WWE RAW: 3 Reasons why Baron Corbin becoming King of the Ring is good & 2 reasons why it is not

The new King?
The new King?

The WWE juggernaut continues to move as it ends a small cycle with the conclusion of the Clash of Champions pay-per-view. While the PPV itself may have been decent, the final act of The Fiend taking down WWE Universal Champion Seth Rollins was a very good way to end the show.

The return of Harper, too, generated some buzz as he helped Rowan defeat Roman Reigns in the only non-title match of the PPV. Now that Clash of Champions is done and dusted, the next cycle leads to Hell in a Cell, but before WWE brings out new storylines, there is something that needs to be taken care of first.

Tonight’s episode of RAW will see Baron Corbin take on Chad Gable in the finals of the King of the Ring tournament. The Lone Wolf seems to be the absolute favorite to win the crown and become King Corbin.

And like everything in life, this has both pros and cons, and here are 3 reasons why Baron Corbin becoming the King of the Ring is a good option, and 2 reasons why it isn’t…

#3 Why it is good: Corbin is a heel and will rub it in for a long period

Corbin has already begun his work
Corbin has already begun his work

It wasn’t really a long time ago when Baron Corbin faced Kurt Angle in the latter’s last ever in-ring match and defeated him at WrestleMania 35. Following that, Corbin made it a ritual to brag about how he defeated the Olympic Gold medalist in his farewell match every single time he appeared on TV.

So, imagine if he wins the King of the Ring and gets crowned as the King… there is not going to be an end to it. Corbin could religiously brag about being the best wrestler in the business, as he is the King, and he could have some interesting programs with up and coming babyfaces.

He could play this gimmick out for so long that it wouldn’t be surprising if he goes on with it until next year’s King of the Ring tournament (if there is one, that is).

#2 Why it is not good: Gable needs the push more than Corbin

The Ultimate Underdog
The Ultimate Underdog

Ever since the turn of the year, it seems as though the company have made an irreversible decision to push Baron Corbin. He was first chosen to become Kurt Angle’s last opponent at WrestleMania, and not only that, he beat the former World Champion.

After that, he became the number one contender for the WWE Universal Championship, and that feud with Seth Rollins went on for a prolonged period before the Beast Slayer shut him down at Extreme Rules.

And now, he is in the finals of the King of the Ring. As a result, it is safe to claim that the Lone Wolf has been given his fair share of momentum this year, and he doesn’t really need it as much as Chad Gable does.

Gable had been nonexistent for most of the year, but he finally found some limelight in this tournament. WWE also did a fine job in portraying him as the ultimate underdog by making other Superstars underestimate him due to his physical stature.

As a result, a fitting end to this story would be if Gable goes all the way and become the King of the Ring, as it would be the push that he needs to take his career to greater heights.

#2 Why it is good: Corbin is improving and getting over

He is slowly winning the fans over
He is slowly winning the fans over

Baron Corbin has been one of the most disliked Superstars in the WWE Universe. And for him, given that he is a heel, it is perfect. In general, the consensus was that he is not as good inside the ring and that there are many others who would do better if they were pushed.

Slowly and steadily, however, Corbin is turning the tide. Despite many attempts, WWE were failing to get him over with the fans, but in his recent Triple Threat match against Samoa Joe and Ricochet in the King of the Ring semifinals, fans broke out a ‘Baron Corbin, Corbin sucks’ chant.

Finally, it was happening – he was getting over as a heel with the fans.

His matches are no longer ‘boring’, as over the past few months – especially during his bouts against Seth Rollins – he has improved a lot in terms of in-ring ability.

In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to claim that Corbin put out some of his best matches in the King of the Ring tournament, which, in a poetic way, is the fruit of his hard work in the ring.

Not only does he look good inside the ring, he also make his opponent look amazing – and becoming the King would be like a present for all the hard work that he has put in.

#1 Why it isn’t good: Some other heel could have been pushed

A wonderful sight
A wonderful sight

If one looks at the past winners of the King of the Ring tournament, they would know that heels have won the tournament most of the time. And it makes sense, as the villains make better Kings because of their evil personas.

And this is where the question arises: couldn’t WWE have pushed some other heel instead of Corbin?

After all, he has already been given many chances this year, as mentioned earlier, so wasn’t it time for someone else to be given the push they needed? The likes of Drew McIntyre are dying for a push like this, and it was perhaps the perfect platform for WWE to push the Chosen One.

In fact, many thought that this was finally going to be McIntyre’s moment but once again, after a strong 2018, 2019 hasn’t been kind to him.

Corbin might be improving a lot, but there was a plethora of options to choose from for the role of an evil King, and Drew McIntyre was just one example in a roster that has the likes of Samoa Joe and Andrade.

#1 Why it is good: King Gable would be short-term

Gable not a long-term option
Gable not a long-term option

When WWE put both RAW and SmackDown Women’s Titles on the line for the main event of WrestleMania, they wanted to ensure that it was the biggest possible moment in the history of women’s wrestling.

And while it did work ‘in the moment’, the aftereffects became visible when Becky Lynch walked out of the Grandest Stage of Them All with two belts. Suddenly, there was a dearth of good storylines in the women’s division, and Lynch having both the belts meant that the options were limited.

With Gable as the King, there won’t be any long-term benefits in terms of building storylines as he won’t be going around bragging about being the King for weeks. If he wins the final, that moment itself will be the highest point of his King storyline, and there is little chance for it to get better after that.

There is an option for him to turn heel later to increase the shelf-life of his crown, but Gable being a villain is not something that would get him over with the fans right now, especially after his underdog portrayal for the entirety of the tournament.
