Great American Ball Park’s History/Great American Ball Park Construction and Cost

The construction of the Great American Ball Park started after the Cincinnati Reds felt the need for a new stadium in the early 1990’s. They had played at Riverfront Stadium and Cinergy Field for much of their existence. Moreover, the stadiums were much more suitable for football than baseball. Therefore, Hamilton County in 1996, passed a 0.5% sales tax increase for constructing new stadiums for both the Cincinnati Reds in MLB and the Cincinnati Bengals in NFL. The team also agreed to payment of $2.5 million as rent for the first 10 years and then $1 million every year for the next 25 years. The naming rights for the stadium was bought by Great American Insurance for 30 years for $75 million. Hence, the stadium was named Great American Ball Park. It was opened for the fans on March 31, 2003.


The Great American Ball Park is a retro-modern stadium. It is located near the Ohio river and is notable for “The Spirit of Baseball '', a 50 by 20 foot monument at the stadium for attracting more fans. There are also heroic figures of a batter, a pitcher and catcher sculpted from Indiana limestone. The center right field has two smokestacks. These are used to flash lights, emit streams and display fireworks whenever the Cincinnati Reds win a game. Moreover, these are also symbolic of the old steamboats which were found on the Ohio river in the 19th and 20th centuries. There are two mosaic panels of 160- square feet. The first is The First Nine honoring the Red Stockings, the first incarnation of the team which won their first season with a 57-0 record. The other mosaics are known as The Great Eight and it honors the team that won the World Series in 1975 and 1976.


The Great American Ball Park is notable for having the 6th largest scoreboard of 218 feet in the MLB. They added LED boards in 2009 by spending $4 million and also upgraded the video screens to HD. The stadium has 63 suites for premium fans. Moreover, 47 restrooms, 28 concession stands and 14 elevators can also be found throughout the stadium. There is also the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum beside the west wall of the stadium. It celebrates memorable moments from the team’s history alongside notable players. The concourse between the third base and the home plate is 35 feet and provides an impressive view of the downtown and the skyline of the city. There are also views of the Ohio river and Mt. Adams.


The field surface has been made using Perennial Ryegrass. The left field is 328 feet and the left center field is 379 feet. The right field is 325 feet while the right center field is 370 feet. The center field is 404 feet while the backstop is 55 feet. The construction of Great American Ball Park cost $290 million in 2003, which was equal to $461 million as of 2022. It was constructed by Populous and GBBN Architects.
