE indeed had the opportunity of booking a potential dream match between Hulk Hogan and John Cena for SummerSlam, instead, Hogan went on to face-off against Randy Orton in what was his final WWE match, whereas, Cena competed in the main event of the evening later on in the night against Edge.
If Cena and Hogan had the opportunity of locking horns against each other then it would’ve replicated the Icon vs Icon match that took place between The Rock and Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X8.
#7 Hulk Hogan vs ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin
Following Hulk Hogan’s return to the WWE in 2002, ‘The Hulkster’ returned to the company as the leader of the New World Order in his Hollywood Hogan persona, alongside his fellow stablemates Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. Immediately after his comeback to the WWE, Hogan and the nWo went on to ignite a feud against two of WWE’s biggest stars at that point of time in the form of The Rock and his former arch-rival ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin.
Therefore, the cards were all lined-up in place for a mega showdown between Hogan and either The Rock and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, who were both having heated issues against the New World Order at that point of time. WWE eventually went ahead with an Icon vs Icon match between Rock and Hogan for ‘Mania X8 and despite an absolutely amazing contest between the two icons, the WWE Universe around the globe surely did miss out on a dream match between Austin and Hogan instead.
#5 ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin vs CM Punk
Prior to leaving the WWE in 2014, CM Punk cemented his place as the biggest anti-authority figures in WWE’s PG Era, thanks to his infamous pipebomb promo in the year 2011. However, Punk was certainly not the first-ever rebel in WWE history, as ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin cemented his place as arguably the biggest anti-authority figure in the entirety of WWE.
During the Attitude Era, ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin became one of the most popular superstars in the WWF and was hugely over with the WWE Universe due to his fearlessness of standing up Vince McMahon and his Corporation back in the day. Meanwhile, Punk eventually went on to change the entire landscape of the WWE during his 2011 pipebomb promo where ‘The Second City Saint’ initially began teasing a potential one-on-one match against Austin.
As noted during Punk’s pipebomb, the former 434-day WWE Champion was sporting a ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin T-shirt and the two men also had a backstage confrontation on a later episode of Monday Night Raw. However, a much-awaited in-ring clash never actually took place as Punk would eventually leave the WWE for UFC.
#4 Daniel Bryan vs Shawn Michaels
If ‘The Heart Break Kid’ Shawn Michaels ever came out of retirement, then there are several notable opponents against whom the WWE Hall of Famer could square-off against inside the squared circle, however, one of the rather more popular opponents against whom Michaels could’ve possibly shared the ring with is Daniel Bryan.
During Bryan’s initial rise in the WWE in 2013-14, ‘The American Dragon’ was busy feuding with The Authority in a storyline that also involved Shawn Michaels as well and the two men also seemingly had a few confrontations with each other that ultimately ended with Bryan brutally assaulting the already-retired HBK, after the latter cost Bryan a World Title match at Hell in a Cell. Booking a match between the two wouldn’t actually that tough considering the fact that the two men already had a pretty interesting backstory with each other, as Shawn was initially the one who taught Bryan how to wrestle in the first place.
However, a dream collision eventually did not happen as Michaels was already convinced of staying into retirement, with Bryan also going down the same route shortly afterward as well.
#3 Seth Rollins vs Shawn Michaels
After the break-up of The Shield in 2014, all three members of the faction broke out as singles competitors in the WWE, however, it was ‘The Architect’ Seth Rollins who broke out as the hottest singles star from The Shield and was eventually awarded the WWE Championship due to his outstanding in-ring performances.
While being in his first reign as World Champion, Seth Rollins portrayed the role of a cowardly heel who always preferred to retain his championship by hook or by crook, but that somehow did not reflect on his in-ring performances as ‘The Kingslayer’ gave his very best everytime he stepped inside the squared circle. Rollins’ outstanding in-ring performances eventually led to the comparison between him and WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels and some particular members of the WWE Universe were certainly craving for a dream singles match between the two men as well.
But, alas, that never happened and eventually, the closest we got to was both Rollins and Michaels cutting a heated promo on each other on an episode of Raw.
#2 AJ Styles vs Shawn Michaels
With Shawn Michaels making into this list for the fourth time, you probably have an idea by now of how amazing the former WWE World Champion was inside the ring and trust me, every time Michaels stepped inside the squared circle he always lived up to his hype and expectations and eventually went on to prove his worth, much like WWE Champion AJ Styles.
Over the years, both AJ Styles and Shawn Michaels developed a pretty strong reputation of being the best and the hardest worker in the Pro Wrestling business and ever since AJ made his much-anticipated jump to the WWE in 2016, fans have certainly been hoping to see ‘The Phenomenal One’ rub shoulders with the very best in the business.
One of the rather talked about dream matches was/still is, is a potential showdown between ‘The Phenomenal One’ AJ Styles and ‘The Showstopper’ Shawn Michaels. In 2017, Styles also teased a potential dream match against Michaels for the 2017 Royal Rumble PPV, however, the latter rather preferred to stay out of in-ring competition and it is pretty likely that both AJ and Michaels will be two of the greatest superstars to have never competed inside the squared circle.
#1 Sting vs The Undertaker
This one is by far the biggest WWE dream match to have never taken place and despite fans coming very close to witnessing a clash between the two legends, this dream match would eventually never go on to occur. In 2014, the biggest WCW homegrown superstar of all time, former WCW World Champion Sting finally made his much-awaited WWE debut after all these years and eventually became the biggest WCW superstar to make the jump to Vince McMahon’s company.
Following his debut at Survivor Series, 2014, Sting was initially booked into a feud against Authority leader Triple H at WrestleMania 31, however, fans were instead hoping for a match between the legendary Undertaker finally going toe-to-toe with Sting at The Grandest Stage of Them All.
But, unfortunately, the entire wrestling fanbase never really had the chance to witness two of the biggest icons share the ring with each other on the big stage, as Sting eventually announced his retirement from in-ring competition after losing his World Title match against Seth Rollins in 2015.
