It's been two weeks now since Friday Night SmackDown debuted on FOX. After an eventful debut episode filled with star-power, shockers, and massive segments, the second episode for the Blue brand of FOX was also a huge deal. Being the Night One of the WWE Draft, the WWE Universe witnessed both RAW and SmackDown pick Superstars of their choice to join their respective rosters.
The reaction to the first night of the Draft was somewhat mixed as fans were happy with few decisions, not so much with some others. While the Draft will surely freshen up the product, especially with it ending the Wild Card rule, WWE needs to be careful with the picks.
In my opinion, the first night of the Draft wasn't very exciting and WWE needs to step-up their game on the upcoming episode of Monday Night RAW, which would host the second night of the Draft. Did you have the same feelings? Let me know in the comments section below.
Let's analyze and take a look at five things that should not happen on Night Two of the WWE Draft.
#5 The Draft following the same order as in the preliminary draft pools
Before the start of the Draft, WWE announced a list of preliminary draft pools that had the names of Superstars eligible to be drafted on Night One and Two of the Draft. While it makes sense to divide the Superstars into pools to keep the Draft interesting on the second night, there was a major blunder with the list that many fans noticed.
The sequence of Superstars in the draft pool announced for Night One was almost identical to the actual sequence of draft picks on the night. One could check the list and find out who'll be drafted next - which ruined any excitement around the whole thing.
Whether that was a genuine mistake or not, WWE needs to make sure the same does not repeat on RAW. Currently, the list has been updated and arranged in alphabetical order, but many fans already have the access to the original one.
#4 Too many Superstars being left undrafted
The 2019 WWE Draft started with one of the most prominent Superstars on the WWE roster currently - the RAW Women's Champion, Becky Lynch. Lynch became the first woman in history to be drafted as the overall #1 pick as she was drafted to RAW.
Unfortunately, not everyone was as lucky as The Man. While many major Superstars were left waiting until Round 3 and 4, some didn't even get that privilege as they were left undrafted.
While someone like EC3 being left undrafted on Night One wasn't a surprise as WWE doesn't seem to have any plans for him, leaving a Superstar like Cesaro undrafted didn't go well with the fans. The rule of the Draft is that these undrafted Superstars are now "free agents" and can now sign with any brand of their choice.
Whatever be the case, WWE must address the situation of these Superstars at the coming show and also make sure that the same does not repeat on Night T. Having so many undrafted Superstars could become a really big problem - not to mention, might not go well with their fans.
#3 Relegate the 24/7 Championship to a single brand
Not many would have thought about this, but one of the biggest concerns right now is what would happen to the 24/7 Championship once the rosters are separated? With the Wild Card rule coming to an end, the Superstars won't be allowed to appear on the opposite brands now onwards. So, will the title be relegated to a single brand?
It won't be a great idea as making it brand-specific would reduce the number of Superstars competing for it - ultimately leading to the urgency around the belt getting reduced as well. Both R-Truth and Carmella are listed in the draft pool of RAW, and unless they are left undrafted, they would take the 24/7 title with them to one of the two brands.
There are many ways in which the situation can be handled. The 24/7 title can be defended anytime and anywhere. So, it is still possible for the title to appear on both shows with one of the Superstars on one brand pinning the other from the second brand to win the championship.
#2 No major surprises or returns
As mentioned earlier, the first night of the Draft wasn't as exciting as many were expecting it to be. No matter how much "War Room" visuals WWE showed, it was ultimately Stephanie McMahon announcing the draft picks - which was not as interesting as two General Managers or Executives announcing their picks like the original Draft in 2016.
Another major disappointment was the absence of any real surprises or returns on the show. WWE had a great opportunity to have someone like Drew McIntyre return as part of the show and make a huge impact. It would be very disappointing if the same continues this Monday on RAW.
None of the Tag Teams and factions were broken either. The closest that came was the former Women's Tag Champs, but the two were also drafted to the same brand, although separately. One of the biggest names on the pool list of RAW is that of New Day as fans are excited to see whether the trio would stick together or not.
Looking at the lack of excitement on Night One of the Draft, WWE should seriously consider different ways to make the second night interesting with some major surprises and returns.
#1 Keeping Seth Rollins and Brock Lesnar on their respective brands
While it is safe to assume that the RAW and SmackDown Women's and Tag Team Champions would all remain on their respective brands only, the same could not be said about the two World Champs.
But it would be a big mistake to let the WWE Champion, Brock Lesnar, and the Universal Champion, Seth Rollins change brands. There are many reasons for this other than the fact that the Universal Title has a deep red color.
With the reports of FOX wanting a more sports-oriented feel for Friday Night SmackDown, Lesnar completely fits the role of being the World Champion on the show. The entire build-up of his rivalry with Cain Velasquez has been on the Blue brand, which has garnered a lot of mainstream attraction, and the same should be continued.
On the other hand, the Universal Champion hasn't had a great time lately with his Hell in a Cell match ending being criticized by the fans. While The Fiend has been drafted to SmackDown, the way he attacked Rollins this past Friday has left us wondering whether the rivalry is over or not. In my opinion, it is best to keep the two away for now to prevent any further damage to the babyface persona of the BeastSlayer.
