Minecraft 1.20, also known as the Trails & Tales update, is introducing two new types of wood for players to utilize. One type is cherry wood, which can be found via cherry trees, but the other comes from bamboo, foregoing traditional tree types entirely. By using standard bamboo found in jungles, players in the Trails & Tales update can craft wood and wooden plank blocks as well as many other blocks.

Overall, bamboo wood and bamboo planks in Minecraft operate largely like other wood types. They can be used to create many of the same blocks as the other wood types, but with a different appearance that makes them stand out. You can also create rafts and a new boat type using bamboo planks.

How the bamboo wood set works in Minecraft 1.20

Traditionally, Minecraft players who need wood for their builds would head out into a forested biome, cut down some trees for log blocks, and use them how they see fit. On the other hand, bamboo works a little differently, although it still operates in a very similar regard to other wood sets seen in the game. The most notable aspect at first glance is that since there are no bamboo "trees", you must craft your logs by combining nine pieces of regular bamboo in a crafting table to create a block of bamboo.

Much like ordinary log blocks in Minecraft, blocks of bamboo can be used as-is for buildings and decorations, and can also be stripped by using an axe on them. The stripped form of the bamboo block is yellow in color, while the standard version is green in appearance. The block of bamboo is the core crafting component that is used to craft the remaining bamboo wood blocks available in the set. Stripped blocks of bamboo can also be combined with chains to make hanging signs in Minecraft.

By placing a block or stripped block of bamboo into a crafting table, you can create bamboo planks. However, you'll only receive two plank blocks instead of the usual four granted by other wood types. These Minecraft planks work much like their tree-based counterparts and can be used to create buttons, doors, fences and gates, pressure plates, signs, slabs, stairs, and trapdoors. Bamboo planks can also be used to create bamboo rafts, including rafts with chests. These plank blocks can also be used to make standard wooden items that can be made with all wood types like chests, wooden tools, and weapons.

In addition to matching most other wood types in Minecraft, bamboo can also be used to create a unique block type known as the bamboo mosaic. This ornately-patterned block makes for a great decorative piece and can be created by combining two bamboo slabs vertically in a crafting table. Bamboo mosaic blocks can also be crafted into stairs and slabs as well, bearing the unique mosaic pattern not seen in standard bamboo set blocks.

Like nearly all wooden blocks in the game, the blocks in the bamboo wood set can be used as fuel in a furnace, and each block will fuel the smelter to smelt 1.5 units of material. Blocks of bamboo can also be placed underneath note blocks, where they will produce a bass sound when the note block is activated.
