The backstory

Back in the mid-to-late 90s, Stone Cold turned from a generic heel to possibly the greatest Superstar in WWE history. Austin took the company to new heights and practically saved it from going bankrupt.

One of the major factors that helped Austin get over with the fans was his no-nonsense attitude and WWE's creative not being shackled by a PG rating, which allowed him to hurl profanities on live television. WWE had previously acknowledged that fans were getting tired of the same old storylines and wanted a more exciting and intriguing product, resulting in the birth of the Attitude Era.

Although this new creative direction went incredibly well with the new generation of fans, there was a bunch who didn't appreciate it one bit.

The Q&A Segment

A segment during a WWE show saw Stone Cold Steve Austin answering fan questions. The session was hosted by Todd Pettengill and Sunny. One caller didn't seem to be a fan of Austin's swearing. Here's how it went down -

Well, first of all, Stone Cold, I really like your style, the no-nonsense approach to wrestling. I think you could go far, except for one thing. What's with the swearing all the time? I think it kinda indicates a lack of creativity, a lack of imagination, and I think it'll hinder your future in the WWF.

This was Austin's response to the caller:

I think if you keep talking to me like that, if you were here in person I might hinder your life. The bottom line is I say whatever I want, when I want, how I want. As far as you liking my style, I've been around for seven long years. All of a sudden someone puts a microphone in front of my face and everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon. You all are a bunch of mosquitoes, and from now on, that's what I'll refer to you as - mosquitoes. You're trying to get on the arm of Steve Austin and suck the blood out, 'cause I'm red hot.

You might notice that Austin's incredible promo on the caller, Eva, didn't include a single bit of profanity. The Rattlesnake managed to go off on the caller without hurting her feelings.

The aftermath

The caller was obviously wrong in her concerns about Austin's verbal profanity hurting his success as he went on to become a megastar and is widely regarded by many as the greatest WWE Superstar of all time.
