What’s the story?
Singer Jennifer Hudson voluntarily dropped the restraining order against long-time boyfriend David Otunga and a judge awarded Otunga temporary custody of their child according to Cook County Court documents.
In case you didn’t know...
Hudson was awarded full custody of their child and received an emergency order of protection against Otunga following a court appearance on November 16th.
The reason for the restraining order and custody move was due to an alleged domestic dispute where Hudson said Otunga pushed Hudson out of a master suite during a recording session in Chicago. Hudson also said that Otunga left a gun and holster on their kitchen counter in an attempt to intimidate her, which lead to her calling the police and having them remove Otunga from the family home.
The heart of the matter
The Blast reports that Otunga and Hudson appeared in court on November 27th to drop the restraining order against Otunga and reached a temporary custody agreement which gives him custody of their child due to Hudson shooting “The Voice UK” and “The Voice” in Los Angeles, which will require a lot of travel.
The allegations against Otunga resulted in the former Tag Team Champion not appearing on the pre-show panel for the Survivor Series pay-per-view which TMZ Sports reported was at Otunga’s request.
Otunga was promoted from pre-show coverage to being a SmackDown Live announcer once the brand split returned and was drafted to Monday Night Raw during the Superstar Shakeup, but was replaced by Booker T for all Raw commentary going forward.
What’s next?
Otunga’s reasoning for not appearing at Survivor Series was allegedly due to his desire to focus on the custody battle and denying the abuse allegations.
With Otunga now the primary custodial parent, there’s been no report on whether he’ll be returning to the WWE anytime soon.
Author’s Take
Hudson’s allegations against Otunga led to the Burr Ridge police investigating the domestic battery report, so the issues between Hudson and Otunga may not be done playing out in court.
