Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, popularly known as ‘PewDiePie’, is a Swedish YouTuber and gamer with an estimated net worth of $40 million and earns an estimated $15-20 million per year as reported by Celebrity Net Worth. Though many have associated PewDiePie with Kjellberg all these years, his initial YouTube account was registered in 2006 under the name PewDie, based on the sound of lasers and someone dying subsequently. But upon forgetting his password for the channel, Kjellberg chose to register his new YouTube account as PewDiePie in 2010 as reported by ESPN. Being one of the fastest-growing channels on YouTube, PewDiePie became the most-subscribed channel in August 2013 and eventually started posting diversified content which included comedy videos, reaction videos, music videos, etc. As he shifted away from pure gaming content, he gradually became involved in a number of controversies for things he would say in his videos. In February 2017, PewDiePie lost his YouTube Red show and his Disney partnership after he received a lot of backlash for using anti-semitic language.
The later part of 2018 and the early part of 2019 saw PewDiePiew’s title of most-subscribed channel come under threat with Indian record label T-Series, inching closer every day, with both channels vying to the be the most most-subscribed YouTube channel. Kjellberg started a fake ‘online beef’ from his side as he released his most viewed video, Bitch Lasagna, a diss-track in which he makes fun of T-Series. But after his channel was overtaken as the most-subscribed YouTube channel, Kjellberg released “Congratulations”, another music video, as a direct response to T-Series becoming the most-subscribed channel.
This phase of his career spawned the “Subscribe to PewDiePie”, which was used desperately by the Bro Army to try and stop T-Series from claiming the number one spot. However, since then, two mass murderers have said explicitly mentioned this catchphrase during their massacres or within their manifesto following which Pewds distanced himself from this viral meme.
Social Blade reports, that the PewDiePie YouTube channel held the title of the most-viewed channel between 2014-2017 and currently ranks as the 26th-most-viewed channel on YouTube with over 28,486,601,157 views. Though he is currently accredited with being the fourth-most subscribed channel on YouTube, he still holds the title of being the most-subscribed YouTube channel owned and operated by an individual.
Kjellberg has won a number of Shorty’s, Streamy, and Teen Choice Awards to his name. Following his peak on YouTube, Forbes named Kjellberg in their 30 Under 30 list for their Gaming and Hollywood & Entertainment for Europe in 2016 and even made two separate cameos on South Park.
