WWE Rumor Mill: Possible Reason For Shield Reunion Revealed

The real reason may have nothing to do with storyline reasons
The real reason may have nothing to do with storyline reasons

What's the story?

Not long ago, Braun Strowman attempted to cash in his Money in the Bank contract on current Universal Champion, Roman Reigns. His efforts were thwarted by the reunion of The Shield, as they stepped out to powerbomb him through a commentary table.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter says that the Shield reunion happened as a way to sell more merchandise. I thank Cageside Seats for the update.

In case you didn't know...

The Shield has been one of WWE's most popular units in recent times. They briefly reunited for a spell last year, but had to cut the run short owing to a real-life injury to Dean Ambrose.

After Ambrose's return, The Shield has picked up right from where they left off. They currently hold two titles, and while every member has his own individual storyline, they are still a unit. They are currently feuding with Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre and Braun Strowman.

The heart of the matter

The Shield is a unit formed of three top guys, each of whom has been the world champion in the past at some point. Therefore, their merchandise numbers are solid and the move was perhaps made to move more stock.

The Shield is absolutely red hot right now. Sure, there may be stock in the belief that the WWE has storyline plans for The Shield as well, but the reunion could have happened due to business reasons like the rumour implies. Roman Reigns is already the highest merchandise seller in WWE and it stands to reason that allied with Ambrose and Rollins, the numbers could be significantly boosted.

What's next?

The Shield met their match in a heel alliance, led by Braun Strowman. Things will only get more interesting in the coming weeks. What do you think is next for The Hounds?
