WWE SmackDown Live Preview: Former Tag Team Champions to reunite, Kevin Owens' last appearance tonight? (September 17, 2019)

After an average Clash of Champions and a more than amazing Monday Night RAW, we are all set for this week’s SmackDown Live. On Sunday, we saw all the SmackDown Champions putting their titles on the line.

Except for the SmackDown Tag Team championship, every other gold on the Blue Brand was successfully defended. Bayley used the oldest trick from the heel handbook to pick up a sneaky win over Charlotte Flair. Kofi Kingston retained his WWE Championship against Randy Orton as the two looked to settle their decade-old rivalry. Shinsuke Nakamura also defended his Intercontinental Championship against The Miz.

But the night didn’t favor New Day members Big E and Xavier Woods who lost their SmackDown Tag Team titles to The Revival.

Despite an average pay-per-view, last night’s RAW kept the WWE Universe buzzing as it was one of the best shows produced in a long time. That has led us into believing that we will see a similarly good show tonight. Thus, without further ado, let’s take a look at what can unfold on this week’s episode of SmackDown Live.

#5 Rowan reveals future of The Bludgeon Brothers

Will we see the Bludgeon Brothers reunite?

WWE Superstar Rowan pushed Roman Reigns beyond the limit during their no DQ match at Clash of Champions 2019. After engaging in a brutal encounter, the ‘Big Dog’ had started to dominate Rowan but that wouldn’t last.

Rowan unexpectedly received assistance from his former Tag Team partner Luke Harper who helped him prevail over Roman Reigns. The commentary team even referred to the act as ‘Bludgeoning’ hinting that the former Tag Team Champions may reunite.

Now that Rowan is scheduled to appear for an interview, it is fair to expect him to use this segment to declare that he and Luke Harper are realigning to take on the SmackDown Tag Team division.

We have seen that Rowan’s run as a singles competitor gets stale quite soon. Harper, on the other hand, is charismatic and together, they are exceptionally good.

Maybe it’s time for these two former members of the Wyatt family to come back together. And who knows, maybe they will find their way into the Firefly Funhouse.

#4 New Day vs Randy Orton and The Revival

This six-man Tag Team match was made official via the official WWE website. This isn’t the first time we will see these six men taking on each other inside the squared circle. Both teams share a lot of history which will play a major role in their upcoming encounter.

On Sunday, Kofi Kingston defeated Randy Orton to retain his WWE Championship at Clash of Champions. But in the week leading up to the pay-per-view, we saw The Viper receiving assistance from The Revival in taking down the current champion.

Speaking of The Revival, Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder defeated Big E and Xavier Woods to become the SmackDown Tag Team champions. Therefore, The New Day have plenty of reasons to make their opponents taste the brutal side of one of the best stables in WWE history.

Having said that, I can’t deny that seeing this match-up week after week has made the booking a little stale. Therefore, this week we must see something new in this brewing rivalry.

Maybe we will see new exciting spots in the match that will force the WWE Universe to stand on their feet and applaud some of the best Superstars on the roster today. Kofi Kingston and Randy Orton can specifically take advantage of this match to make up for their average match at Clash of Champions.

#3 Historic day for Baron Corbin

Baron Corbin may not be your favorite WWE Superstar on the modern-day roster but you can’t deny that he is brilliant at working the crowd. With the amount of heat he receives, Corbin has done a splendid job at getting underneath the skin of every single person inside the arena (barring Corey Graves).

After making his way past all the competitors of the 2019 King of the Ring tournament, Corbin locked horns with Chad Gable in the final match of the esteemed contest that took place on RAW. In the end, Corbin ended Gable’s fairytale run and became the ‘King of the Ring’.

Tonight, we will witness the coronation of the newly crowned king. It is a historic moment in WWE and King Corbin will take the reigns of his kingdom. This is the perfect opportunity for WWE to recreate Corbin’s character.

But that doesn’t mean he should no longer be a heel. Corbin does an excellent job at being a villain and an evil king maybe the next best thing for the WWE Universe.

As Graves has repeatedly said, ‘King Corbin’ has a nice ring to it. It will be interesting to see what Corbin does next for a kingdom that isn’t exactly loving him on the throne.

#2 What’s next for Bayley and Charlotte Flair?

Baron Corbin may be our king but there’s no royalty on the main roster quite like our Queen, Charlotte Flair. She may have lost against Bayley at Clash of Champions but Charlotte is far from out of that conversation.

Bayley, on the other hand, is getting better every week following her much-awaited heel turn. I loved the way she tricked Charlotte and slammed her head onto the exposed turnbuckle to successfully defend her title on Sunday. Yeah, she did run backstage without wasting a second but she did what she had to do to keep her SmackDown Women’s championship safe.

However, that wasn’t the last encounter between these two Superstars. Bayley teamed up with Sasha Banks to take on Women’s Tag Team Champions Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross. Bayley viciously attacked Bliss and Banks made Nikki Cross submit to win the match. But when The Boss wanted to attack her opponent with a steel chair, Lynch walked out to take on her rival and got some assistance from her former best friend Charlotte Flair.

The Queen took out Bayley before sharing the ring with Lynch as the segment ended. With so much going on between all the above-mentioned Superstars, it is impossible to rule out the possibility that the four horsewomen will once again be in action tonight.

When Bayley and Charlotte Flair come face to face tonight, I expect the former to pull off a cheap shot at the Queen. This will give Charlotte a taste of her own medicine and will help establish her as a face without compromising her in-ring character. Also, it may lead to a rematch between the two being scheduled for the next pay-per-view.

#1 ‘Fight Owens Fight’ but on which brand?

Shane McMahon is set to address the firing of Kevin Owens on tonight’s episode of SmackDown Live. And if WWE play their cards right, we may see an unforgettable segment unfold at the State Farm Arena.

The ‘Best In the World’ Shane McMahon is one of the most hated characters on the main roster. Last week, he appointed Kevin Owens as a referee for his semi-final match against Chad Gable on the pretext of forgiving Owens’ $100,000 fine.

KO did his best in the match while Shane O’Mac kept pulling off one dirty trick after another. But none of his shenanigans could keep Gable from fighting for a spot in the final of the King of the Ring tournament.

After losing his match, Shane told KO that he was fired. Soon after that, Owens put up a cryptic tweet hinting that he might be headed to NXT which is going live on the USA Network from this week.

Kevin Owens enjoyed some of the best days of his career on the yellow brand and frankly, I would love to see him be the face of WWE NXT. However, I also hope that he will make an iconic exit from the blue brand.

Tomorrow, when Shane addresses the entire KO segment, the latter can walk out and annihilate his boss one last time before moving on to the third brand of WWE. Props to him if his goodbye present to Shane is a headbutt that the latter will remember for days to come.
