What's the story?

WWE franchise player John Cena took time off from the company to fulfil his non-WWE commitments after his feud with Roman Reigns and another appearance at Survivor Series.

Heading towards the new year, however, Cena is set to make a comeback to WWE as he is currently advertised for two WWE shows. Other than Monday Night RAW's Christmas Day broadcast, John Cena is also scheduled to appear on SmackDown's live event on the 30th of December.

In case you didn't know....

John Cena recently confirmed in an interview with Wrestletalk that he would no longer have a full-time performance schedule for WWE. He confessed to feeling his age and said that while he would remain connected with WWE, his future role with the company was not going to be the same. Cena was the face of WWE for the better part of the last decade, but now at 40 years of age, he said that he intended to focus on life outside WWE as well.

Cena's last two runs with the company had him involved in a feud with Roman Reigns, where he 'passed on the torch' to the younger competitor and an appearance on the SmackDown Live Survivor Series team in the five-on-five elimination match.

The heart of the matter

John Cena is advertised to appear on Monday Night RAW's Christmas Day broadcast which is set to take place in Chicago's Allstate Arena, as well as SmackDown Live's live event on the 30th of December in Tampa's Amalie Arena.

John Cena no longer works a full-time schedule for WWE and in his new role works as a free agent who can appear on either RAW or SmackDown Live despite the brand split. He recently appeared on Raw for his feud with Roman Reigns before switching back to SmackDown Live for the Survivor Series elimination tag match.

What's next?

John Cena is set to return to WWE for Christmas and New Year week on Raw's 25th December broadcast, and SmackDown Live's 30th December live event.

Author's take

John Cena was the face of the company for a lengthy period in WWE's recent past. His absence from regular programming will take time to get accustomed to as a WWE fan. At his age, he has to move on, however, and focus on his career outside WWE.
