At TLC, Randy Orton won against John Cena and unified his WWE Championship and Cena’s World Heavyweight Championship to become the first ever WWE World Heavyweight Champion. But, this is not the first time that the WWE fans witnessed the WWE and World Championship unification. As we travel back in time we will tale a look at the Top 5 Undisputed Champions in WWE history.

Honorable Mentions: Current Undisputed Champion, Randy Orton and Hulk Hogan.

5. The Rock

After returning to the newly named WWE in July 2002, The Rock became the WWE Undisputed Champion, and made (then) a record of seven WWE Championship wins by defeating the Champion, Undertaker and Kurt Angle in a Triple Threat match at Vengeance. He successfully defended it at Global Warning against Triple H and Brock Lesnar. Soon he got into a feud with Lesnar who defeated him at SummerSlam and became the new Undisputed Champion. He not only lost the Championship but also his record of being the youngest WWE Champion to Brock Lesnar.

4. Triple H

Triple H returned to the WWF in 2002 after an 8-month long injury lay-off. He won the 2002 Royal Rumble and challenged Chris Jericho for the Undisputed Championship at WrestleMania X8, where he defeated him to become the second Undisputed Champion in WWF history. He couldn’t hold the title for more than 35 days, losing it to “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan at Backlash who was helped by The Undertaker.

3. The Undertaker

1280px-Undertaker_prematchOn the same night of Backlash where Hogan became the new Undisputed Champion, the “American Bad Ass” Undertaker defeated Stone Cold to become the number one contender for the Championship, later helping Hogan to win the Championship (Taker was a heel at that time) and setting a match with him at Judgment Day. Shortly, these two got involved in a feud (as they both were opponents for Judgment Day) which also saw Hogan run a truck over Taker’s motorcycle. He defeated Hogan at Judgment Day and became a 4-time WWE Champion. His reign could have ended only one light later at Raw when Rob Van Dam defeated him for the Championship only to have Ric Flair restart the match. At Vengeance Taker lost his title to The Rock which brought an end to his 63-day long reign.

2. Brock Lesnar

heymanIn June 2002, Brock Lesnar won a shot at the Undisputed Championship at SummerSlam by winning the King of the Ring tournament where he defeated Rob Van Dam in the final match. After his feud with Van Dam, he started feuding with The Rock who was the Unified Champion at that time, the both wrestled for the Championship at SummerSlam and Lesnar won the match, becoming the youngest (25) WWE Champion ever till date, a record previously held by The Rock. During his 84-day long title reign the word “Undisputed” was dropped from the WWE Championship’s name as Eric Bischoff introduced the World Heavyweight Championship for Raw, after Lesnar’s title became exclusive to SmackDown on September 2, 2002, as per the Brand War storyline. After September 2, 2002 it was at TLC, that WWE brought back the Undisputed Championship.

1. Chris Jericho

jerichoAt Vengeance (2001) Jericho defeated The Rock for the WCW Championship (which was unbranded after the Invasion storyline ended at Survivor Series) and later that night he also defeated Stone Cold to win his WWF Championship and become the first ever Undisputed Champion in WWF’s history. He defended both the titles on different pay-per-views and successfully retained them against The Rock and Stone Cold. He lost the titles to Triple H at WrestleMania X8 which marked the end of WWF’s first ever Unified Championship reign that remained only 2 days short of a 100. Jericho’s 98-day Unified Championship reign is the longest in WWE’s history till date. A record which Randy Orton would like to break, but only time will tell if the “face” of the WWE achieves that feat.
