What's the story?

John Cena is one of the icons of WWE, and is an important figure in the history of Vince McMahon's company. But, Cena recently revealed that he may not have become a 16-time World Champion in the WWE if things went differently as he said that he could have been fired by WWE, in a recent interview with Uproxx.

Cena likened his situation with Becky Lynch, who was in the lower mid-card in the women's division, before grabbing her opportunity and becoming one of the most important Superstars on the roster.

In case you didn't know...

At WrestleMania 34, Lynch was on the pre-show in the 20-woman WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal, which she did not even win.

But a year on, the Irish Lasskicker may well headline WrestleMania if WWE adds her back to the match between Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair.

The heart of the matter

While speaking about Becky Lynch, Cena revealed that he, like Becky, was forgotten and was about to be released by the WWE, and a change in character helped him get back on track.

“I was about to be fired. I was in a Becky Lynch-type scenario where I was forgotten and I was about to be let go and I took a chance on myself. I took a chance on redefining my character and it worked and I’ve never stopped. And I wasn’t the corporate headquarters first, second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth choice, but the audience began to make noise."
"And I connected with the audience and the rest is history. And that’s what’s wonderful about WWE. It truly is an enterprise system for any performer to connect with the audience. And once they connect with the audience, it doesn’t matter if they’re male or female," said Cena.

What's next?

We aren't sure when we'll see Cena back in the WWE ring, but Lynch will most likely be on RAW this coming week as she tries to get back her spot in the WrestleMania main event.
