What's the story?

The Rock sat down with KISS FM UK for an interview and revealed that he was supposed to be a part of WrestleMania 34. We thank Fightful for the update.

The initial plans were to have him tag with Ronda Rousey and take on Triple H and Stephanie McMahon in Rousey's debut WWE match. Kurt Angle was finally chosen as her tag team partner.

In case you didn't know...

The Rock and Ronda Rousey were part of an interesting segment at WrestleMania 31, where they teamed up to take out 'The Authority'. Fast forward three years later and Ronda Rousey is a full-fledged WWE superstar.

Rousey and Angle did manage to form a formidable team and have perhaps the best match at WrestleMania. However, if The Rock is to be believed, such was never the initial plan.

The heart of the matter

The Rock spoke about interactions with Vince McMahon about possibly teaming up with Rousey:

Matter of fact, Vince McMahon and I were talking about two months ago trying to figure out what I was going to do if I went back to WrestleMania. He pitched me this really great idea that I'd get involved in a tag match with Ronda Rousey who is of course incredible and I'm very proud of her.

Sadly, the idea never materialized because of a scheduling conflict, but The Rock did not rule out a future alliance:

We couldn't make it work this time because I was in Shanghai. But, who knows down the line?

What's next?

The Rock is the biggest movie star in the world. We do not expect him to be a part of WWE until one of the bigger pay-per-views eventually does come around. It's heartening to see that he never rules out the idea of an appearance, though!

Author's take

I was happy with how it all eventually turned out. Angle was a great partner for Rousey and I'm glad he had a WrestleMania match after so long.

I wonder what the plans for Angle would have been had Jason Jordan not been injured before WrestleMania.
