Triple H once walked out FMJ to the boxing ring.

What’s the story?

In a recent interview with ESPN’s First Take, Triple H revealed that the Mayweather vs McGregor ‘Money Fight’ drew inspiration from the WWE.

On that note, Triple H said that from a promotional standpoint, both Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor used several WWE-style promotional tricks by bringing out their respective personalities and drawing the attention of millions around the world to the boxing match.

Additionally, HHH stated that an event like Mayweather vs McGregor was almost impossible to replicate, and despite the outcome being predictable, the overall show was most definitely entertaining.

In case you didn’t know…

Legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. competed against UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor in a boxing match this past August 26th.

Floyd beat the debuting Conor by way of TKO in Round 10 of their fight; however, the fight was without a doubt financially lucrative for all parties involved with FMJ likely to earn upwards of $300 million and McGregor set to pocket more than $100 million after the final revenue estimates come in.

The heart of the matter

Speaking about the Mayweather vs McGregor fight, Triple H pointed out how Floyd time and again credits ‘personality’ for selling fights more than the lure of the actual fight itself. Besides, HHH explained how, much like in the pro-wrestling business, Hulk Hogan eventually transformed his personality into Hollywood Hogan, similarly FMJ went from ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ to ‘Money Mayweather’.

Furthermore, the Game praised Conor McGregor for drawing influence from the WWE and Mayweather in order to create his own persona. Triple H added:

“When you have personalities like that and you put them in a ring with that type of conflict – it’s what we do on a daily basis. But they did it very well. It was a moment in time that I don’t think you can replicate.”

The King of Kings then went on to praise the event for being high on the entertainment quotient.

What’s next?

Conor McGregor plans to pursue a career in both professional MMA and boxing, whereas Floyd Mayweather has retired from the sport of pro-boxing.

On the other hand, the WWE has its own set of big PPVs coming up as No Mercy goes down on September 24th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Author’s take

I’ve got to agree with Triple H here in the sense that a lot of the MayMac beef, trash-talk and rivalry seemed to be fabricated and scripted much like the WWE…well, except for the actual fight.

Nevertheless, the fight was truly legit and dare I say as entertaining as Wrestlemania.
