What's the story?

It is with a heavy heart we can confirm that at the age of 82, Pro Wrestling legend Larry 'The Axe' Hennig has unfortunately passed away.

In case you didn't know...

Larry 'The Axe' Hennig was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 18, 1936, and was best-known for his with the American Wrestling Association. During his tenure with the AWA, Hennig won the AWA World Tag Team Titles on four different occasions, once with Duke Hoffman and thrice with the legendary Harley Race.

Hennig, who is also remembered as the father of the late great Curt 'Mr. Perfect' Hennig, also won the NWA Pacific Northwest Tag Team Titles with his son Curt as a father and son tag team.

Billed as 'The Axe' due to his signature move, Hennig is also the grandfather of current WWE wrestler Curtis Axel, who was accompanied to the ring by his grandfather on WWE television during a tag team match at the 2014 Elimination Chamber pay-per-view.

The heart of the matter

This week in overall has certainly been a terrible one for all wrestling fans, as following the passing away of British Wrestling legend Dynamite Kid just two days ago, AWA legend Larry 'The Axe' Hennig has now passed away at the age of 82.

The news of Hennig's death was first broken by journalist Mike Mooneyham, who posted the following on Twitter:

Tributes have also showered in from wrestlers all around the globe and WWE star Curtis Axel also posted a very emotional tribute message to his late, great grandfather.

Larry 'The Axe' Hennig will certainly go down as one of the all-time greatest Professional Wrestlers to grace the square circle and the industry in overall and Hennig's impact on the entire Pro Wrestling business has certainly been a great one.
