The Twitter feud between Matt Riddle and Chris Jericho has grown personal in recent weeks.
The Twitter feud between Matt Riddle and Chris Jericho has grown personal in recent weeks.

Ah, the world wide web. A vast storehouse of information, some of it even accurate. Today people around the globe can connect more easily than ever. With no long distance fees to speak of, a wrestling fan in Guam can easily connect with his favorite wrestler wherever they happen to be in the world.

Social media powerhouse Twitter is always on, twenty four hours a day seven days per week. This accessibility is both a boon and a curse. After all, sometimes people can say things in the heat of the moment and regret it later.

This instant communication can lead to some ruffled feathers, and in some cases out and out hostility. When the parties involved are engaged in an industry which thrives upon 'smack talk,' the situation can grow even more exacerbated.

Pro Wrestlers can use social media to further story lines and angles. This is the intended use of the medium, as far as wrestling promoters are concerned, but sometimes the heat between pro wrestlers is legitimate and not a worked angle.

Here are fi of the most heated Twitter feuds in pro wrestling.

#1 Seth Rollins vs. Will Ospreay

Seth Rollins and Will Ospreay engaged in a heated exchange on Twitter recently. It was so heated, in fact, that new Raw head Paul Heyman got involved.
Seth Rollins and Will Ospreay engaged in a heated exchange on Twitter recently. It was so heated, in fact, that new Raw head Paul Heyman got involved.

Honestly, you'd think that Seth Rollins and Will Ospreay would make natural allies. Both men cut their teeth on the indie scene before signing with major companies.

For The Beastslayer that meant a stint in Ring of Honor before signing with WWE. Ospreay also did some time in ROH but he signed with New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Rollins has been successful in WWE, having held multiple titles including reigns as Universal Champion. Ospreay has held the IWGP Junior Heavyweight championship.

However, when Seth Rollins went onto Twitter to brag about WWE being the best wrestling on the planet, Ospreay fired back.

Ospreay definitely fired the first shot, but it should be pointed out that the IWGP Jr Champion didn't attack Rollins personally, just his position. But The Architect took things a little bit further.

Many fans and critics, as well as some wrestlers, believed that Rollins's condescending attitude went too far.

Things got even worse after Ospreay pointed out he'd wrestled more matches in the past year than Rollins. To this, The Architect replied with an even more contentious tweet.

Bragging about how much money you have is never a good look for anyone, and it seemed especially cruel coming from Seth to Ospreay, considering their similar backgrounds. Baron Corbin and Chris Jericho would become involved as well, and the whole thing made all parties involved look like they had very fragile egos indeed, especially Rollins who was the WWE Universal champion at the time.

Unsubstantiated rumors have it that Paul Heyman made a point to speak with Rollins about the twitter feud. While that's not a proven fact, what is known is that Rollins did offer an apology to Ospreay shortly afterward, which the Jr Champ accepted.

Winner: Will Ospreay

While there was some immaturity on all sides, the fact that Rollins was the face of the biggest pro wrestling company on the planet at the time of the feud makes him bare the brunt of the blame for it.

Rollins also apologized to Ospreay, meaning that he essentially waved the white flag. Props to The Beastslayer for finally doing the right thing.

#2 CM Punk vs. Chris Brown

Even though he hasn't wrestled much in years, CM Punk still manages to be in the center of the pro wrestling conversation. Rapper Chris Brown was embroiled in a feud with the former WWE Champion.
Even though he hasn't wrestled much in years, CM Punk still manages to be in the center of the pro wrestling conversation. Rapper Chris Brown was embroiled in a feud with the former WWE Champion.

Oddly, pro wrestling twitter feuds can sometimes involve non wrestlers, such as the case between CM Punk and Rapper Chris Brown.

CM Punk is no stranger to controversy. His Pipebomb promo basically changed the way that pro wrestling interviews and characters are developed and distributed. Punk has never been one to mince words on social media.

Chris Brown is a grammy winning recording artist who also is no stranger to controversy. Unlike Punk, however, Brown's infamy stems not from his controversial opinions but due to the domestic violence allegations leveled his way. Though Brown never was convicted, he also didn't deny that he struck then-girlfriend Rhianna while they were both in his car.

CM Punk decided to mouth off on the subject, in his typical idiom. Brown responded, though it should be noted he stopped short of accepting the challenge.

Brown also accused CM Punk of using steroids. As anyone who follows wrestling knows, CM Punk does not have the type of physique that someone who abuses steroids would have.

Punk came back with a video, in which he laid out in no uncertain terms what he thought of the recording artist.

(I want to make you feel) “as weak and as powerless, and scared and alone as any woman who has had the misfortune of knowing a sad, cowardly little boy such as yourself.”

Brown didn't have any comment, which effectively amounted to him throwing in the towel.

Winner: CM Punk.

CM Punk started the fight, and he finished it in his usual fashion.

#3 Nia Jax and Tye Dillinger (Shawn Spears)

Our next feud involves two people who are in the possible future legend category: Nia Jax and Tye Dillinger aka Shawn Spears.

Nia Jax is a member of the famous Anoa'i familiy, which includes her cousin The Rock and Rikishi Fatu. Her wrestling pedigree and dynasty opened a lot of doors for her, and any others that stood in her way the six foot tall Jax easily smashed through.

Tye Dillinger is a long time, off and on WWE employee who started on the ECW revival as Gavin Spears.

Though he was very over in NXT, his rise to the main roster didn't end so well and he requested his release. Dillinger now works for the AEW promotion.

During the period in which both were still employed by WWE, Nia Jax took exception to a tweet posted by the company.

Nia Jax took exception to the fact that all of hte featured women where white, and no women of color were represented despite strong showings by Jax herself, Kairi Sane, Ember Moon, and Asuka.

That probably should have been the end of it, with a new discussion on representation developing. However, Tye Dillinger showed his white privilege in his response.

Jax took the high road and didn't continue the feud, and with him no longer working for the WWE it would appear that it's over...for now.

Winner: Draw

Spears got the last word in tweets, but it would appear that Nia Jax had the last laugh as she is still employed by the company.

#4 Conor McGregor and Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns and Conor McGregor, both at the top of their respective industries.
Roman Reigns and Conor McGregor, both at the top of their respective industries.

The pro wrestling/MMA connection has rather deep roots. For one, early UFC star Ken Shamrock was featured prominently during WWE's Attitude Era.

Shamrock was a bonafide wrestler who mastered tricky moves like the hurricanrana, but was still considered a legit bad man due to his UFC past.

Then Brock Lesnar did the impossible and switched careers from the WWE to UFC. After a rocky start, he became the most bankable champion in the promotion's history. CM Punk also followed suit, albeit with less success.

This feud started when Conor McGregor had some nasty things to say about WWE stars in an interview.

For the most part, those WWE guys are p**sies, to be honest,They're messed up pu**ies, if you ask me.

When WWE fans took him to task for his bold statement, McGregor responded on Twitter.

Among the many who took exception to this statement was WWE Superstar and Top Guy in the company Roman Reigns.

Reigns then went on to say that McGregor would be better off on 205 Live than on RAW. The feud appears to be over for now, but you never know with a personage as mouthy as Connor is.

Winner: Roman Reigns

Conor McGregor should keep in mind that pro wrestlers trash talk for a living, and if he can't stand the heat he should stay out of the kitchen.

#5 Matt Riddle vs. Chris Jericho

Matt Riddle and Chris Jericho have engaged in a war of words.
Matt Riddle and Chris Jericho have engaged in a war of words.

Matt Riddle hasn't shied away from controversy. At the start of his career, he was on the Ultimate Fighter reality show, and though he failed to win the contest, he was awarded a UFC contract.

When Riddle was fired for testing positive for marijuana--on the shaky ground that the popular natural herb was somehow enhancing his performances--Riddle didn't act humble or beg for his job back. He simply switched to a new career: Pro wrestling.

Chris Jericho is a man of contrasts. At once he is a stalwart veteran and defender of pro wrestling, while also being one of its most vocal critics. When Riddle made some comments directed at 'former WCW wrestlers' like Jericho and Goldberg, The Ayatollah Of Rock And Rolla took exception and tweeted "Listen and learn kid."

Not to be outdone, Riddle responded with a video tweet, during which he threatened to put a beat down on Chris Jericho.

Chris Jericho responded in a typically witty and trollish fashion.

Winner: To be determined, but Jericho is ahead.

Matt Riddle hasn't had a good response to Jericho since, and we doubt that he will remain silent forever. However, Jericho has been playing this game for much longer, and so far has gotten the better of the King of Bros.
