WrestleMania 35: 4 matches with poor storylines

The clocks are ticking and WrestleMania is fast approaching after we took a Fastlane to the event on The Road to WrestleMania.

As of current reports, there will be seventeen matches on the card, which could see a few important or fan-favorite matches fall on to the kick-off show. However, being on the kick-off show of the grandest event of the year is also a huge honor for many superstars.

The build for most of the matches has been going extremely well, with the plot for the WWE Championship thickening, the battle between Batista and Triple H becoming more fierce, and the Raw Women’s Championship match looking like a potential headliner.

Some matches, on the other hand, are suffering from non-development of crucial storylines due to the sheer amount of matches on the card. This might even see some championship matches suffer at the end of the event too.

Here we will look at 4 such matches which have no or bad storylines at the moment and could suffer from negative reactions at the end of the night.

#4 The United States Championship match

This one could be huge if built up properly

The United States Championship was once the most sought after championship in the WWE. The value of the championship had risen to such great heights that recently even wrestlers such as Randy Orton were competing for the title.

In the past few months, the title’s value has fizzled down just like that of the Raw Tag Team Championship and SmackDown Women’s Championship.

The reason has been Shinsuke Nakamura’s win, followed by few title defenses, which then saw Rusev win the title and soon lose Nakamura again, who lost it two days later to R-Truth.

Only after Samoa Joe won the title a couple of weeks back has the title’s value started to rise again.

However, WWE has quickly announced a match between Joe and Rey Mysterio for the title, taking out Andrade or any of the previous champions from the mix.

This has led to slow development of the storyline around the title which could have seen multiple superstars compete for it, especially those who held the title only a few months back making the angle and the storyline much more exciting.

#3 Kurt Angle's Farwell match

Kurt Angle vs Baron Corbin?
Kurt Angle vs Baron Corbin?

The Olympic Gold Medalist, five-time WWE Champion, WWE Heavyweight Champion, United States, and Intercontinental Champion, and multiple time Tag Team Champion will take on a one-time United States Champion in his final match.

Yes, that’s the booking that has been made to end Kurt Angle’s career on a ‘high’.

There is no reason to doubt Baron Corbin’s talent. However, he is still not a big enough star to fight Angle in his last match.

If WWE can’t find a legend to do the job, then even in their current roster they can find men like Rey Mysterio, Randy Orton, Bobby Roode, or Dean Ambrose who can probably do a better job.

If this match had taken place at Survivor Series 2018, then it would have been great as the timing and the build-up had been perfect then.

Announcing Corbin as Angle’s final challenger makes little sense as the story between them is stale now and both men have found new rivalries elsewhere.

Currently, this seems like the worst booked match on the card and we are hopeful that WWE will make some changes soon. But if they do make changes now, there is not much time to build enough hype around it.

#2 The SmackDown Women’s Championship match

The Empress still doesn't know who she'll face at WrestleMania
The Empress still doesn't know who she'll face at WrestleMania

What was arguably one of the topmost championships in WWE has been made almost nothing in the past three months or so.

When Charlotte Flair held the title, she made its value rise to new heights. Afterward, Becky Lynch won the title for the second time in her career and made it reach even greater heights. This made it go past the value of the WWE Championship on many occasions.

Since Asuka won the championship at Tables, Ladders, and Chairs, WWE seems to have disowned the title and the superstar. They have put The Empress of Tomorrow in mid-card feuds even while holding the top title, while other top women such as Becky Lynch and Charlotte have been thrown into feuds on Raw.

This is extremely sad for the superstar and the brand, as the title held more value even when Carmella held it.

Currently, there is no set match or rivalry for the champion, and a fatal four-way match between Sonya Deville, Mandy Rose, Carmella, and Naomi on the March 26, 2019 episode of SmackDown will get a SmackDown Women's Championship match at WrestleMania 35.

This means there will be little to no build for the match since WrestleMania will only be a couple of weeks away from the time a challenger is revealed. That is extremely saddening considering the talent which is holding the title, and the title itself.

Earlier reports suggested that Lacey Evans might get a shot for the title at WrestleMania, and if that is the case, then it will be worse as no one on the main roster has seen Evans compete except for the Royal Rumble match, and a new face in a title match at WrestleMania will make little sense.

#1 The Universal Championship match

The build was hotter during Royal Rumble than it is now

Seth Rollins set the WWE Universe on fire after winning the Royal Rumble, as fans were desperately waiting and praying for his victory.

The fans got what they want, and they want to see The Architect as the next Universal Champion. There is no reason to wonder why Rollins should win the biggest prize, as he has done everything in his WWE career that has been of a gold standard.

While Rollins was doing a good job subtly targeting Brock Lesnar before the Royal Rumble during his promos, the impact has slowly withered away.

This has been greatly affected by Brock Lesnar’s no-show at most of the shows after the Rumble, and even Paul Heyman is not delivering good promos as he used to.

What has affected the feud most is the return of Roman Reigns, and the news of Dean Ambrose’s departure, which has changed WWE’s focus from Rollins alone to the other two superstars and The Shield.

Instead of attacking The Beast or building up to his WrestleMania match, Rollins has been forced to compete against other superstars such as Drew McIntyre and Shelton Benjamin as he is currently the biggest star on the red brand and needs to keep the show rolling.

Keeping in mind that the Universal Championship match could headline the Showcase of Immortals, it is surprising how the development is being carried out.
